  8. Analysis: 'Northern Powerhouse' resignation

    Kamal Ahmed

    Economics editor

    Signage for 'the North'

The former Goldman Sachs banker Jim O'Neill was passionate about a lot of things - Man Utd being one of them.

He was also a firm believer in the Northern Powerhouse and close relations with China.

Both have found themselves questioned since Theresa May became prime minister.

Lord O'Neill was very much a George Osborne hire. The former chancellor was delighted when he agreed to join the Treasury team. His resignation sees the dismantling of another part of the Cameron-Osborne legacy.

George Osbourne and David Cameron speaking in the North

I doubt Lord O'Neill felt all that comfortable in a May-led administration, evidenced by his decision to quit the Conservative whip in the Lords and become a cross bencher.

And the prime minister has been clear - this is a new chapter in Conservative politics.

  10. Farm fires warning after summer blazes

    Jenny Cork

    BBC Sheffield news

Farmers are being urged to take steps to protect their livelihoods, after a large number of farm fires in the past three months.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has attended 39 fires since June either on farm sites or involving crops in fields.

Many of those were started deliberately, with most farms’ isolated locations, open boundaries and easily ignitable materials like hay and straw making them particularly vulnerable to arson.

To help prevent fires, farmers are being asked to:

    • Remove hay and straw as soon as possible after harvesting
    • Storefuels, fertilisers and pesticides securely – preferably under lock and key
    • Check unoccupied and remote areas of the farm to make sure they are safe and secure

  12. Key 'Northern Powerhouse' figure quits government

Treasury minister Lord O'Neill, a key figure in pushing the Conservatives' "Northern Powerhouse" agenda, has resigned from the government.

    Jim O'Neill

The former Goldman Sachs executive, also a key advocate of the UK forging strong links with China, was commercial secretary for 18 months.

In a statement, the economist said he joined the government largely to help "deliver the Northern Powerhouse, and to help boost our economic ties with key growing economies around the world, especially China and India and other rapidly emerging economies".

  17. Kerry Needham: 'It's an honour to have such dedicated officers by my side'

    Jenny Cork

    BBC Sheffield news

The mother of missing toddler Ben Needham has spoken out about her support for the latest police operation to find out what happened to her son.

Officers are preparing to start digging again on the Greek island where he disappeared 25 years ago.

    Kerry Needham

Konstantinos Barkas, also known as Dino, was clearing land with an excavator close to where the 21-month-old was playing on the day he vanished in 1991 and may be responsible for his death, a friend of the builder has reportedly told police.

The driver reportedly died of stomach cancer last year, months before detectives from South Yorkshire Police arrived on the island for a renewed investigation. But Mr Barkas's widow Varvara strongly dismissed any suggestions her late husband had killed Ben in an accident when asked by the Sunday Mirror.
