  2. Oasis films premiere this weekend

Oasis fans can indulge in a full-on nostalgia fest this weekend, as two films on the band make their debut.

Supersonic, the Matt Whitecross documentary, premieres in both London and Manchester this weekend and hits cinemas the same day - with Liam Gallagher set to hop on a helicopter between the two events so he can be at both.

And the BBC's new documentary Oasis in Their Own Words has debuted on the iPlayer today.

The film charts the band’s meteoric rise from a bunch of lads in Manchester, to the biggest British band of their generation, as they saw it themselves.

    Here's a short trailer...

You can also test your knowledge of the Gallagher brothers' finest put downs in this highly entertaining BBC Music quiz - Noel or Liam? Match the celebrity insult to the Oasis brother.

Meanwhile another gem from the Oasis archive is being released to fans pre-ordering the reissue of third album Be Here Now. It's a recording of Angel Child from the legendary Mustique Demos - recorded on the Carribean island in 1996 and mislaid until recently. You can listen to Angel Child on Vevo.

We'll also bring you all the gossip from Sunday's Supersonic premiere in Monday's Music News LIVE.

  4. Tom Odell questions The 1975's 'epicurean' lyrics in Live Lounge

    Mark Savage

    Music reporter

    Tom Odell

So, if you were tuned into Radio 1 earlier, you'll have heard Tom Odell and his ever-so-posh string sections playing a heart-rending version of his current single Here I Am, and a cover of The 1975's The Sound. If not, you can hear it on the iPlayer...

We caught him up afterwards for a debrief.

How do you think that went?

I felt like that went pretty well. I'm happy.

Will you listen back to it, or read your mentions on Twitter?

Erm… Probably in about two weeks’ time. We’re going on tour on Sunday so I have to keep my mind on that.

Here I Am is such an emotional song. When you perform it, do you go back to the place you were when you wrote it?

To be honest with you, it does always get a bit like that. But it’s important. It’s better to dwell on that and remember why you wrote it than be looking around the room.

What's more important about the Live Lounge, selling a few extra records, or the artistic satisfaction?

Of course there’s a promotional element to it. You do these shows because it puts the music in front of people. You should never stop doing that.

But what’s so amazing about Live Lounge is you’re able to express yourself with someone else’s song and put your artistic spirit into it. It’s a really exciting thing to do.

Is it good to be prompted to work on a cover version?

Yes! I never sit down and learn other people’s songs any more. And after I do a Live Lounge, I’m always like ‘I should do this more often’. It’s great. It helps your songwriting.

There's a line in The Sound about "a simple epicurean philosophy". Do you know what that means?

No I don’t know what epicurean* means.  I should have looked that up before I sang it. Does anyone know what epicurean means? I wonder if the guy from The 1975 knows what it means. I’m not convinced.

*a person devoted to sensual enjoyment, especially that derived from fine food and drink.

You'll have the opportunity to find out tonight, when The 1975 wrap up Radio 1's Live Lounge month with a spectacular performance, accompanied by the BBC Philharmonic at Blackpool Tower Ballroom

  5. Van Morrison plays live gig for Radio 2

Legendary singer-songwriter Van Morrison graced the BBC's Radio Theatre for a special recorded live performance on Thursday night.

Here is he performing Too Late from his latest album Keep Me Singing.

And you can still watch the whole show on iPlayer.

  6. Bob Marley musical comes to the stage

    Bob Marley

A stage musical based on the life and music of Bob Marley is coming, and will have its premiere in Birmingham in March.

One Love: The Bob Marley Musical will feature the reggae legend's classic tracks like No Woman No Cry, Exodus and Jamming.

It has the blessing of his family, including daughter Cadella, who said Birmingham was a "natural place for its UK premiere", adding:

Quote Message: With its great mix of cultures, it’s a city where my father performed to audiences that were captivated by his presence, and we have no doubt that telling the story through music to a new generation in Birmingham will be part of his continuing legacy.

The show will be written and directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and is an updated version of his show Marley, which he staged in Baltimore last year.

The new show will open at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 10 March and run to 8 April.

  7. Stranger Things band S U R V I V E announce UK dates

    NME

    S U R V I V E

S U R V I V E, the band behind the much-loved soundtrack to Netflix smash Stranger Things, have announced a several UK shows next year. The Texan quartet will play in Manchester's Deaf Institute on 21 February 2017 and a show at east London venue Village Underground the day after, as well as a previously announced date in Bristol on 19 February.

Tickets for the shows in support of their new album RR7349 go on sale on Monday.

Only two of the band, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, composed the Stranger Things soundtrack (there wasn't the budget to employ the full band) after the writer-directors of the series, the Duffer Brothers, found their music on Spotify.

Dixon and Stein will perform selections from the soundtrack at Unsound festival in Poland later this month. Read more

  8. Blossoms share their summer with Newsbeat

    BBC Newsbeat

Blossoms at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Exeter 2016

Stockport newbies Blossoms have had a busy year - coming fourth on the BBC's Sound of 2016, putting out a debut album which spent two weeks at number one and touring the world to play 150 gigs including Glastonbury.

The five-piece, who formed in a scaffold yard three years ago, are the subject of a new video documentary from Newsbeat.

They called their past summer "life-changing", but added that it was "just the start".

"We're always looking ahead. We want longevity," said singer Tom Ogden.

"We are very proud of what we've done... To come from complete obscurity is quite remarkable, it doesn't really happen that much these days."

Bassist Charlie Salt added: "I feel like we've got some solid foundations to build on and we want to just carry on on this trajectory."

  9. Mura Masa shares new single Love$ick featuring A$AP Rocky

    BBC Radio 1

Mura Masa's new collaboration with US rapper A$AP Rocky is another of today's fine new releases.

The young British producer - who came joint fifth in the BBC's Sound of 2016 - debuted Love$ick as Annie Mac's Hottest Record on Radio 1 last night.

Otherwise known as 20-year-old Alex Crossan, he popped by the studio on his way to play a sold out show at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire to explain how he got A$AP Rocky on board...

"He was in London for a couple of weeks and he wanted to get in the studio. We booked Abbey Road, because I wanted him to know that I was taking it seriously! We did it in studio two which is where the Beatles did all their songs.

"I'm quite eager for people to know that we did actually meet up, because it's rarer and rarer. I've been a fan of his since his first mixtape and album. He's the real deal as well, he just came in, did it, made it up on the spot... he's amazing."

Listen to the track and interview below...

And if you missed Mura Masa's Live Lounge performance earlier this month you can still watch his performance of single Firefly featuring Bonzai and a cover of Major Lazer's Lean On.

The debut album is due in early 2017.

  10. Jagwar Mar share dreamy second track from forthcoming album

    Jagwar Ma

Australian dance trio Jagwar Ma have unveiled the second new track for their forthcoming second album Every Now & Then, which is due out on 14 October.

The gently euphoric Slipping follows previous tracks O B 1 and Give Me A Reason.

The band are due to play a string off dates in the UK in October and have just announced their biggest London headline show to date, at The Forum in Kentish Town on 15 March.

The new album was partly recorded in France and London with contributions from Warpaint's drummer Stella Mozgawa and James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco.

  11. Tom Odell had one day to rehearse for the Live Lounge

    Mark Savage

    Music reporter

    View more on twitter

Tom Odell has just sat down in Radio 1's Live Lounge to play his new single, Here I Am, as well as a cover of The 1975's The Sound.

I caught up with him for a brief chat about how he prepared for the performance. Here's what he said...

How long in advance do you start preparing?

I was very late this year. I was meant to have decided my cover a month ago, and I didn’t do it until last week. I'm always searching for a good lyric. That’s what, for me, is important.

You’ve chosen The 1975’s The Sound today. What stood out about that song?

I thought the lyrics were very interesting. And I knew I could make it different. I would never choose a ballad because I tend to do the cover as a ballad.

When did you go into rehearsals?

I’ve got a nine-piece string section and we went into rehearsal yesterday.

    Was that enough time?

We cut it pretty fine! The strings only came in for about two-and-a-half hours. But they’re amazing, they’re the reason it happens.

So you’re completely relaxed about it now?

If you’d asked me yesterday I would have felt a bit nervous… But I know they’re good, and now I feel completely confident about it.

...You can hear how it's going any minute now on BBC Radio 1.

  12. US band appeals to trademark 'offensive' name

    The Slants

A band from Oregon has gone to the US Supreme court in a bid to trademark their racially "offensive" name.

Asian-American dance-rock band The Slants say their trademark was refused because the name is disparaging to Asian-Americans.

They have acknowledged the name may offend, but say they chose it deliberately to "reappropriate" its meaning.

The Slants had first attempted to register their band name in 2011, and sued after they were refused.

  13. Steve Reich's ticket to ride in Liverpool

    Video content

Video caption: Real trains accompany Steve Reich's Different Trains concert

The rumble of real trains provided a fitting accompaniment for a live performance of composer Steve Reich's 1988 work Different Trains in Liverpool last night.

The concert took place at the historic Edge Hill station, where George Stephenson's Rocket travelled in 1830, and which is still very much a working station.

Reich introduced the show, performed by the London Contemporary Orchestra, four days before his 80th birthday.

He also told BBC 6 Music's Radcliffe and Maconie about the story behind the piece - you can listen below.

You can also hear him performing his 'clapping music' on Front Row from Wednesday's Music News LIVE.

  14. Robbie says family 'keeps me on the rails'

    Robbie Williams and Ayda Field

Robbie Williams says he is no longer likely to "fall off the rails", having found contentment with his wife, Ayda Field and two children.

The singer, who had a well-documented struggle with depression and substance abuse in his 30s, said having a family "focuses the mind".

"Before the kids and the wife, it [his career] wasn't just a job," he told Chris Evans' Radio 2 Breakfast Show.

Quote Message: It was trying to fill in all the blanks that were in the soul. And that didn't make sense. I got to the top of the mountain and it was like, 'Ow, I'm still in pain'. Then the wife came, then the kids came, and now it all makes sense... because souls are depending on me. My wife depends on me, my kids depend on me. I haven't got the excuse to fall of the rails, to maybe not turn up to this interview, to watch what I'm saying. It's a blessing.

You can read more on that chat or listen to the highlights below, where he and Chris discuss his recent Apple Music Festival performance and how his new album The Heavy Entertainment Show (due 4 November) has been three years in the making...

Video caption: Robbie tells Chris about his big return with new album The Heavy Entertainment Show.

Robbie's also shared the elaborate new video for the first single off his album, the tongue in cheek track Party Like A Russian. There's a teaser below, or you can watch the whole thing on his Facebook page now...

  15. Lykke Li and Peter, Bjorn and John join forces

    Lykke Li

Like some kind of Swedish avengers or Scandi-pop justice league, pop pixie Lykke Li and producers Peter Bjorn and John have teamned up for a new project called LIV.

They've just released their debut single a lovely slice of acoustic folky pop called Wings of Love.

A mission statement on the official website for their art collective, Ingrid, says:

"The world is one step away from the gutter. Times are changing, attention is shifting so quickly; can we find time to live?

We had to. The top tens and the parties of the world somehow were not enough. We needed something.

    Something less.

We needed love & life itself. Inspiration."

    Amen to that.
