The north/south weather divide on hottest day of year

While many in the UK were enjoying the hottest day of the year, it wasn't such a sweaty day in other parts of the country on Tuesday.

The warmest September day since 1911 was recorded in Gravesend, Kent, where it reached 34.4C.

But 230 miles away, the Champions League match between Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach was called off due to heavy rain.

With 32.4mm of rainfall in an hour the match had to be moved to Wednesday.

There were those who were soaked indoors and almost flooded out of shops.

Commuters at Manchester's Victoria were completely drenched. One posted on Instagram: When the rain is that bad in Manchester its coming through the station ceiling, the stair are like rivers (look closely to the back right) and the trains are being cancelled! Joyous evening!

And another posted a video of her driving through flooded water. She wrote: Just in case anyone wasn't aware, it rained in Manchester today

Many packed public lidos and beaches.

A Tooting Bec Lido visitor posted on Instagram: What we lack in sand and palm trees, we make up for in ginormous outdoor swimming pools. Thanks to sizzling September temperatures I've just done 16 lengths in Tooting Bec Lido: doesn't sound like much but it's a 91m pool, freezing cold water and quite a challenge. Gorgeous blue skies and balmy 32 degree temperatures eased my passage.

Another went to Brighton beach.

Market Street - the main shopping street in Manchester city centre looked almost unrecognisable.

Manchester City posted a time-lapse of the rain at the stadium.

Some took to parks to enjoy lunch or an evening stroll.

There were many at Greenwich park.

And some commuters decided to walk home rather than get the Tube.

And of course, surf's always up in Cornwall...
