A man has made it into the record books for the fastest monowheel motorcycle ride after reaching a top speed of 68mph at Elvington Airfield near York.

Kevin Scott, from Lincoln, and the UK Monowheel Team broke the previous record of 57mph set by Kerry McClean in the US in 2001.

The record, included in the 2017 Guinness World Records book, was set in 2015.

Mr Scott said recording a new fastest speed was "absolutely fantastic".

If you're a fan of tractors then the place to be over the next few days is Crockey Hill, just south of York.

That's because it's the venue for the British National Ploughing Championships today and tomorrow. Then over the weekend it hosts the World Ploughing Championships.

While there'll also be plenty of shire horses on display because the Championships feature different ways of ploughing, my focus today has been on the tractors:

One of the longest established names in York business could be about to disappear.

Building firm William Anelay Ltd has made 126 employees redundant as administrators were called in today following the failure of moves to rescue the business.

Heritage Open Days are England's biggest festival of history and culture involving over 40,000 volunteers.

A total of £10m is being made available to help boost the bio-economy in North Yorkshire. 

It's an area of business which provides a renewable alternative to fossil fuels like coal and oil, one example being turning farm waste into fuel.

Now, the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership says it wants to hear about projects in which it can invest.

Local Enterprise Partnership chairman Barry Dodd says: "Our area has the foundations to lead the world in this sector, and we're looking forward to receiving some exciting and highly commercial proposals for this fund."

Did you know that North Yorkshire's getting its first international airport?

Last night the former RAF airbase at Church Fenton, near Tadcaster - now known as Leeds East Airport - was granted a licence. 

It means that from next May, people will be able to use it to fly to places like Malaga, Portugal and the French Riviera. 

After a triumphant opening ceremony last night, the Paralympics in Rio are under way, with injured ex-serviceman Mikey Hall, from Richmond, hoping to bag an archery medal.

Mikey, 41, served in the 1st The Queen’s Dragoons Guards until 2000, when he was left paralysed from the chest down after an accident during a training exercise.

He joined the Help for Heroes Sports Recovery Programme and got involved with several sports before realising he had a real talent for archery.

He was soon talent-spotted and competed at Prince Harry's inaugural Invictus Games back in 2014. Now, he's hoping for a medal at the Paralympics.

He takes part in the Men's Individual Compound Open on Saturday night and will also take part in the Mixed Team Compound Open competition.

It may be a village with a population of only about 1,400, but the village of Church Fenton is making headlines for all sorts of reasons today.

Not only has its airport been given a licence for international charter flights, but it's also home to TV and film production studios and it's now been confirmed another season of the TV show Victoria is to be shot there.

Actors and crews will be back at the Church Fenton Studios in January 2017 after spending seven months there recently using the studios to recreate Buckingham Palace for the hit ITV series.

On the day a much-anticipated report is published into the December 2016 floods which hit parts of the north of England, a Yorkshire MP says flood defence action is needed immediately.

North Yorkshire was was one of the worst-hit areas, with the Boxing Day flooding having a devastating effect in places such as York and Tadcaster.

Today's report says a total of £12.5m is being spent on new temporary flood defences in the north of England, with £2.5bn being spent by 2021 to protect families, homes and businesses.

But Wakefield Labour MP Mary Creagh says urgent action is still needed to counter the threat:

Millions of pounds are being spent on new temporary flood defences in the north of England, after the publication of the National Flood Resilience Review.

December's floods inflicted misery on parts of Yorkshire and Cumbria where, in places such as York, flood defences failed.

Thousands of people were forced from their homes over the Christmas period, with some residents still not been able to return. 

According to the report:

• £12.5m will be spent on temporary defences such as barriers and high-volume water pumps
• By next winter, the Environment Agency will have four times more temporary barriers than last year
• Utilities are committed to increase protection of key local infrastructure such as phone networks and water treatment work
• A new stress test will be carried out examining the flood risk from rivers and seas around England
• Met Office forecasts of extreme rainfall scenarios will be linked with Environment Agency modelling for the first time to assess flood risk

You might not know it but there's such a thing as competitive ploughing - and it comes to York today. 

The two-day British National Ploughing Championships take place at Crockey Hill, just south of Fulford - followed by the World Ploughing Contest at the weekend. 

It's the first time the world event has been held in the UK since 2000, with competitors and judges jetting in from as far afield as the USA, Kenya, and Australia.

A long-awaited report into how the country can be better protected from future flooding is due out later.

The National Flood Resilience Review was set up after flooding damaged thousands of homes and businesses across parts of the UK - including in North Yorkshire - in December last year.

The review has focused on several key areas, assessing just how well towns, cities and villages stand up to severe flooding and looking at how local infrastructure such as roads, electricity substations and bridges cope.

It also examines how much money is spent, what it's spent on and where it should be concentrated.

Two drivers have been seriously hurt in a collision near Hunmanby.

The incident happened at about 06:40 on Wednesday morning on Bridlington Road and involved a black Vauxhall Astra and a green Ford Focus C-Max.

The driver of the Astra, a 41-year-old local man, was taken to Scarborough District Hospital with injuries to his stomach.

The driver of the Ford, a 32-year-old man, also from the area, had to be extracted from his car by firefighters. He was treated at the scene before also being taken to Scarborough Hospital.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact police.
