  1. Five things we learned today

    Nick Wilmshurst

    BBC Local Live, Leeds

That's all from me, we'll be back on Monday from 08:00. Until then have a great weekend.

Before I disappear, here are five things we didn't know this morning:

    1. I've said it before, I'll say it again. We're right good at sport us...
    2. Even in the middle of our busiest city, there's a nice slice of tranquillity
    3. Worried about that river than can tend to flood? No worries, let's just make it deeper. Problem solved.
    4. Some bike races have very odd names...
    5. And finally, one of our MPs (see below) was a guitarist in a "doom band".

    See you next week!

    Richard Burgon
  2. Weather: Windy evening followed by some rain

    Owain Wyn Evans

    Weather presenter, BBC Look North

The winds continue to strengthen across Yorkshire this evening, and a band of rain will slowly spread towards the east. Minimum temperature of about 14C (57F).

    Weather

A cloudy start to the day tomorrow with any rain gradually easing and clearing.

A brighter story throughout the afternoon, dry with sunny spells and highs 17C (63F) - feeling fresher than recently, despite a lighter breeze.

  3. Lofthouse Park's forgotten World War One past revealed

Historians in West Yorkshire are trying to unlock the forgotten past of a World War One prisoner internment camp in Wakefield.

    Lofthouse Park

Over 1,500 German and Austrian civilians were detained on Lofthouse Park which was turned from an aerodrome and place of entertainment to an internment and prisoner-of-war camp during World War One.

Thousands of pounds are being invested in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time history project to investigate the site's past, and as part of a Heritage Open Day this weekend local residents are being invited to come along to find out more.

Visitors to Lofthouse Gate Working Men’s Club on Sunday between 11:00 and 16:00 will find out about "enemy aliens", individual internees, life in the camp and the odd escape.

  4. Charity bike ride TV star thanks hospital for treatment

Charlie Webster, a TV sports presenter who was placed in a coma after contracting malaria in Rio, has thanked hospital staff in Leeds for nursing her back to health.

The 33-year-old became unwell after watching the Olympic opening ceremony.

She was treated at St James's hospital in Leeds:

  5. Yorkshire Air Ambulance's new £6m copter carries first patients

The first patients have been carried by Yorkshire's new state-of-the-art air ambulance which came into service just a few days ago.

    Yorkshire Air Ambulance copter

Yorkshire Air Ambulance's £6m Airbus H145 helicopter is the first of two which are due to replace the charity's current ageing aircraft.

The first jobs for the crew of the new H145 included a fall from height near Lofthouse, West Yorkshire, and a horse rider  from High Hoyland near Barnsley who needed taking to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment.

The copter is based at Yorkshire Air Ambulance's base at Nostell near Wakefield.

A second H145 is due to be operational by the end of the year, flying from the charity’s northern base at RAF Topcliffe, near Thirsk.

  11. 'No excuse' for Otley's Lizzie Armitstead's missed drugs tests - Wiggins

    The Guardian

Sir Bradley Wiggins says he cannot fathom how his fellow British cyclist Lizzie Armitstead missed three doping tests in less than a year, saying there is "no excuse" for the lapses that put her Olympic participation in jeopardy.

  12. Bike challenge set in Hebden Bridge

This catchily-named event is actually a bike hill climb in Hebden Bridge up a cobbled one-in-four hill.

You can do it on any bike you want, even a Penny Farthing, although that would probably be just a little ridiculous...

  13. Is East Leeds MP 'the most metal politician' in the world?

Just when you thought politics in the UK couldn't get more bizarre, it does!

Richard Burgon, the Labour MP for East Leeds and shadow justice secretary, has just been featured on TeamRock.com as a massive fan of metal.

To prove it, here he is at the Download Festival:

    Richard Burgon

In an interview on the website, he says: "I got changed and went straight to the Sleep gig [from Parliament], and what was nice was that I mentioned to Jeremy Corbyn that I was going to a gig that night, and he sent me a text during the gig saying. 'Enjoy the gig, you deserve it'".

    Richard Burgon

He goes onto say he actually used to be in a band himself: "I was playing guitar in a doom band. It sounded a bit like Electric Wizard but not as good.

"But the nearer it got to the general election, I had so much to do I couldn't commit to rehearsing as often which is a shame."

Read his full interview here (Be warned, there is some strong language in this article).

  14. West Yorkshire's weather: Cloud and rain ahead this afternoon

    Clare Nasir

  15. Hospital failings 'contributed to Leeds student's death'

Treatment given to a seriously injured student at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) after he was attacked in the city centre in October 2011 fell "significantly below expected standards" and "significantly contributed" to his death, a jury at Wakefield Coroner's Court has found.

    Jagdip Randhawa

Jagdip Randhawa (pictured), 19, from Hounslow, died five days after being punched to the ground by professional boxer Clifton Ty Mitchell, who was later jailed for seven years for manslaughter.

The inquest jury heard that, after the assault by Mitchell, who was on bail for another violent offence at the time, Mr Randhawa was placed on a faulty ventilator in hospital, starving him of oxygen and exacerbating the injuries to his head.

The jury concluded that "but for the neglect identified, Mr Randhawa would have survived or would not have died when he did".

But these failings by the hospital were not "gross" and this did not amount to unlawful killing, the jury added.
