  2. Green Day forced to put gigs on hold due to illness

    Green Day

Green Day have been forced to postpone and cancel some of their US and Canada live dates because of "illness affecting several members of the band and its crew".

They were supposed to hit the road this week but confirmed in a statement on their Facebook page that shows in St Louis, Chicago and Detroit have been postponed while their Toronto date has been scrapped altogether.

"We’re so sad to announce we have to postpone three shows and cancel Toronto," said the statement.

"Many of us have been battling this infection for days on end to be ready, and it just got the best of us."

Their new album Revolution Radio is due out on 7 October.

The rest of the tour, starting on 26 September in Columbus, is still due to go ahead.

  3. Radio 1 hopes to be 'Netflix of music radio'

Radio 1's Big Weekend in Exeter

BBC Radio 1 is aiming to become the “Netflix of music radio” according to its boss, starting with the launch of "phone first" programmes, which will be available on demand.

Controller Ben Cooper said radio needs to look to successful US streaming sites like Netflix by making content available when listeners want it.

"I believe going forward Radio 1 should have curated on-demand programming on a par with live on-air programming," he told The Guardian.

"That is a huge step-change in terms of a radio station’s thinking and attitude," he said.

The scheme will launch with 25 hours of programming in the autumn and expand next year, and is likely to feature Radio 1’s top 10 most played tracks of the week, New Music Friday and the biggest specialist songs, which will be online first.

"Spotify and Apple are trying to take our crown of being the place to discover new music,” added Cooper. “I have to keep one step ahead of the game."

  5. Emeli Sande sampled family songs from Zambia on new album

    Emeli Sande

Emeli Sande says a trip to Zambia to meet her dad's family had "a major impact" on her new album, calling it "a turning point".

The singer, who grew up in Aberdeenshire, told Radio 4's Front Row programme she sampled some of the Zambian songs she heard when she visited her grandmother's remote village...

Quote Message: They’d light the fire and everyone would sing. Me singing wasn’t really that impressive at all, because everyone could do it. Everyone naturally had that musical ear. I felt a real big part of me was filled. Something I felt had been missing growing up, you know, feeling very different, not connected. Suddenly this, it was full. And I felt like a complete person.
Quote Message: Actually we sampled [them], we took a lot of voice memos when we were there and they’re sampled on the album. There’s one track featuring my dad and my cousins, called Tenderly. And there’s a prayer for my Auntie. I feel like that was such a big spiritual turning point for me.

The full interview will be on Front Row from 19:00 tonight. You can also now watch the singer's performances from the Radio 1 Live Lounge on Friday, where she covered FourFiveSeconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney, performed her classic Next to Me as a bonus track and also debuted new single Hurts...

  7. Ian Brown escapes driving ban, so he can shop for his elderly parents

    Ian Brown

Stone Roses singer Ian Brown has been spared a driving ban after he was caught doing 37mph in a 30mph zone.

The singer, 53, claimed he needs his car - to do shopping errands for his elderly parents.

He pleaded guilty to travelling over the limit, reported the Manchester Evening News, but argued a ban would be an "inconvenience" as it might hinder him from getting groceries for his mum and dad George, 81, and Jean, 79.

He also argued he had to drive "remote" locations to rehearse with the other Roses.

  9. Is Calvin Harris done with EDM..?

    BBC Radio 1

...well that's certainly the impression the Scottish superstar DJ gave Annie Mac when he co-hosted her Radio 1 Dance Show on Friday night.

Discussing his new single My Way (also out on Friday), sung by Calvin himself, he agreed his last few tracks have been less "full on".

"I guess it wouldn't fall in the American EDM bracket any more," he said of his music.

When asked if it was "a considered decision", he replied "yeah, of course".

Calvin added: "But also, what I want to listen to as well. And I think what I'm good at is the more musical side of things anyway... It's kind of more enjoyable to produce. You get nuances you wouldn't get in the big sounding tracks."

According to People, in a since-deleted Facebook video, he tearfully recounted the pretty mean things that people had said about him and the performance, calling it "public shaming".

"We just wanted to tell everybody that, like, it's been really painful. We put ourselves out there and we did the best that we could. And, like, I've never had such mean things said about me. Like constantly."All we can say is that we tried really hard. Because we love our fans and we just wanted to give them the best show that we could. But we don't deserve... these things that are said about us are awful."

While we don't condone any kind of bullying, the fact that it was a pretty awful performance remains...

  11. MistaJam to cover Annie Mac's show on Radio 1

    MistaJam

MistaJam is to take over Annie Mac’s 19:00-21:00 weekday new music show on Radio 1 while she is on maternity leave in January.

He currently presents 1Xtra’s weekday evening show, a slot which will be backfilled by DJ Target.

Danny Howard has been announced as cover for Annie’s Friday night 7-10pm Radio 1 dance show.

MistaJam said: "While Annie's off bringing new life into the world, I'm really excited to be able to share my passion for exciting new music regardless of genre with the Radio 1 audience."

  12. Elton John kicks off the Apple Music Festival with his pals

    Elton John

After wowing Hyde Park for Radio 2 last Sunday, Elton John opened this year's Apple Music Festival at London's Roundhouse last night, where he was joined on stage by some of his newest pals including Christine and the Queens.

After kicking off with The Bitch is Back, the singer promised fans "a night of surprises" with some of his favourite new artists - which, in a suitable display of synchronicity, Elton said he had discovered in the course of presenting his show on Apple's Beats 1 radio station.

Each act joined Elton for one of their own songs and one of his classics - from Devon singer Rosie Lowe's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to LA-based singer Gallant's incredible high notes (which got whoops from the crowd) on his track Weight in Gold and guitar-wielding Parker Millsap standing in for George Michael on Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.

The audience seemed almost as excited about the arrival of Christine and the Queens as Elton himself, with the pair performing her huge track Tilted flanked by her team of dancers and a touching rendition of Tiny Dancer.

As with any Elton gig, other highlights included the classics - Your Song, Rocket Man, Crocodile Rock and a finale of Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, when the evening's special guests returned to the stage armed with tambourines.

  13. Miley Cyrus covers Bob Dylan and pokes fun at Jimmy Fallon

A modestly attired Miley Cyrus used her appearance on The Tonight Show to poke fun at host Jimmy Fallon who was criticised last week for giving Republican candidate Donald Trump an easy ride on his chat show.

During her cover version of Bob Dylan's Baby, I'm in the Mood, she told him: "Don't dare touch my hair," a reference to Fallon ruffling Trump's barnet.

  15. Kanye West joins Instagram with an unusual image

Kanye West may consider himself at the forefront of cutting edge technology yet, despite being a prolific tweeter, he has only just joined social media picture and video site Instagram.

And though he is not following anyone (how very Kanye), he has already amassed 824,000 followers.

And he joined with a typically left field image...

It appears to be a 'Johnny Cab' from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total Recall.

What could Kanye be trying to say? Is he trying to provoke a debate about free will versus predestined mental programming? Is he a fan of violent 1980s sci-fi? Or is this a secret signal to Uber that he needs a ride?

    Who knows...

  16. The night the clubs fell silent (for a minute)

    Fabric nightclubs

London clubland put on a united front at the weekend, with many venues cutting the music to hold a minute's silence in protest against club closures in the capital.

Fabric, one of the biggest venues in the country, was closed earlier this month after its licence was revoked following the drug-related deaths of two clubbers.

Koko, Bedroom Bar and Dalston Superstore were among the bars and clubs to take part on Saturday night.

Organisers say the silent protests were "to show what our world will look like if we continue to lose our cultural spaces".

Gudrun Getz from Passing Clouds, another venue that closed recently in East London, said she thinks it's time for a change in the law to protect clubs.

"If we can get some legislation in place to protect our culture and value, the thing that we as artists and musicians bring to this place, then we will be making a move forward," she told Newsbeat, whose reporter was at the protest.

Meanwhile online music broadcaster Boiler Room has announced it's hosting a special event live from Fabric tomorrow night (20 September).

DJs Goldie and Artwork, MP Emily Thornberry and Mirik Milan - the 'Night Mayor of Amsterdam' are among those who'll join the founders of Fabric for "an important chat on the future of UK nightlife".
