Man charged with firearms offence in Sheffield

Police have charged a 21-year-old man with a firearms offence following an incident in Sheffield over the weekend.
William Parr, of Miles Road, High Green, Sheffield, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed article and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.
It's after a call to police on Friday night about a man who was believed to be carrying a weapon in the Worrall Road area. Mr Parr has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 19 September.
Man dies in South Anston collision

A 61-year-old man has died after a crash in the South Anston area of Rotherham yesterday evening.

This was on the A57 Sheffield Road towards Todwick when there was a collision between a Nissan Almera and a white Mercedes HGV, travelling in the opposite direction.
The man died at the scene. Police are asking for witnesses to call 101.

Barnsley Council leader calls for clarification over City Region's elected mayor

There's confusion over whether the South Yorkshire region must have a directly elected mayor as part of any devolution deal.
But it also goes on to say the government wouldn't force areas to have a mayor if they didn't want one.

Man charged with GBH following domestic incident in Sheffield

A 30-year-old man has been charged with assault following a domestic incident on Fairthorn Road, Firth Park on Saturday 20 August, during which a 59-year-old man was seriously injured.
Philip Salkeld, of Fairthorn Road, Sheffield, has been charged with grievous bodily harm.
He has been remanded into custody to appear at Sheffield Magistrate's Court today.
The 59-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Local areas in England which do not want a directly-elected mayor will not be forced to have one, Downing Street has said.
The Prime Minister's official spokeswoman said the government would continue to engage with local areas on devolution.
She said that, as under David Cameron, where local authorities don't want to be part of a deal, the government would not force them.
She says the government was open to discussions on any devolution proposals that included strong, accountable governance, including mayors.

'Exceptional flooding' at White Scar Cave
Overnight flooding has closed a show cave at White Scar Cave in Ingleton, North Yorkshire, with dramatic video taken at the scene earlier today showing water rushing through the visitor entrance and down steps to the nearby road.
Heavy rain is said to have hit the area overnight, with standing water on a number of roads, according to North Yorkshire County Council.
It's estimated 60mm of rain had fallen in the area since midnight, but staff at the caves say they're hopeful the attraction will reopen by Tuesday morning.
John Connaughton, caves manager, has told BBC Radio York that water started to flow out of the cave entrance at about 08:20 and described the incident as an "exceptional flood".

Rotherham MPs deny electoral expenses fraud

Three MPs in South Yorkshire are being investigated by police over alleged electoral expenses fraud.

Man jailed for kidnap and firearm offences in Sheffield

A man is behind bars for kidnapping his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her.
Levi Solomon, aged 52, of Skelton Grove, Woodhouse, Sheffield, was jailed for four years today after admitting kidnap and possession of a firearm at a hearing in May.
Barnsley's Chicago Rock nightclub 'may be demolished' after fire

Barnsley council's revealed the former Chicago Rock nightclub on Wellington Street, which was destroyed by fire last week, may have to be demolished.
A structural engineer's report is being compiled and discussions are being held with the building owner's insurance company.

Several homes have been evacuated on Sturton Road, Burngreave, as firefighters tackle a blaze that's broken out at a Sheffield house.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue were called to the property in Sturton Road, Pitsmoor at around 15:15 this afternoon.
They say 10 fire fighters are in attendance.
The road is closed and people are advised to avoid the area.

By March 2016, the devolution deal won the support of all nine councils affected.
