    Martin Lewes

    Reporter

This service of news, travel reports and a regular weather forecast has now finished for the day. We'll be back at 08:00 tomorrow.

  2. One in five flooded householders 'still not home'

The latest figures show one in five families who had to leave their homes after the flooding last winter still aren't back in their houses.

    Flood debris including Christmas Tree

The latest figures, showing 997 of the 5,300 families that were made homeless are still in temporary accommodation, has prompted the Cumbria Community Foundation to make a renewed offer of help.

Andy Beeforth from the foundation says many people didn't think they qualified or were still wanting to see what their insurance would pay for.

The foundation appeal raised £10m and more than £4m is still available to be distributed.

  3. Highly-coloured Herdwicks are safely gathered in for back-end sale

    Martin Lewes

    Reporter

No sheepdogs were involved in this gathering - but 108 life-sized but variously-coloured statues of Herdwick sheep are now in the Rheged centre in the latest stage of a project to raise money for the Calvert Trust.

The trust provides outdoor activities for people with disabilities, and it's celebrating its 40th anniversary by trying to raise £1.3m to redevelop its site at Old Windebrowe.

After 13:00 tomorrow, the flock will be taken to the Low Wood Hotel near Windermere, where all will be auctioned on 8 October.

This being the last chance to see them all in one place, here's some pictures.

  5. Carving fork attacker jailed for three years

A 20-year-old man who binged on alcohol and cocaine stabbed two women with a carving fork at an 18th birthday party, Carlisle Crown Court heard today.

Stephen Hodgson, of no fixed address, admitted two counts of wounding, one of possessing a pointed article, and two of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Recorder Philip Curran said he could have blinded one of the women with the weapon. He jailed Hodgson for three years and three months.

  7. Third arrest after soccer fans' minibus is stoned at Barrow

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested by police investigating an incident at the weekend in which a minibus carrying York City fans home from a match in Barrow was stoned.

    Bus with broken windows

The boy, who's now been released on bail, was the third person to be arrested since the bus was attacked on Walney Road after the match.

A man aged 22 and another youth, who's 14, were arrested yesterday.

Two people were treated for cuts to their head and face after the incident.

  8. Sellafield told to clean up after bacteria found in cooling tower

Sellafield has been served with an improvement notice after Legionella bacteria was found in a cooling tower system.

    Sellafield

The Office for Nuclear Regulation said it was a health and safety issue with no impact on nuclear safety.

Sellafield Ltd stressed that the form of bacteria was one that would cause mild symptoms, rather than full-blown Legionnaires' disease, but admitted the cleaning regime "wasn't as robust as it should have been."

  9. Glenridding gets decked out to keep the water at bay

    Martin Lewes

    Reporter

The Glenridding Hotel, flooded repeatedly last winter, is after nine months finally nearing the point where it can reopen, with decking being built across the open area by the beck.

  13. Why Elliot, 26, can say 'I've got 26 sons'

A charity worker from Troutbeck, near Windermere, is celebrating the arrival of twins with his Kenyan wife, and saying that in effect gives him 26 sons.

Eliot with wife and 26 boys

Eliot, 26, and his Kenyan wife Metrine Nandalo run the Noah Initiative, a community charity in Western Kenya that provides a home for 24 fatherless boys.

Withe the addition of the newly-born twins, Elliot says: “It is crazy. I’m 26 and doing things that you would expect a much more accomplished person to be doing - but it just goes to show that age is just a number."

Elliot's family in Windermere runs English Lakes Hotels, which owns a number of hotels including the Low Wood Resort.

  14. Corbyn: I won't intervene in constituency selections

    Martin Lewes

    Reporter

Two of Cumbria's Labour MPs may be about to fight a game of electoral musical chairs because of constituency boundary changes.

Jamie Reed in Copeland and Sue Hayman in Workington will be the most radically-affected by the changes, which will reduce the number of seats in Cumbria from six to five.

    View more on twitter

One of the two seats, according to these predictions, would be vulnerable to a Conservative takeover, which could mean the two west Cumbrian MPs depend very much on local party members to continue their political careers.

Jamie Reed resigned his shadow ministry minutes after Mr Corbyn became party leader, and has since fought a vigorous battle over social networks with the leader's supporters.

  15. YMCA lays plans for £6m Lakeside facelift

The YMCA is preparing the ground for a major fundraising drive next year before replacing many of the buildings at its flagship Lakeside outdoor activity centre on the shores of Windermere.

    Artist's impresison of new building

The YMCA's already got planning consent for a new youth and school facility, and has put a £6m pricetag on the work.

The centre's visited by up to 10,000 youngsters every year in buildings that date back to the early 1950s, and a spokesman said that without a complete transformation of the facilities, in the long term Lakeside could even be forced to close.
