  2. School makes film about its life and community to attract new head teacher

    Patrick Byrne

    BBC News

A Norfolk primary school has made as film about itself to attract the right candidate to take over as head teacher.

Aldborough's village school, near Aylsham, has 140 pupils but like many smaller rural primaries finds recruitment of head teachers increasingly difficult.

    Still from film

School governors created a promotional film to try to build a picture of the real school. Through YouTube and other social media sites, including Facebook, they've managed to reach thousands of people and have had considerable interest - including one potential candidate who is returning to the UK from Africa.

Dr David Doak, chairman of governors, said: "We wanted the film to encapsulate what's great about Norfolk, as well as what makes our school so special.

"We filmed it over a few days. It was easy to get great footage because Aldborough School is a fantastically positive and happy place - the hard part was editing it down to three minutes!"

  3. Weather: Rain expected on Saturday

  4. Two men charged over attempted robberies at convenience stores

    BBC Radio Norfolk

Two men have been charged in connection with attempted robberies at convenience stores near Norwich on Wednesday. The shops were raided by a man dressed in black, wearing a balaclava and wielding a gun, police said.

    Norwich Crown Court

The first attempted robbery happened at the Spar Shop in Blofield shortly after 19:00 and three hours later Woodside Food and Wine store at Thorpe St Andrew was held up. Money was demanded but nothing was stolen in either incident.

The pair, both from Norwich, have each been charged with two counts of attempted robbery and remanded in custody by magistrates. They're due to appear before Norwich Crown Court on 7 October.

  5. Victims of Gerard Singer 'should feel very proud they have helped bring him to justice'

Police say the sentencing today of former teacher Gerard Singer has brought to a close "one of the longest child sex abuse investigations carried out by Suffolk Police".

    Gerard Stringer

Det Const Karen Crowther added: "I would personally like to thank all those that gave evidence in this matter for their patience and the trust they put in us.

"Some of them were spoken to as far back as 2009 and have waited a long time for this matter to come to court.

"They should feel very proud that they have helped to bring to justice a man who has been a sexual predator and a risk to young boys for more than three decades.”

  6. 'Victim is a word I don't like' says man abused by teacher

    Nic Rigby

    BBC News

The man who spoke to the BBC about the abuse he suffered at the hands of Gerard Singer says he prefers to be thought of as a witness, rather than a victim.

"Victim is a word I don't like because it's a very strong word and a very negative word that you get branded with," he said.

"I was a witness to a series of events."

  7. Man abused by teacher relieved to 'be believed'

    Nic Rigby

    BBC News

One of the men abused as a boy by boarding school teacher Gerard Singer said: "The important thing for me was I've been believed".

The offences were committed at St George's School, at Wicklewood, near Wymondham, between 1978 and 1981, where it was based before it moved to Great Finborough, near Stowmarket.

The man said of the abuse: "It affects you in many, many ways - how you lead your life, how you interact with people - it's always at the back of your mind.

"Because of what happened, to be able to trust other people has been very difficult; almost impossible.

"Because I was at a school, I had trust in a person and that trust was abused and I was abused as part of that.

"Even all these years down the line, you think there's an ulterior motive for just about everything that happens."

  8. Teacher is third to be convicted for offences at boys' boarding school

    Andrew Woodger

    • Alan Brigden (pictured right), who taught maths, was jailed for five years in 2012 after admitting 14 sex crimes against two boys.
    • In 2011 another teacher, Alan Williams, killed himself after being arrested on suspicion of sex assaults at St George's.

    Andrew Woodger

The trial of Gerard Singer heard how he gave boys gifts, including a calculator and sweets, to win their favour.

He has been given a sentence totalling 29 years after being found guilty of 27 offences, including gross indecency and performing oral sex.

One witness told the trial in July that he was given wine, tied face down on a bed and, when he woke up, he had a "pain in his bottom".

    Kevin Burch

    BBC Look East

Former boarding school teacher Gerard Singer, 69, has been given a 29-year sentence for sexually abusing pupils.

Judge Martyn Levett said 21 years must be served in custody, and he'll be expected to serve two-thirds of that before he can be considered for parole.

He'll then face a further eight years, after the 21-year term, on licence.

    Ipswich Crown Court

Singer was found guilty of 27 offences which took place at St George's School between 1978 and 1981 when it was based at Wicklewood, Norfolk, before it moved to Great Finborough, Suffolk.

  12. Sport: 'No more money in kitty for players', Canaries boss says

    Rob Butler

    BBC Radio Norfolk sport

Every spare penny possible has been spent on players and there "isn't any amount left sitting in the kitty", Canaries manager Alex Neil said today.

    Cameron Jerome

Also, reports that striker Cameron Jerome has a more serious injury are "conspiracy theories", he maintained, as he played down other rumours.

"I've had a good chat with Timm Klose and he wants to stay at Norwich City," he said.

And he said an injury to Marouane Chamakh during his West Bromwich Albion trial had ended City's interest, he said.

Neil also said tomorrow's match against Cardiff may be too soon for a debut for new signing striker Nelson Oliveira.

"Overall, we need to make sure the squad is applying themselves to the best of their ability, and if we do that, we'll win games," he added.

  13. Judge tells sex assault teacher 'victims have waited a very long time for justice'

    Kevin Burch

    BBC Look East

Gerard Singer, who's awaiting sentence at Ipswich Crown Court for 27 sexual abuse charges dating back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, has been told by Judge Martyn Levett: "I cannot detect that there is any repentance or atonement in the intervening 35 years.

"The victims have waited a very long time for justice and I can only hope this will give them some form of closure."

  14. Defence disputes claim that sex assault teacher is 'high risk' in future

    Kevin Burch

    BBC Look East

The case of private boarding school teacher Gerard Singer, 69, who's due to be sentenced for 27 sexual abuse charges, has been hearing mitigation from his defence team.

Singer, who had recently been living in France, was found guilty of abusing boys at St George's School between 1978 and 1981, when it was in Norfolk before moving to Suffolk.

Richard Keogh, Singer's barrister, disputed the prosecution claim that his client would remain a high risk to boys, saying he would be an old man on release, given that he was facing a long jail sentence.

The judge at Ipswich Crown Court, Martyn Levett, is due to pass sentence shortly.

Video caption: Investigation into reports that "fake speed traps" had been set up in Potter Heigham

They were put up about three weeks ago in two locations on Market Road in the village. But Trevor Chaplin, who erected one of them in his garden, claims they aren't fake cameras.

They're bat boxes with monitoring equipment. He joked that while they aren't designed to deter anyone driving "like a bat out of hell", if they help cut the speed of traffic he'll be happy!
