Watch: Rescuers trained on new faster lifeboat for Scarborough
Mike Kemp
Reporter, BBC Radio York
Lifeboat crews in Scarborough are being trained today on a new lifeboat in the South Bay.
They're getting their hands on a new Shannon class lifeboat, along with its new launch and recovery system - which is what you can see the boat sitting on in the clip below.
The £2m boat was funded by donations from the FW Plaxton Charitable Trust, set up after the death of Frederic "Eric" Plaxton, the founder of Scarborough coach building firm Plaxton Ltd, to ensure proceeds of his estate were used to benefit Scarborough people.
The Shannon class lifeboat is the first modern RNLI all-weather lifeboat to be powered by water jets not propellers. It's capable of 25 knots - 50% faster than the lifeboats it replaces.
The boat is due to become operational in November after the opening of Scarborough's new lifeboat station which was rebuilt to accommodate the larger craft.
