  1. Five things we've learnt today in North Yorkshire

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

That's the end of our live coverage for today, thanks for being with us. We'll be back at 07:00 on Thursday.

Meanwhile, here are five things we've learned today:

    1. Two men have appeared at Leeds Crown Court charged with the murder of a Scarborough man
    2. Several nursery owners in North Yorkshire say the government's trial of a new free 30-hour childcare scheme in the city is not good news for them
    3. Parts of York have been turned into illuminated art installations as part of the city's festival of light which starts tonight
    4. A team of young Scarborough gymnasts has won Britain's first ever medal in TeamGym
    5. And it's "official" (apparently), we're a miserable lot. Just over 40% of workers in our region don't describe themselves as happy at work

I thought we'd finish today with a little more autumnal majesty sitting right on our doorstep.

    Horses

David Fullerton sent in this tranquil scene of horses in the early morning mist in Hillam, near Selby.

I think it'd probably make a good album cover for an album of pastoral music.

  2. Listen: New man at City vows to 'sort it' after third defeat

    BBC Sport

York City are just one point above the relegation zone in the National League after losing 2-0 at Southport on Tuesday.

This was the third match in charge for new manager Gary Mills, who says the team's performance simply "wasn't good enough".

However, Mills has vowed to turn things around:

  3. Mother of all Halloween displays at the Whitby ruin that inspired Dracula

    Yorkshire Post

Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire has been dramatically lit up to mark Halloween.

The ruined Benedictine abbey is a Grade I-listed building, and it was made famous for helping to inspire Bram Stoker’s horror classic Dracula.

  4. BreakingSix-year-old girl missing in York

A six-year-old girl has gone missing from the St Benedict Road area in York.

Police have made an urgent appeal for anyone with information about her whereabouts to get in touch.

They says she's wearing a black coat over a pink, striped dress and black leggings.

  5. North Yorkshire in pictures: Sunshine on a hazy day

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

As the earth tilts away from the sun bringing the changing of the season, autumn grows ever more colourful, temperatures drop, darkness descends earlier - and North Yorkshire's camera-wielders leap into action.

They've been out capturing evocative shots of a beautiful county in a period of seasonal transition.

    Weather pics

Mark Laycock took the top left pic, which is Whernside from Ribblehead Station, and to the right of that is Freddie's sunrise at Scarborough seen from Scalby Mills.

The silent, still, mist on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal this morning caught the photographic attention of Daniel Martin, and to the right of that the peace of the South Bay in Scarborough has been snapped by Kate Lea.

We always enjoy getting your pics. Remember you can get in touch and send your photos via TwitterFacebook or email.

  6. North Yorkshire's weather: A cloudy and breezy afternoon

    Abbie Dewhurst

    Weather Presenter, BBC Look North

This afternoon will continue rather cloudy at times, however there will also be some brighter periods as well, more especially in the east.

Breezy at times but with temperatures on the mild side with highs of about 14C (57F).

  7. Two men in court charged with murder of Scarborough man

Two men have appeared at Leeds Crown Court charged with the murder of a Scarborough man.

    Richard Walker

Richard Walker (pictured), 50, was found dead at his flat in the town last Thursday.

Clifford Honeyman, 42, and Andrew Stevenson, 39, both of no fixed above, have been remanded in custody.

They're due to appear before Leeds Crown Court on 23 November.

The top stories from our York newsroom this lunchtime include:

  9. E-fit appeal over bank card thieves

    BBC Radio York

Two men who duped their way into a house in Eggborough by pretending they needed to look at a map are being sought by police.

The incident happened at about 15:00 on Friday 7 October and, once in the address, one of the men took a purse before both fled.

The victim’s bank card was later used at Abbeyside Filling Station in Selby.

Detectives have issued e-fits of the two men who are both thought to be in their 30s. One of them is thought to be a Spanish-speaker.

  10. 'Champagne nurseries for lemonade costs': Free childcare scheme criticised

    BBC Radio York

Good news for parents, perhaps, but several nursery owners in York say the government's trial of a new free 30-hour childcare scheme in the city is not good news for them:

  11. Watch: Illuminating York's spectacular cathedral of light

    Ian White

    Journalist, BBC Look North

Recently, I've been seeing York in a whole  new light - and tonight you can too.

It's the eleventh Illuminating York festival, where parts of the city are lit up with art installations.

I've been to meet Andrew Knight, one of the curators of the whole event, and he talked me through what promises to be a spectacular light show.

  12. North Yorkshire in pictures: The dew on a ewe

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

The mornings are getting chilly which means dew on the grass and mist in the air, a phenomenon beautifully captured by Kelly Harland, who's sent us these evocative pics.

    Sheep

Kelly says: "A lovely misty morning, so took these pictures taken just inland from Runswick Bay."

Nice that the sheep all knew to look at the camera at the same time!

  13. Mike Hookem and Steven Woolfe clash referred to French police

The clash at the European Parliament earlier this month between Yorkshire and Humber UKIP MEP Mike Hookem (pictured left) and his party colleague Steven Woolfe (pictured right) has been reported to the French police.

    Mike Hookem and Steven Woolfe

European Parliament president Martin Schulz said he had referred the "regrettable" incident after a probe.

The parliament's advisory committee on conduct concluded the two men's account of events "diverged substantially".

Mr Woolfe was rushed to hospital after collapsing in the parliament later on the day of the incident.

  14. Young Scarborough gymnasts win Britain's first ever medal in TeamGym

    Joanita Musisi

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

There's some great news today about a team of young gymnasts in Scarborough.

Members of the Scarborough Gymnastics Academy were chosen to represent Team GB at a European Championship event in Slovenia for an event called TeamGym.

It's a team competition which includes routines being performed on three pieces of apparatus: floor, trampette and a tumbling track.

And, as you can see in these joy-filled pics, the competition went very well for them.

    Gym kids in sboro

Two of the team, Damien and Brodie, won Britain's first ever medal in this kind of gymnastics - they won bronze - and other members of the team all reached their finals.

I met the team today and they told me they are "all really buzzing" and "chuffed to bits"!

  15. Yorkshire workers 'unhappiest in country'

Just over 40% of workers in the Yorkshire and Humber region would not describe themselves as happy at work and would move jobs for better benefits, according to research by employee benefits provider Perkbox.

    Unhappy worker

The happiest workers hail from the East Midlands, with a whopping 80% claiming to be happy.

On the plus side, the research does say that happiness does increase over the working week - so you're more than halfway there to the best you're going to feel...

  16. A feast of sensory sensations at Northallerton's Pendragon Centre

    Jonathan Cowap

    Presenter, BBC Radio York

An industrial estate on the outskirts of Northallerton may seem like an unlikely place for a sensory centre for young people with special needs, but that's what's happening at the Pendragon Multi-Sensory Centre.

The project to get the centre up and running has been a year-long labour of love, hard work and a lot of fundraising - £750,000 in fact.

I've been there to meet the team and some of the young users of the centre and their carers, including Bev Thirnton, a relief care worker with Mencap, who was there with young Lizz and James:

It would have been wrong while there not to have tried out the slide - just to check everything was up to scratch, of course...

  17. North Yorkshire's weather: A breezy day with risk of rain

    Abbie Dewhurst

    Weather Presenter, BBC Look North

Today will be cloudy at times, with the risk of some rain or drizzle.

Breezy at times but temperature highs of about 14C (57F).

  18. Victoria Wood to be remembered at Merchant Adventurers' Hall event

    The Press

A York charity will celebrate the life of its patron Victoria Wood at a special event at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall later this year.

The comedian was originally due to visit the historic property last December, to join Jessie’s Fund in celebrating its 20th anniversary, but was unable to attend because she was privately fighting cancer.

  19. Illuminating York: See the light at York Minster

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live, York

Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend York's festival of light which starts tonight.

The Illuminating York festival features parts of the city lit up with art installations and runs for the next four evenings.

There are seven new displays in places like the National Railway Museum, the Shambles, King's Square and a spectacular light show in the Minster.

Below the trees, another view of the Light Masonry installation and to the left of that, Orbit by studio PSK in the Shambles.

Clearly, if you're in York tonight then you're in for a treat!
