The Inside Story

We spoke to Producer, Simon Lloyd, about the making of 'Gaga for Dada Cut Up'...

Can you sum up the project for us?

'Gaga for Dada Cut Up' is a re-working of Vic Reeve's BBC Four documentary, Gaga for Dada: The Original Art Rebels. Dadaist poet Tristan Tzara was a pioneer of the 'cut up technique', which is where a piece of work is cut up into its constituent parts and randomly reassembled. So that's what we've done to Vic Reeves' documentary on the Dada art movement. Watch it more than once (it takes about five minutes) and you'll see it's different every time - well, to be precise, there are 2,048 different possibilities!

How did you make it?

We took the TV documentary and divided it into multiple smaller sections. These sections are then selected at random and strung together. This process happens every time someone hits the 'play' button. From a technical perspective this was quite straight forward, we just needed to decide on the separate 'cuts' from the documentary and upload them to the video authoring tool, where they can then be randomly joined together. The challenge is have we made it random enough...or is it too random?

What do you want to learn from it featuring on BBC Taster?

We'd like to discover whether the form of this pilot improves the audience's engagement with the content of the documentary that it's been drawn from. Does this make it more likely that they will share their viewing experience with others? Do they value the unique experience that the randomised structure provides?
