  11. Barnsley Council leader calls for clarification over City Region's elected mayor

    Rebecca Kerry

    Journalist, BBC Radio Sheffield

There's confusion over whether the South Yorkshire region must have a directly elected mayor as part of any devolution deal.

Downing Street insists there's no change in policy and that in the deals that have been done to date, a mayor had been a requirement.

But it also goes on to say the government wouldn't force areas to have a mayor if they didn't want one.

The leader of Barnsley Council, Sir Steve Houghton, says we need clarification from the government:

    Jenny Cork

    BBC Sheffield news

    Kelham Island, Sheffield

Local areas in England which do not want a directly-elected mayor will not be forced to have one, Downing Street has said.

The Prime Minister's official spokeswoman said the government would continue to engage with local areas on devolution.

She said that, as under David Cameron, where local authorities don't want to be part of a deal, the government would not force them.

She says the government was open to discussions on any devolution proposals that included strong, accountable governance, including mayors.

    Sheffield

Sheffield City Region signed a deal in October 2015 to have an elected mayor by 2017.

By March 2016, the devolution deal won the support of all nine councils affected.
