  1. Five things we've learnt about North Yorkshire today

    David Ward

    BBC Local Live, York

That's all for today folks - thanks for being with us. I'm back again with our BBC Local Live service on Wednesday morning at 07:00.

In the meantime, here are five things we didn't know about North Yorkshire when we climbed out of bed this morning:

    1. At least two North Yorkshire MPs have had death threats. A BBC investigation shows almost one in four MPs across Yorkshire have received similar abuse.
    2. York Outer MP Julian Sturdy is trying to gather support for the duelling of the northern part of the outer ring-road, the A1237, by discussing the city's traffic and congestion problems in Westminster today.
    3. Putting your green bin out in Hambleton is going to hit you in the pocket after councillors announce they'll be charging households £35 per year, per bin.
    4. Hambleton District Council looks set to progress with plans for a huge new sports village.
    5. Fingers are crossed in Malton for the Palace Cinema, as they could soon be an award-winning picturehouse, after being shortlisted for the Screen Awards Cinema of the Year

We'll meet again tomorrow. See you then!

  2. 'Ambitious' new sports village gets go-ahead in Northallerton

    Sarah Urwin

    BBC Radio York News

Councillors have given the green light to an ambitious new sports village for north Northallerton.

Members at Hambleton District Council have said yes to the concept of the village which would be developed alongside new housing, roads and a school planned for the town.

Plans will now go out for wider public consultation while a funding and delivery plan is drawn up.

The village, which would incorporate existing leisure provision at Hambleton Leisure Centre and the Stone Cross recreation area, will include various sports pitches, as well as cycling, walking and jogging trails.

  3. Catterick MoD site among 13 put up for sale

A Ministry of Defence site in Catterick is among 13 across England to be sold to provide land for 17,017 homes and raise £225m.

Defence minister Mark Lancaster said 12,565 of the homes were "expected to materialise in this Parliament".

He acknowledged this would impact on civilian and military staff but provisions were being made, he said.

The sites include an RAF base, barracks, ex-World War Two airfields and a chaplaincy centre.

  4. Harrogate Town players 'must be braver' - Weaver

    BBC Sport

Harrogate Town aim to continue their good start to the season in National North tonight, when they entertain FC United of Manchester.

    Harrogate Town AFC

Town have won five and drawn three of their opening eight games, and are third in the table.

Last Saturday's home draw against Curzon Ashton was a disappointment, and manager Simon Weaver has told BBC Radio York he wants his side to play more as a unit.

"We're two points off the top of the table after eight games - there's so much to play for. We've got a great group of lads and we know we can perform well," he says.

"We dust ourselves down, learn a bit more about ourselves and try and be a bit braver."

  5. North Yorkshire's weather: A fine and humid afternoon

    Keeley Donovan

    Weather presenter, BBC Look North

A dry and fine afternoon, feeling warm and humid with some sunshine, especially away from the hills.

A gentle south westerly breeze with a top temperature of  about 24C (75F).

  7. What can be done about abuse and threats to our MPs?

    David Ward

    BBC Local Live, York

More now on the disturbing news today concerning the threats made to some of our MPs.

A BBC investigation has found that at least two North Yorkshire MPs have received death threats, and that almost a quarter of all Yorkshire MPs who responded to a BBC survey say they have experienced something similar.

    Computer

So what can be done to combat it? Security expert Will Geddes told BBC Radio York there are ways to deal with it, especially abuse which is received online.

"There are filters which are getting better on social media to block or report abuse when those messages are sent, but it is something that unfortunately one does have to grow a sort of thicker skin to," he says.

"There are various technologies available to identify the people behind some of these messages which obviously the police can utilise."

  8. Listen: Ministers 'need to know about York congestion problems' - city MP

    Jonathan Cowap

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

The problems faced by commuters who live and work in York will be discussed by MPs later.

York Outer Conservative MP Julian Sturdy is raising concerns in Parliament that congestion is limiting the city's economic growth.

The Westminster Hall debate is due to look at projects such as HS2 and the Transpenine Express rail link which will both have an impact on York.

However, it's expected to focus on the need to make the city's outer ring road into a dual carriageway.

Mr Sturdy has been telling me on BBC Radio York why he feels so strongly about the issue:

  9. Watch: York Working Men's Club rises from the ashes

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

Think of working men's clubs and you might think of playing bingo, bad club singers, smoky atmospheres in years gone by, and cheap beer!

But now the image of the club is getting a makeover in York.

I've been for a look round Holgate Working Men's Club, where in five years they'll be celebrating their 100th birthday.

Well...sort of. The old 94-year-old building cost far too much to run so was demolished last year, and like the proverbial phoenix, it's risen from the ashes.

Take a look to find out more:

The grand opening of the new club is due to take place at 19:00 tonight.

  10. Plan to charge for green bin collections gets go-ahead

    Gemma Dillon

    Political Reporter, BBC Radio York

Plans to charge people living in parts of North Yorkshire for green waste collections have just been given the go ahead.

Officials at Hambleton District Council have decided to approve a charge of £35 per year per bin.

A report examined by councillors said several authorities in North Yorkshire already charge for the service.

The highest cost is £39 in Harrogate, while the lowest is Craven at £26.

  12. Listen: Malton's Palace Cinema up for national award

    Gareth Barlow

    Journalist, BBC Radio York

Get out the popcorn, put your feet up and let's head for the cinema because this is great news: the Palace Cinema in Malton has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Screen Awards Cinema of the Year.

When it first opened, there was just one screen, then a second and third were added. One of them has just 12 seats which is thought to be the smallest commercial screen in the country.

It's also one of the first licensed cinemas in the UK.

I've been behind the scenes with owner Jeremy Powell to take a look:

  13. 'Extreme' Sutton Bank road closed for maintenance work

Here's a reminder to drivers that Sutton Bank, one of the steepest A-roads in England, is closed to traffic for essential maintenance work.

    Sutton Bank

The A170 at Sutton Bank in the North York Moors has a one-in-four gradient and is frequently blocked by large vehicles.

North Yorkshire County Council says work on the "extreme gradient" road will take about a week.

Work includes maintenance of a roadside rock face, with traffic diverted through Coxwold and Ampleforth.

  14. Championship race hots up as Yorkshire seek three-in-a-row

    David Ward

    BBC Local Live, York

It's going to go right down to the wire in the County Championship this year.

Yorkshire are currently just four points behind leaders Middlesex with three games to go.

Today, they're back at Headingley for the start of their match against Durham.

And, of course, you can listen to ball-by-ball commentary here from 10:30 this morning.

  15. York's congestion problems 'limiting city's economic growth'

    Gemma Dillon

    Political Reporter, BBC Radio York

A York MP is expected to tell colleagues at Westminster later that the city's congestion and transport problems are limiting its economic growth.

    Congestion

Julian Sturdy, Conservative MP for York Outer, believes if more houses are built to the north of the city, the problems faced by people who live and work here will only get worse.

Mr Sturdy says he wants to focus on the need to make York's outer ring road a dual carriageway as well as other big projects such as HS2 and the Transpenine express rail link to Manchester.

  16. Traffic and travel: Accident in Harrogate sparks delays

    BBC Travel

The A61 Ripon Road in Harrogate is currently partially blocked and there's queuing traffic in both directions between New Park Roundabout and the Coppice Avenue junction, because of an accident involving a car and a motorbike.

  17. North Yorkshire's weather: A cloudy start, brighter later

    Sara Thornton

    Weather presenter, BBC Look North

This morning will be cloudy with rain, drizzle and hill fog possible, but gradually clearing.

Some bright or sunny spells are then expected to develop, especially later in the day.

  18. Yorkshire Cricket Club appoints first female and Asian board members

    BBC Sport

Yorkshire have appointed the first female and first Asian board members in their history, subject to a vote from the club's membership.

    Katherine Mathew and Hanif Malik

Katherine Mathew and Hanif Malik will start their new roles in March 2017 if their nominations are approved.

Mathew, who works for East Riding Council, was elected to a committee role with the club in January 2015.

Malik is the founder and chief executive of a healthy living centre and was awarded an OBE earlier this year.

Earlier this year, Geoffrey Boycott's candidacy was rejected by the members.
