  1. Five things we've learnt today in North Yorkshire

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

That's all we've got time for today - thanks for being with us. We're back again with our Local Live service from 07:00 on Tuesday.

In the meantime, here are five things we've learnt in North Yorkshire today:

    1. Two hospitals in North Yorkshire have some of the highest rates of cancelled operations in England, new figures reveal
    2. Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has set off from York this morning on the latest leg of a 450-mile cycling challenge
    3. It's the autumn equinox today so we've been out and about looking for signs of the changing season
    4. Newly-discovered photographs of Scarborough taken in the 19th century are to be auctioned off after being found during a recent loft clearance
    5. And the mysterious builder of a 20ft tall straw Teddy Bear in a field in Arkendale has been unearthed and she's revealed her suprising reason for creating the grinning giant

As the sun seems to have returned to North Yorkshire this afternoon, let's finish with this bright and blue BBC Weather Watcher pic of Rowntree Park in York sent in by Garry Gimmick.

  4. Knights 'ineligible' for Championship promotion

    BBC Sport

York City Knights have lost the chance of promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship, because of uncertainty over where they'll play their home games in 2017.

The team travels to Toulouse for their play-off semi-final on Saturday, but the RFL says the club has not provided enough evidence of where home games will be played next year - and so is "not eligible" to move to the Championship.

However, Knights owner John Guildford says the club's reached an agreement with Featherstone Rovers to play matches at their Big Fellas Stadium next year.

The RFL has given the Knights seven days to appeal against its decision.

  5. North Yorkshire's weather: A pleasant afternoon ahead

    Paul Hudson

    Weather presenter, BBC Look North

This afternoon will be dry with spells of sunshine.

The maximum temperature will be about 18C (64F).

  6. York sex ban man awaits new ruling

A man from York is due to find out later this afternoon if he still has to tell police 24 hours before having sex.

    John O'Neill

John O'Neill was cleared of rape last year but given a Sexual Risk Order (SRO) due to comments he made to a GP and a nurse in 2014.

Mr O'Neill said he had been misunderstood, but police argued he posed a risk to the public.

Last month, he lost his legal battle to have the restriction lifted, but District Judge Adrian Lower said the terms of the "frankly unpoliceable" order would be amended.

  8. Pink-footed geese and pumpkins: An autumn abundance at Beningbrough Hall

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

It's the autumn equinox today so I'm out and about for BBC Radio York, looking for signs of the changing season.

Earlier, I showed you a wonderful crop of fruit gathered at Beningbrough Hall, but afterwards I spotted a giant pumpkin.

Mark Pethullis is in charge of the walled gardens at Beninbrough, so I asked him to tell me more about the pumpkins and, as he spends his days outside, about his favourite autumnal signs.

  9. Listen: Cancelled op figures 'taken out of context' - York hospital trust boss

    BBC Radio York

Two hospitals in North Yorkshire have some of the highest rates of cancelled operations in England, new figures reveal.

Research by the BBC now shows that York and Scarborough Hospitals have among the highest rates of cancellations - in fact they're in the top 10 of English hospitals who responded.

In 2015, the York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust carried out just under 74,000 operations, but cancelled more than 2,500 of them within 72 hours of the operation being due.

But Patrick Crowley, the trust's chief executive, has told BBC Radio York some of the figures are "skewed because they've been taken out of context":

  10. Listen: Twenty foot high straw teddy bear supports Arctic husky bid

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

On Tuesday, we finished the day on BBC Local Live with a visually entertaining and slightly surreal note: the somewhat unusual sight - spotted by a BBC Weather Watcher - of a gigantic, grinning teddy bear made from straw and sitting in a field in Arkendale.

Teddy bear mad of straw in Arkendale

We wondered then who was behind the smiling field sculpture and, guess what, we've tracked the artist down.

Wendy Lil told me how you go about building a 20ft tall teddy and why she's done it. The answer may surprise you:

  12. Traffic and travel: Delays in Cayton after accident

    BBC Travel

The B1261 Main Street in Cayton is currently partially blocked and there's slow traffic in both directions near the Green Park Road junction because of an accident involving two vehicles.

Police are directing traffic but some delays can be expected in the area.

  13. Urgent appeal over disappearance of 'distressed and vulnerable' woman

A 36-year-old woman who's in a "distressed and vulnerable" state has gone missing from her home in Glusburn, Craven.

    Leanne Walker

Leanne Walker was last seen by her family at around midnight.

Her disappearance has sparked a major search involving specialist officer and search and rescue teams.

Police are "urgently" appealing for anyone with information about here whereabouts to come forward.

Leanne's described as white, 5ft 5in tall, with long dark-coloured hair and a slim build.

She was last seen wearing a light denim jacket with a white shirt underneath, white jeans and Converse-type trainers.

  14. Pedal power: Countess of Wessex gets on her bike for charity in Yorkshire

    Nick Wilmshurst

    BBC Local Live

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has set off from York this morning on the latest leg of a 450-mile cycling challenge.

    Countess of Wesses

She's biking from Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh to Buckingham Palace to mark the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

She's cycled almost 3,000 miles, including cycling on her static bike at Balmoral, Aberdeenshire, in preparation for the charity challenge.

Sophie Emmerson, from the award scheme, says it's "an amazing challenge".

"It's a long way, 450 miles over seven days. It's a huge achievement and obviously she's going to raise awareness as she's cycling along, as well as raising funds to enable more young people to undertake their Duke of Edinburgh Award."

  15. 'O Autumn, laden with fruit:' Misty mornings and rainbow colours ahead

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

Today is the autumn equinox and so, with great reluctance, I've packed away my shorts and dug out my electric blanket.

Just to really hammer the message home, I've been out with the gardening team at Beningbrough Hall, looking for signs of the changing season.

As you can see - and as the poet William Blake pointed out - it's a riot of a time for fruit! (I may be paraphrasing slightly...)

I'd love to see any signs of autumn you've spotted. If you've got any you can send them in by TwitterFacebook or email

  16. Wish you were there? 19th century Scarborough caught on camera

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

Newly-discovered photographs of Scarborough taken in the 19th century are to be auctioned off after being found during a recent loft clearance.

The magic lantern slides were photographed by William Nowell, manager of the Great Northern Steamship Fishing Company and a keen photographer, between 1895 and 1902.

The fascinating pictures were found in a house in Hessle, East Yorkshire, belonging to Mr Nowell's great-grandson.

As you can see below, they give a great taste of what late Victorian Scarborough was like, but, in a way, it seems that things haven't changed all that much...

  17. Yorkshire's County Championship title bid remains on knife edge

    BBC Sport

Yorkshire's bid to win the County Championship title for a third time in a row is balanced on a knife edge in their clash against title rivals Middlesex.

    Yorkshire's Andrew Hodd in action

With Somerset looking on course to win at Taunton against relegated Nottinghamshire, both Yorkshire and Middlesex need to win if they are to clinch the title.

Yorkshire need to score at least 350 in 110 overs of their first innings and win if they are to retain the Division One trophy, while bonus points are no longer relevant for Middlesex.

And, of course, you can keep up to date with today's action at Lord's from 10:30 with live BBC Local Radio commentary and catch up with our live scorecard.

  19. Strike ballot over college group job losses

    BBC News England

A union is holding a vote on strike action in a row over 141 job losses at the Hull College Group, which includes a site in Harrogate.

    Harrogate College

Julie Kelley from the University and College Union (UCU) said a total of 60 lecturers and other staff would be made redundant at Harrogate College and at sites in Hull and Goole.

She claimed the cuts would "diminish the student experience".

The college said it was operating in a "challenging financial climate".

The UCU said as well as the cuts to the number of lecturers the college would close its three children's nurseries, making 37 staff redundant.

The other losses would come from management, library and IT staff. The union said that 385 jobs had been lost at the college since 2011.

  20. Traffic and travel: Latest North Yorkshire hotspots
