  6. Ground control to Major...William

    Kimberley Metcalfe

BBC Local Live, Hull and East Yorkshire

A teddy bear, named Major William Wilberforce, who was launched into space by pupils from Pocklington Prep School has now landed back on earth.

The bear soared 22 miles high beneath a helium weather balloon before plummeting back down once the balloon burst.

He crashed back down in a barley field just 16 miles away from the launch site and after a tussle with a combine harvester was found by a former pupil.

Major William in space and after his plummet back to earth

Major William lost a leg during his adventure and literally had the stuffing knocked out of him, but a visit to a 'teddy doctor' and the delivery of a bespoke crutch patched him up, and he’s now looking forward to his next adventure.

You can watch a gripping 13 minute account of the mission here.
