  1. Five things we've learnt about North Yorkshire today

    David Ward

    BBC Local Live, York

That's all we've got time for today - thanks for being with us. We're back again with our Local Live service from 07:00 tomorrow.

In the meantime, here are five things we didn't know about North Yorkshire when we got up this morning.

    1. The first of two new colleges has opened in Scarborough. About 200 students have walked through the doors of the town's University Technical College today before many more start at Coventry University's Scarborough campus next week
    2. It's the last day for people in York to have their say on the Local Plan, the scheme that will see 11,000 new homes being built in and around the city
    3. People will gather in Norton tonight to discuss how to get people out of their cars when making the short journey to and from Malton
    4. A report claims that the cost of tackling climate change cut be cut by around a half if a network of pipes is built under the North sea close to the Yorkshire coastline
    5. Yorkshire are not going to have it all their own way as they try to win a hat-trick of County Championship titles
  2. Listen: New college's provide 'excellent educational choice' - Scarborough MP Robert Goodwill

    Georgey Spanswick

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

Let's get some more now on the opening this morning of the new University Technical College in Scarborough.

Nearly 200 students started there this morning and next week many more will begin courses at Coventry University's Scarborough campus.

Conservative MP for Scarborough Robert Goodwill told me they're great additions to the town...

  3. Tribute match for hero VC footballer

    Donald Simpson Bell

A football match has taken place in France in honour of the only English professional player to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

Harrogate-born Donald Simpson Bell was playing football for Bradford Park Avenue when World War One broke out.

He left the club to fight, saying he was "duty-bound to join the ranks."

Her was awarded the VC for his part in knocking out a machine-gun post on the fifth day of the Battle of the Somme.

The commemorative match saw a team featuring players from the Yorkshire Regiment and Bradford Park Avenue beat French side Albert 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.

  4. Lunch not tasting too good for Yorkshire's cricketers

    BBC Sport

It's not been a great first session for Yorkshire in their vital County Championship match against Somerset at Headingley.

They've gone back to the pavilion for lunch on 86-4 after winning the toss and deciding to bat.

Remember a win this week, and then again at Lords next week against Middlesex, will guarantee them a third title in three years.

Fingers crossed for a better afternoon session!

  5. Watch: 'How do I get out' of this invalid carriage?

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

Many people like to collect different things, stamps, coins, stickers immediately come to mind.

Well, this morning I've been to see a man at a secret North Yorkshire location who collects something a little more unusual....invalid carriages!

Simon McKeown even let me take one for a spin.

  6. Pump CO2 into North Sea bedrock, report urges

    Roger Harrabin

    BBC environment analyst

The cost of tackling climate change could be slashed if a network of pipes was built to store waste carbon dioxide under the North Sea, a report has said.

    Power station

The technology - carbon capture and storage (CCS) – involves pumping CO2 emissions from power stations into rock formations.

It is expensive, but The Parliamentary Advisory Group on CCS says the costs can be halved if the system to deliver the London Olympics is copied.

  9. Traffic and travel: Slow traffic heading into Harrogate

    BBC Travel

Not anything to really worry about but there are slight delays on the A661 as you make your way into Harrogate from the Kestrel roundabout.

This is just due to lots of people trying to make their way into the town, rather than an accident.

  10. First students arrive at Scarborough's University Technical College

    Jonathan Cowap

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

I've been outside the new University Technical College as it opened its doors to students this morning.

A short time ago I was joined by a handful of the near 200 students who are beginning the next stage of their education.

Shortly after arriving they were involved in a team-building exercise.

"It's a great way to get to know the students," assistant principle Matt Osbourne told me.

  11. Yorkshire win toss in pivotal Championship match

    BBC Sport

Just two games to go and it couldn't be closer in the County Championship.

Yorkshire start this penultimate round of fixtures just a single point behind leaders Middlesex who they play at Lords next week.

But first, it's a match against third-placed Somerset who themselves have a chance of claiming the title.

The good news at Headingley is that Andrew Gale has won the toss and Yorkshire will bat first. You can listen to ball-by-ball commentary with Dave Callaghan and the team by clicking here.

  12. Watch: There ain't no party like a Taddy party

    Mark Ansell

    BBC Look North reporter

Back in December, Tadcaster was split in two when the town's bridge collapsed during the Christmas floods.

Despite not being able to hold their usual parade, the community came back together again for the annual Tadcaster carnival yesterday.

I went along for a look, along with a couple of members of a late 1990s pop group S-Club, and thousands of others.

  13. Listen: 'Sloppy' Knights can bounce back in play-offs - coach James Ford

    BBC Sport

York City Knights ended their Super 8s campaign yesterday with a 50-8 defeat at Keighley.

It means they finish in 5th place in the league table and will now travel to either Rochdale or Toulouse in the play-off semi-finals in a fortnight.

Coach James Ford told BBC Radio York's Andy Atkinson that tiredness played a big part in his side's defeat and insisted they'd be better prepared for the next game...

  15. Time to put your best foot forward in Ryedale?

    David Ward

    BBC Local Live, York

We all know how frustrating it can be when you're caught up in a traffic jam, but have you really considered that you may be part of the problem?

Well tonight a meeting will take place in Norton near Malton to look at ways of getting people out of their cars when making the short journey between the two places.

It follows claims by the campaign group 'Action on Traffic - Malton and Norton' that both towns are at a virtual standstill and congestion will only worsen once planned extra development and train services arrive.

They'd also like to see more pedestrian and cycling routes linking the towns.

  18. Last chance to have say on York's Local Plan

    Gemma Dillon

    Political Reporter, BBC Radio York

Today's the deadline for people in York to give their views on what's being described as one of the biggest decisions the city has had to make for a generation.

City of York Council wants to know what people think about a scheme to build thousands of new homes.

If voted through next year, York's Local Plan will see nearly 11,000 new homes built between now and 2032.

Experts say a scarcity of housing is jeopardising the city's economy because house prices and rents have outstripped workers' pay. But where to build them?

Well, the council claims it has the answer. We're told that not only will the Local Plan support economic growth by addressing the housing shortage, it'll also protect the green belt.

He came first in the final of the trunk and arms double sculls yesterday with his partner Lauren Rowles.

We'll have more on this a little bit later.
