Sutton, 59, resigned in April, having been suspended pending an investigation into the claims.
Couple 'shocked' by snake encounter
The couple who found the snake in their car were left "a bit shaky" by their unexpected encounter while driving on the M5 last night, police said.
Claire Brealey, from Bristol, said she was shocked when she realised the reptile was inside the vehicle they had just bought.
"The dog was in the back of the car. I glanced back and saw this bright orange and white snake wrapped around his legs," she said
"I turned to my partner and said, 'there's a snake in the back of the car.'"
They dismantled the car's interior when they got home in an attempt to find the snake, but it has not been located.
"We think it's still in the car," she said.

The cameras would gather evidence as the officer works, and are aimed at changing offender behaviour.
Several other forces, including Staffordshire Police and the Metropolitan force, already use the technology.
