  2. Ryan Tedder explains how he shares out his songs

    BBC Radio 1

    View more on twitter

Prolific songwriter Ryan Tedder has been telling Annie Mac how he decides which tracks he keeps and which he gives out.

He and his band OneRepublic played Radio 1's Live Lounge earlier, performing Kids, Counting Stars and a cover of Adele's Send My Love (To Your New Lover).

Tedder has written tracks for and with so many artists including Beyonce, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, One Direction and Kelly Clarkson.

Chatting to Annie he revealed he had a very successful writing session with Ed Sheeran a few weeks ago and they've been trying to decide what to do with all the tracks.

But he said his usual rule was that whoever booked the studio gets to chose whether they want the song created in that session. Listen to the chat below...

  5. Moulin Rouge heads to the stage

    Moulin Rouge The Musical sign

Baz Luhrmann's musical film Moulin Rouge! is being adapted for the stage.

The 2001 film starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman was nominated for eight Oscars and won two. It earned more than $179m (£134m) worldwide.

It's being created by Global Creatures, the same company that recently turned Luhrmann's film Strictly Ballroom into a stage musical.

Development is under way but details of where and when it will be staged have yet to be announced.

Luhrmann said he was happy the film was being developed for the stage by Alex Timbers and John Logan.

Quote Message: I first encountered Alex Timbers through the remarkable and inventive production of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and the brilliance of Here Lies Love. I immediately recognised the young director’s creative spirit and felt we shared similar sensibilities and instincts. So I’m tremendously happy to celebrate that Moulin Rouge! will be under his direction and that the book will be the creation of the gifted Tony Award-winning playwright John Logan whose writing I also admire deeply. It’s immensely gratifying to know that a new wave of artists will be leading Moulin Rouge! into its rightful theatrical realm.
  6. Sampha releases new track Blood on Me

He was touted as one to watch by the BBC's Sound of 2014, but British R&B and electronic artist Sampha has been taking his time and giving himself time to grow before releasing that debut album.

However he's just shared a second new track Blood on Me from his upcoming album Process which, like Timmy's Prayer released in May, hints it may well have been worth the wait.

Sampha's not exactly been slacking though, having notched up songwriting credits on Frank Ocean's surprise visual album Endless, Drake's Too Much, Kanye West's Saint Pablo and tracks with FKA twigs, Jessie Ware and SBTRKT.

You can download or stream Blood on Me now on a range of services or listen below...

  7. Freddie Mercury's family home awarded blue plaque

    Freddie Mercury / Blue plaque

The childhood home of Freddie Mercury has just been awarded a prestigious blue plaque from English Heritage.

Queen guitarist Brian May and Freddie's sister Kashmira Cooke unveiled the plaque at the terraced house in Feltham, West London which was the singer's first home in England.

His parents bought the house in 1964 after the family left Zanzibar for the UK and Freddie was still living there when he first met his future Queen band mates, Brian May and Roger Taylor.

Freddie’s sister Kashmira told the BBC she and her mum are very proud of the honour...

Quote Message: Secretly [Freddie] would be very proud and pleased that he was being honoured in this prestigious manner. He was always sketching for his college art work and sometimes asked me to model for him.... listening to music, particularly Jimi Hendrix. He loved watching Tom & Jerry cartoons... [He] spent hours in the bathroom grooming his hair. At the time I wasn't best pleased as there was only one bathroom. I remember he always used to tap his fingers and be humming, as if thinking of his next best song.

Brian May also remembered his times hanging out at the house with Freddie when he was younger...

Quote Message: It is a pleasant duty to help install this little reminder on Freddie’s parents’ house in Feltham. It was here that I first visited Freddie soon after we had met through a mutual friend. We spent most of the day appreciating and analysing in intimate detail the way that Jimi Hendrix had put his recordings together in the studio - listening to Hendrix on vinyl played on Freddie's Dansette record player... Feltham was the childhood neighbourhood for both of us but we never knew it until we met in the cause of music.
    Freddie Mercury house

Freddie, who died in November 1991, would have turned 70 on 5 September and to mark the occasion The Queen Extravaganza are performing the album A Night At the Opera live at a special Birthday Party in Montreux this Sunday, 4 September. The whole thing will be streamed live on Queen's YouTube channel from 20:25 BST.

  8. Bastille share their new single with Annie Mac

    BBC Radio 1

Bastille gave Annie Mac the first spin of their new track Send Them Off! on Radio 1 last night, where it debuted as the evening's Hottest Record

It's the second track off their forthcoming album Wild World, due out next Friday 9 September, and Dan told Annie on the phone from Amsterdam that it was one of his favourites.

"I guess it was me sort of scratching the old school Kanye itch. We wanted to make a big bombastic, swaggering hip-hop track and then have obviously my vocals come in and it suddenly becoming all depressing and Bastilley."

He added: "A lot of this record is about just trying to undermine people's expectations of us."

Listen to the track, complete with horn samples they recorded themselves, and the full interview below...

No doubt the band will share more details of Wild World when they join Annie on her Radio 1 show tonight from 19:00 to share their party playlist.

  10. Nosy around Justin Bieber's home

We brought you his music earlier (scroll down for more) but how about a nosy around Justin Bieber's actual house?

He took Clara Amfo on a tour of his epic LA pad and there are many fascinating sights.

A giant alligator, a massive inflatable slide and your own boat and jetty are what every young popstar clearly needs...

  11. Jack Savoretti debuts new music

    BBC Radio 2

Jack Savoretti called into Sara Cox on Radio 2 earlier to introduce the first play of his single When We Were Lovers.

Jack is playing a gig in his hometown of Portofino in Italy tonight.

He told Sara he couldn't believe he had been asked to play in the town square, where he used to get told off for playing football as a kid - listen to the interview below...

  12. Rita Ora to sing for the Pope

Rita Ora has revealed she will be singing in front of the Pope this weekend (as you do).

She's performing at an event on Sunday to celebrate Mother Teresa becoming a saint.

Mother Theresa was Albanian and Rita's family is also Albanian - BUT she admitted to Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight show she's not very religious...

Quote Message: I’m more of a spiritual person, so the Vatican I figured out is actually a big deal. And then I looked at the guest list and I saw p, o, p, e and I thought oh Pope. It's a massive honour, I'm really looking forward to it. So I'm going to do the whole 'What's up Pope?' thing.

You can hear a snippet of what she will be singing in the clip below - before she launches into I've Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts - yes really...

  13. Justin Bieber on chart success and Ed Sheeran

    BBC Radio 1

Justin Bieber wasn't at his most talkative during his Radio 1 Live Lounge performance in LA earlier (we're guessing nerves - scroll down for more on that) but he was much more chatty beforehand speaking down the line to Grimmy.

He admitted he still gets a buzz about getting a number one - his current position in the UK singles chart...

Quote Message: It feels unbelievable. I feel like I put so much work and effort into the process of making the songs it feels good. To get the recognition for sure and just to know that people are liking it and people are being able to smile and have a good time listening to it makes me feel good.

He's currently also at number two with Let Me Love You his track with DJ Snake, while his number one Cold Water was co-written with Major Lazer and Ed Sheeran.

And it seems Ed Sheeran is a subject he's more than happy to chat about...

Quote Message: Me and Ed aren’t super, super close but he’s someone I consider a friend – and I just really appreciate his music. I appreciate who he is as a person. I think that he’s an inspiration to a lot of young people and he makes awesome music that people are inspired by and laugh to, cry to and I think that’s important in music to have those people who bring the emotion out of you. Something about him just makes you like him. He’s very likeable and very, very, very talented – we have to make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid and mess it all up.

Not sure what he thinks Ed could do to mess it up but he did say he's keen to work with the British star again...

Quote Message: We've found kind of like a sweet spot. I think he knows what sounds good range-wise in my vocals and he just has his ear to the streets. He is just very relevant but knows his stuff at the same time – so he brings in a lot of stuff that he grew up listening to and puts it in what he’s making now which is really neat.
  14. Keith Richards to take viewers on a mystery ride during his Lost Weekend

    Keith Richards

Keith Richards is taking over the reins of BBC Four later this month, curating an entire weekend of programming on the channel.

He'll be picking the listings from dusk (19:00) till dawn (04:00) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but it's going to be a "rock 'n' roll mystery ride" as we won't know exactly what's coming in advance.

Instead, the Rolling Stone will guide us through his picks himself, in on-screen segments filmed by director Julien Temple - explaining his choice of movies, documentaries, comedy shows, cartoons, music performances, old ads and more. Here are a few of the gems he's selected...

    • Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps
    • The Man Who Would Be King starring Sean Connery and Michael Caine
    • Archive treats featuring Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix with Keith, and never seen before archive of the Rolling Stones
    • A new 75 minute director's cut of Julien Temple's recent BBC Two documentary Keith Richards - The Origin of the Species

Temple said the shows would be "interwoven with a uniquely relaxed, wide-ranging and intimate interview in which Keith shares his legacy, world views, life philosophy and survival strategies with viewers."

He added: "As dawn breaks, those viewers who have experienced the full ride can celebrate the fact that they have been able to make it all the way and out the other side with Keith Richards as the sun comes up on their TV screens.”

    Good luck!

  15. OneRepublic to cover Adele in the Live Lounge

    BBC Radio 1

Bieber might have kicked things off for Radio 1's Live Lounge Month, but OneRepublic are also getting in on the action this morning, with a performance of their own coming up.

Chatting to Grimmy on the Breakfast show a bit earlier, frontman Ryan Tedder revealed they'll be covering Adele...

    View more on twitter

Tune in from 11 to hear that with Annie Mac. It seems Ryan is in a sharing kind of mood at the moment too. After yesterday's revelations about their forthcoming album Oh My My, he's also given us a look at the album artwork...

  16. Kiefer Sutherland lands in the US charts

    Billboard magazine

For some he'll always be 24's Jack Bauer, but Kiefer Sutherland is trying a new role on for size... as a country singer.

His first album Down in a Hole has debuted at number 18 in Billboards' Americana/Folk Albums chart and number 35 on its Top Country Albums chart.

Here's the official video for his track Not Enough Whiskey so you can judge for yourself...

    View more on youtube

He might not want to quit the day job just yet, as according to Nielsen Music figures he's sold 1,000 copies, but Sutherland told Billboard it would be "pointless" to worry about whether people were sceptical about his music career...

Quote Message: I am a professional actor. This is what I've been doing for the past 30 years and I've been really fortunate to have real success with that. That's what I do, so, of course, it's going to overshadow [the music]. But, I hope it doesn't overshadow it to the point where someone doesn't hear the record for what it is. It's certainly not worth worrying about. It's something that I'll have a much better answer for in about a year.
  17. Justin Bieber kicks off Live Lounge Month from LA

    View more on twitter

Justin Bieber has kicked off Radio 1's Live Lounge month this morning, all the way from Los Angeles.

We'll bring you pics of his amazing home later but if you missed the Live Lounge you can watch it again if you go to the Radio 1 iPlayer.

Speaking to Grimmy from LA before the Live Lounge he admitted that he felt "a bit uncomfortable".

"Sometimes when a few people are watching you it makes you more nervous than a stadium or arena," he admitted.

He wasn't the most talkative of guests - fellow Radio 1 DJ Greg James tweeted his support for Clara who interviewed him between songs...
