  1. Five things we learnt today in North Yorkshire

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

That's all we've got time for today - thanks for being with us. We're back again with our Local Live service from 07:00 tomorrow.

In the meantime, here are five things we learnt in North Yorkshire today:

    1. The stretch of the A64 between York and Malton should be completely turned into a dual carriageway, according to the Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton
    2. Northallerton's medal-winning Olympic rowers are to get a permanent tribute in the town with the Town Hall square to be renamed Olympic Square
    3. Thunder storms across our region last night proved to be electrifying - and the perfect photo opportunity for those with a steady hand and quick reactions
    4. A spate of statue painting has broken out at Studley Royal and Fountains Abbey. Luckily it's turned out to be an attempt at authenticity rather than a case of artistic assassination
    5. And if you want to know just how hot you are compared to others, the BBC has provided this handy link for you to find out your score

I'll leave you today with another cracking BBC Weather Watcher pic taken in Scarborough last night by Barff.

    Scarborough

A few hours later the sky was torn asunder by thunder and lightning, so you could say this was literally the calm before the storm...

  2. Gold award for a treasure house of Yorkshire blooms

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

There's yet more gold success for North Yorkshire, but this time it's been awarded for success in horticulture rather than sporting prowess at the Olympics or Paralympics.

The garden at York's Treasurer's House in the centre of York, behind York Minster, has won a gold in the Yorkshire in Bloom Awards for 2016.

    Treasurer's House

The National Trust-owned garden is looked after by a team of volunteers who have a policy of not using power tools.

Jo Parker, from the trust, says not using power tools "adds to the tranquil feel you get in the garden".

Quote Message: Visitors say they enjoy watching hedges and lawns cut by hand and the silence allows for the buzz of the bees or the ringing of the Minster bells to take priority." from Jo Parker National Trust

  3. Electrify the sky!: BBC Weather Watchers snap up the storms

    BBC Weather

"Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very, frightening": As true now as it was when the song was first written!

Our BBC Weather Watchers were out braving last night's torrential and electrifying storms, snapping some remarkable pics of the brightly lit skies.

    Lightning pics

JD caught the huge lightning strike above Settle (top). The vertical earth strike was snapped by Flying Porker in Skipton and Bradders photographed a horizontal cloud to cloud lightning line above Harrogate.

  4. Northallerton honours its Rio gold and silver medal winners

Northallerton's gold and silver medal-winning Olympic and Paralympic rowers Zoe Lee and Laurence Whiteley are to get a permanent tribute in their home town.

Laurence is the talk of the town after winning gold in the double sculls with his partner Lauren Rowles in Rio.

Zoe was part of the team that won Britain's first ever medal in the Women's Eight in the Olympics, where she took silver.

    Northallerton square

Now Hambleton Council says the square in front of the Town Hall is going to be renamed Olympic Square to reflect the town's sporting glory.

Quote Message: It's been a brilliant achievement by Laurence and by a number of other great athletes over the years, so by renaming the square people visiting us can see the achievements of our great sports people." from Mark Robson Leader of Hambleton Council

  5. Flamingo Land operator could develop Loch Lomond resort

A site on the shores of Scotland's Loch Lomond could be turned into a holiday resort by the operators of Flamingo Land in North Yorkshire.

    Balloch

Flamingo Land Ltd has been named as the preferred developer of a 20-hectare site at West Riverside in Balloch in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

They've drawn up proposals which include lodges, a boutique hotel, "glamping pods" and restaurants. A range of "high-quality, family-based attractions" will also be in the plans.

Flamingo Land's chief executive, Gordon Gibb, says: "We're excited by the prospect of creating a resort in the national park that recognises the importance and sensitivity of the site.

  6. North Yorkshire's weather: A generally warm and humid afternoon

    Abbie Dewhurst

    Weather Presenter, BBC Look North

Thin broken cloud and sunny spells this afternoon.

We might see some coastal fog lingering along the east coast where temperatures may struggle a little.

Elsewhere, it'll feel very warm and humid with a top temperature of about 27C (81F).

  7. Take the 'how hot are you?' test

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

With more high temperatures forecast today as the UK experiences the hottest September temperatures since 1911, here's a handy link which allows you to trot out phrases like "It's as hot as Malaga!"

I just put York in and at the moment it's as hot as Havana and hotter than Istanbul, Tokyo and Paris.

  8. A64 widening 'could devastate Scarborough tourism'

    Jonathan Cowap

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

The Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton, Kevin Hollinrake, is calling for the A64 between York and Malton to be turned into a dual carriageway, claiming it would "reduce accidents and attract new jobs to the area".

But his idea has already sparked fears among some people in Scarborough about the impact Mr Hollinrake's proposal might have on the town.

    Scarborough

Richard Frank, the managing director of Scarborough's Crown Spa Hotel, has told me: "If it's too easy to get to Scarborough, people will just come for day trips, rather than stay for longer."

Quote Message: In Blackpool they 'dualled' all the way through and it devastated the tourism accommodation situation, so it became just a day tripper's place and lost its way." from Richard Frank Managing director, Crown Spa Hotel, Scarborough

The Public Accounts Committee says "it is not convinced" that the first phase of the £56bn rail line - linking London and Birmingham - will open at the end of 2026 as planned.

It also urged the government to clarify the route and costs for the second phase, linking to Manchester, Leeds and near Church Fenton in North Yorkshire, where it will join the existing rail network.

  16. Key to Bake Off success? 'Pudding' the perfect ingredients together...

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

The Bake Off might be leaving the BBC, but I'm going to do my best to hang onto it.

One of the challenges facing contestants in tonight's episode is making the perfect Yorkshire Pudding.

I know it might seem a bit early in the day to be making Yorkshire Puddings, but that's what I've been challenged to do today. I get all the best jobs!

  17. Studley Royal's statues become a whiter shade of pale

Authenticity's the key word at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal this week, as the statues there are repainted to show what they would've looked like nearly 300 years ago.

    Neptune statue being repainted

The statues in the water garden are being painted with a white colour widely used in the 18th century to mimic marble and light stone.

Cleaning and preparatory work's already been carried out and today the first coat of new paint is being applied to the statue of Neptune in the heart of the water garden (pictured).

Painting will continue until Friday this week, with the final results being revealed next Tuesday.

  18. Small rise in unemployment in Yorkshire

There's been a slight increase in unemployment in Yorkshire and the Humber, new figures show.

    Job Centre

The number of people in our region who're out of work went up by 1,000 between May and July to 159,000, according to official figures.

Nationally, unemployment is down by 39,000 to 1.63m.

  19. 'York to Malton A64 should all be dual carriageway' - MP

The stretch of the A64 between York and Malton should be completely turned into a dual carriageway, according to the Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton Kevin Hollinrake.

    A64

There are already plans to spend £250m on improvements to the Hopgrove roundabout near York.

But Mr Hollinrake has told BBC Radio York that will simply "move the traffic congestion to a different part of the A64".

He says the A64 becoming a dual carriageway is "now a priority".

Quote Message: The whole road between York and Malton needs to be turned into a dual carriageway to attract new jobs and businesses to the area and cut the number of accidents." from Kevin Hollinrake Conservative MP for Thirsk and Malton
