  3. Zara Larsson on saying 'no' to record label execs

    NME

    Zara Larsson

Zara Larsson has revealed she initially found it "scary" to stand up to people in the music industry - especially older, mainly male record label executives.

The 18-year-old, who had her first number one in her native Sweden as a teenager, is this week's NME cover star.

"I was 15 when I started, and they're all basically men and middle-aged and know what they're doing, so when I was 15 and I was saying 'No' that was scary," she told the magazine.

"But I've had time to develop my self-esteem and the ability to say no, because that's the most important thing that you can do."

The singer also talked about the inspirations for hits like Lush Life and new single Ain't My Fault (which she performed in the Radio 1 Live Lounge earlier this week).

"Mostly I just write about feelings that people can relate to. Because, yeah, I don’t know who I am, and this is not my sound for ever… I'm a human, so hopefully I will always develop."Watch her cover Drake and Rihanna hit Too Good in the Live Lounge below...

  4. Bring Me The Horizon cancel tour over illness

    Bring Me the Horizon

Bring Me The Horizon have had to cancel the rest of their Australian tour after frontman Oli Sykes fell ill.The British rockers have cancelled two dates in Melbourne tonight and tomorrow night and a show in Auckland, New Zealand on 25 September, after recently scrapping a show in Adelaide.

Sykes has been diagnosed with acute laryngitis and is under doctors orders to rest, according to a statement from Live Nation.

"Medical advice is that he needs immediate rest and cannot perform for the remainder of the tour.

"Bring Me The Horizon are fully committed to return to Australia in early 2017 to complete these shows in Melbourne and Adelaide.

"Details will be released shortly with regard to when and how fans will be able to see the band perform."

Their support band Architects tweeted they would organise an Australian tour of their own to make up for the cancelled shows.

Oli posted a long apology to fans earlier this week after scrapping the show in Adelaide, saying: "I'm so sorry to let you all down, but believe me when I say no one is more gutted than me.

He added: "Right now the shows are one of the main things helping me get through a personally difficult period of my life, and being told that I'm not in any condition to perform, and having to go back and sit alone in a hotel room until this infection subsides, well, is the last thing I wanna be doing.

"Hopefully we can make it back up to you in the not too distant future."

  5. Bon Jovi: new album came 'out of great pain'

    Kev Geoghegan

    Arts and entertainment reporter

    Jon Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi unveiled some new songs from their latest album at an event in London this afternoon.

This House is Not For Sale is the band's first record since guitarist Richie Sambora left the band in 2013.

It also arrives exactly 30 years after their debut, Slippery When Wet.

The new album, or at least the five songs we got to hear, marks a return to the band's mix of radio friendly hard rockers and acoustic led ballads, and while singer Jon Bon Jovi's older sounding vocals still wrap themselves around the rockier numbers, it's in the slower moments on songs like Scars on this Guitar where his heartfelt rasps work best.

Speaking at the album playback, Jon Bon Jovi said:

"It's a record about our integrity. The last tour was difficult for it, but out of great pain comes great songs. But I don't want to go through this much pain again.

"It's about saying this heart, this house is not for sale."

The band are due to play the album in its entirety at a gig at London's palladium on 10 October.

"We wanted to do a show on Broadway and we decided to take it somewhere and that happened to be London.

"It's a representation of who we are, we've never done it before."

We'll have more from Jon on Music News LIVE soon.

  6. Robert Burns: unplugged

    Robert Burns

The songs of Scotland's bard Robert Burns have been stripped back to how they originally sounded by academics at Glasgow University.

Out go the fiddles, guitars and accordions, replaced by harpsichords, cellos and violas.

To be honest, it sounds pretty niche and even Prof Kirsteen McCue from the university's centre for Burns studies said the recordings "would not be to everyone's taste".

  8. Bono calls Donald Trump America's 'worst idea'

Never one to sit on the fence when there is an issue to be argued, Bono has shared his thoughts on the US election, calling America "the best idea the world ever came up with".

But, the U2 frontman added, "Donald Trump is potentially the worst idea that ever happened to America."

In an interview with Charlie Rose on the PBS network, he urged Americans not to let Trump turn the country "into a casino"...

  9. Q Awards to become open to the public

    Foals
Image caption: Foals on the red carpet at the 2013 Q Awards, where they won best live act

It's long had a reputation as a boozy afternoon where bands like to enjoy a cheeky beverage or two, but there are big changes to the Q Awards this year - and you could be there.

For the first time in the ceremony's 26-year history, the public will be able to buy tickets thanks to a move to London's Roundhouse for a big evening do featuring a live headline set from an act being announced soon.

The public vote has also just opened on the Q Magazine website for these seven categories...

    • Best breakthrough act• Best track• Best video • Best album • Best live act • Best solo artist      • Best act in the world today

"This year, in a venue that’s bigger and better, we’re delighted to be able to finally invite the only people that truly matter: those that buy the records, that buy the tickets, and that buy our magazine," said editor-in-chief Phil Alexander.

"It’s been a long time coming, but the fact that it’s also Q Magazine’s 30th birthday gives us an even greater reason to celebrate.”

Tickets for the ceremony on 2 November, hosted by Absolute Radio’s Christian O’Connell, are on sale now.

  10. Ringo Starr shares new track promoting peace and hugs

    Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr has shared a new song Now the Time Has Come, which was recorded in partnership with the United Nations especially for the UN's International Day of Peace on Wednesday.

“Making this record was incredibly personal for me,” said the former Beatle.

“Against the backdrop of war or social unrest, I always turned to music as a refuge. I hope this record can offer people solace and inspire them to do all they can to bring peace to their communities.”

Posting a video recorded in the studio on his Facebook page, Starr said it was co-written with producer Bruce Sugar, with verses sung by Richard Page, Colin Hay and Billy Valentine and backing vocals from "social media superstars" Christian Collins, Maddi Jane, Casey McPherson, James Maslow and Wesley Stromberg.

The song was part of the social-media #HugForPeace campaign to promote non-violence through hugging.

“I worked on this record with Peace & Love,” said Starr. “It was a joy to be part of this project.”

  11. Slaves debut new Mike D collaboration

    Slaves

Slaves have shared a new album track Consume or Be Consumed, featuring Beastie Boys star Mike D

The track revolves around a huge bassline, a guest verse from Mike D and quite a lot of swearing, so sadly we can't share it here.

The new video - which you can watch on YouTube if you don't mind that kind of filthy language - sees duo Laurie and Isaac indulge in a hot dog eating contest which doesn't end well.

Their second album Take Control is due on 30 September and the band are touring the UK in November.

Mike D, who produced the whole album, “became like another member of our band", according to Laurie.

"We can safely call him our friend, which is just surreal!”

  12. Shawn Mendes hates cars. And guitars. And drumkits.

Shawn Mendes' insurance could go through the roof if the underwriters get a peek at his new music video.

The new promo for power ballad Mercy sees the teenage pop star struggling to escape a sinking car and smashing up all manner of instruments.

The piano-driven track is his latest single from his forthcoming second album Illuminate due out on Friday.

The track follows his UK number one single Treat You Better.

Shawn is also due to play Radio 1's Teen Awards next month.

  13. Chase & Status on 'cool' new vocalist Tom Grennan

Dance producers Chase and Status have a knack for finding the right singers to work with and their back catalogue includes collaborations with the likes of Plan B, Cee Lo Green, Rihanna, Example and Tinie Tempah.

Now you can add Tom Grennan to the list. The young singer-songwriter has provided the lyrics to their latest banger All Goes Wrong, which was Annie Mac's Hottest Record on Tuesday night.

"He's great," said Saul from the band. "He's very young, I think he might have just turned 20. The first time he was in the studio was with us when we recorded this a few months ago."

"We got a really rough demo of this kid singing," continues bandmate Will.

"It wasn't really a finished song and we said, 'Hang on'. Something about his voice didn't sound like anything else and he came into Metropolis in London, never been in a proper studio before - and he sat down and got out his guitar.

    "We realised, this kid's cool."

  14. Jack Garratt shares personal letter from Potus

    Jack Garratt

We hope that Jack Garratt has got some wall space in his house because this one must take pride of place between any awkward family photos.

He has tweeted a letter that he was sent by Barack Obama after he sent the US President a copy of his album, expressing his admiration for the politician.

President Obama thanked Jack for his "thoughtful gesture"...

  15. Sia is writing new tunes for Rooney Mara pop star drama

    Sia

The My Little Pony movie is not the only Hollywood project getting a touch of Sia magic - she's also been signed up to write new songs for a pop star drama called Vox Lux, starring Rooney Mara (below).

The film will follow the rise of a singer called Celeste, "from the ashes of a major national tragedy" (thought to be 9/11) to "pop superstardom".

It will span the 15 years between 1999 and the present day and will apparently track the cultural evolutions during that time through the eyes of a pop star.

Directed by Brady Corbet (The Childhood of a Leader), it's due to start filming in February next year.

  16. Iron Maiden to go paperless on tour

    Iron Maiden

This doesn't mean Iron Maiden will be using only hotel toilets with bidets from now on, but it does mean the metal veterans, whose first UK arena tour in six years will be announced on Friday, will implement paperless ticketing.

That means the original cardholder will be required to present their debit or credit card and some photo ID at the gig.

The band say they are working with promoters Live Nation and Ticketmaster to set conditions to ensure tickets are not for resale and that secondary ticketing sites are prevented from listing their shows.

A four ticket per person limit will also be set. Maiden manager Rod Smallwood said:

“We do not want our fans being ripped off either by counterfeit tickets or through costly mark-ups on so called secondary ticketing websites. These problems now affect the UK more than any other country outside of the USA."

He added that paperless ticketing "proved highly successful in reducing piracy at our previous London shows in 2013 and on our North American tours since 2010."

Last month, we revealed The Weeknd and Daft Punk had been in the studio together and today we can hear the fruits of their labour, on The Weeknd's new song Starboy - now on Spotify and iTunes.

The R&B star has shared the artwork for his new album, also called Starboy, following speculation yesterday that something was afoot after he'd deleted all his previous Instagram posts. Now we see why...

    View more on twitter

The follow up to The Weeknd's successful 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness will be released on 25 November, with the iTunes preorder revealing there will be 18 tracks including one called False Alarm.

You can listen to snippets of Starboy on sites including Rolling Stone and Pitchfork - but please beware of the colourful language that version of the track contains.

The other big news is of course that the Canadian star - real name Abel Tesfaye - has ditched his signature look and had a haircut.

  18. Hello
