Workers on Virgin Trains East Coast have begun a 24-hour strike this morning in a long-running dispute over jobs.

The RMT union said about 1,800 members, including train crew and some drivers, are taking action against threatened job cuts and disputes over working conditions and safety.

Virgin Trains East Coast, which operates services between London, eastern England and Scotland, said it was making changes to customer-facing roles.

The company said it would be running a full timetable during the strike but there will be some changes to on-board catering and it may not be able to open the food bar or run a trolley service in standard class, and the first class menu will be reduced.

I think the message is to stock up on food before you travel.

  6. Littleport road death: 'Incident was clearly avoidable'

    Adam Jinkerson

    BBC Local Live

Police investigating the death of two men killed in a crash near Littleport, Cambridgeshire, say the incident was "avoidable".

PC James Thorne said: "Mitchell Butler-Eldridge made a conscious decision to overtake a vehicle when it was clearly dangerous to do so and this resulted in the tragic loss of life.

Flowers lay at the side of the road

"This incident was clearly avoidable had he thought about his actions and I welcome the sentence passed.

"One bad driving decision and a dangerous manoeuvre has robbed two families of loved ones, and this sentence should serve as a deterrent to people whose standard of driving falls below what we, as society, expect."

Butler-Eldridge, 28, of Sydney Terrace, King's Lynn, Norfolk, was jailed for five years after pleading guilty at Cambridge Crown Court to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving at a previous hearing.

  7. Weather: Dry tonight but turning wet tomorrow
