  2. 'The final will be something special'

Some quotes from Stan Wawrinka, who will play Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final.

"It was tough conditions," says Wawrinka. "I saw the first semi-final and it is really humid, really hot and I knew it would be really tough.

"Kei is a tough player and he played well from the beginning. I had to wait and fight and make him a bit uncomfortable and he started to get tired. That is when I put my game to be aggressive. To be in the final is something crazy.

"I'm really excited. I have watched the final so many times here and to play Novak Djokovic is going to be something special. Hopefully I will be ready and let's see what will happen."

Stan has really lifted his level and he had to today as Nishikori came out firing on all cylinders at the start.

Wawrinka finally found an edge in the second set and had more confidence and energy in the third and fourth sets.

  5. Game, set and match

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-2 Nishikori

Stan Wawrinka is into his first US Open final.

Wawrinka is a game away from the final.

The narrowest of hawkeye decisions goes the way of the Swiss to give him 40-0 before a vicious kick serve seals the game.

The Nishikori supporters in the crowd look like they know the game is up.

    What does he have left?

  9. Another break from Wawrinka

    *Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 4-2 Nishikori

The crowd are right behind the Japanese player, they want a fifth set. Big groans as he puts a drop shot into the net.

Winner number 37 for Wawrinka takes us to deuce.

Big trouble for Nishikori as a bad forehand error hands Wawrinka break point.

    He takes it.

Nishikori has broken serve once this set but he must do it again or he is going home.

  10. Nishikori breaks back!

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 3-2 Nishikori*

A shocker of a service game from Wawrinka. A double fault takes us to 0-40 and three break points for Nishikori.

Nishikori misses a backhand down the line, 15-40.

    Big serve from Wawrinka, 30-40.

He's done it. I'm sorry I doubted you Kei. A brilliant rally ends with a Wawrinka passing shot landing just wide.

Do not go to sleep. This one isn't over yet.

Well said David. Nishikori looks like the deflated balloon, a week on after the party.

He's stopped the rot though. A comfortable hold of serve and Nishikori is still fighting.

Kei Nishikori looks like a popped balloon at the moment. He doesn't inspire great confidence that a comeback is coming.

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 3-0 Nishikori*

Stan Wawrinka saved a match point against Britain's Dan Evans in round three but now he's just three games from his first US Open final.

Two double faults from Stan in that game but Nishikori still can't make him pay, his 39th unforced error of the match hands Wawrinka the game.

Stan Wawrinka is really hitting a hot streak now. He is wrestling the momentum of this match away from his opponent.

  16. Wawrinka breaks in fourth set

    *Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 2-0 Nishikori

This is brutal, brutal hitting from Wawrinka now.

He can't miss, every ball with pace and depth.

A jaded looking Nishikori can't handle it and there is the break to love.

This has been a great match but we may be heading towards a swift conclusion.

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 1-0 Nishikori*

It was all Wawrinka in that game.

Another thumping winner is followed by a delightful drop shot.

He has got it all and Nishikori has it all to do.

    Wawrinka 4-6 7-5 6-4 0-0 Nishikori

    That was a topsy-turvy set.

Wawrinka seemed to have it in the bag before Nishikori came charging back, only to see it snatched away again.

It must be a tough one for Nishikori to take but he's been in this situation before, just two days ago in fact.

A great response by Stan Wawrinka. He really got aggressive and got rewarded for that. The energy he took from the second set to the third has really benefited him.
