A verdict of natural causes has been recorded by coroner Jacqueline Lake, into the death of a Thetford teenager who was prescribed the contraceptive pill.

Charlotte Lockwood, 15, suffered from menorrhagia (heavy periods) and needed medication to control this, the inquest in Norwich heard.

Her GP, Dr Christopher Riddell, had first prescribed a progesterone-only pill. This was later changed to a combined pill.

Soon after the treatment, Charlotte, who died in August 2014 from a pulmonary embolism, began to lose hair and put on weight. 

She suffered from dramatic mood swings and severe back pain. During this time, the family visited or contacted the Grove Surgery several times.

Norfolk Coroners Court heard that her GP had acted appropriately. 

An independent medical report found it was reasonable for Dr Christopher Riddell to move her from one kind of contraception to another, because he explained she should come in for a face-to-face check up soon after.

In a statement read out to the court on behalf of Charlotte's mother, Emma Cruickshank, she said she wasn't told about the change in medication and the check-up appointment was never made. 

Following the inquest, the family's solicitor Sharon Allison read out a statement on behalf of the family, saying they "remain resolute that their beloved Charlotte was failed on many levels."

The trial of the man accused of killing Weybread couple Peter and Sylvia Stuart is to start almost a month later than originally expected.

The wet weather's hitting work on the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (NDR).

Plans to close Fir Covert Road in Taverham from 20:00 to link it to a new roundabout have been postponed. 

The closure will now be from 20:00 on Monday until no later than 06:00 on Tuesday.

Traffic will be diverted via Drayton High Road, Boundary Road and Reepham Road.

The mother of a teenager from Thetford who died after being prescribed the pill says she wasn't told about the risks. 

An inquest at Norfolk Coroners Court has heard Charlotte Lockwood was moved from one type of contraception to another, with her mother saying that wasn't made clear by the GP.

But the hearing heard an independent medical report found the doctor had acted appropriately. He prescribed the new drug on the basis Charlotte would be brought in for a check up appointment, but that was never made.

The Coroner has retired to consider her verdict.

Rail passengers on the Norwich to London main line face a series of delays starting this weekend as improvement work begins.

Network Rail says the upgrade will bring crucial changes to the route, improving passenger services. 

The work includes the remodelling of a key junction at Shenfield. A road bridge near Gidea Park is to be replaced and £2m spent on replacing overhead wires between Shenfield and Liverpool Street.

Abellio Greater Anglia spokesman Jonathan Denby says the work is disruptive but "it has to be done, and it's about trying to find the least disruptive way of doing it."

Replacement buses will be used, and weekend passengers are advised to check before travelling.

An inquest into the death of a Thetford teenager, who died after being prescribed the contraceptive pill, has heard how her doctor suggested she take it in unusual circumstances.

Charlotte Lockwood was nine-years-old when she started having heavy periods, something which she would later require medication for.

She died in August 2014 at the age of 15.

The inquest has heard how in May 2013 she was put on one kind of contraception to try and control it, and in December that year put onto a different type as the initial medication wasn't working. 

The consultation was done over the phone.

A statement from Charlotte's mother, Emma Cruickshank, was read to Norwich Coroners Court, in which she said she wasn't told she'd have to make an appointment to come in and check everything was ok with the new pills. 

She also said she wasn't told about the risks associated with them.

The doctor who made the prescription told the hearing that doing the prescription over the phone was not a normal course of action, but said he did make it clear a follow-up appointment was needed, and explained the risks associated with the new pill.

The hearing continues.
