North Yorkshire's 'ore'-some contribution to World War One
Jonathan Cowap
Presenter, BBC Radio York
If I asked you to name the things that helped us win World War One, the chances are that one of the last things you'd think of is geology.
But a knowledge of geology has played a vital role in warfare throughout history...
Now the North East Yorkshire Geology Trust has been awarded a grant of almost £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to explore how geology changed the course of the war.
Mike Windle, from the trust, explains they're planning to focus their research on our part of the country:
Tour de Yorkshire's visit to Scarborough 'brilliant' for town
Racing will begin or end in Scarborough, Tadcaster, Harrogate, Bradford, Bridlington and Sheffield in the three-day event from 28-30 April next year, with the full route and details due to be announced later this year.
Derek Bastiman, leader of Scarborough Borough Council, says: "The race organisers obviously can't get enough of the Yorkshire coast with both Scarborough and our neighbours Bridlington featuring in the start-finish line up. This level of recognition is brilliant for our part of the county."
Heathrow expansion plan praised by North Yorkshire MP
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says the decision is "truly momentous" and said expansion will improve the UK's connections with the rest of the world and support trade and jobs.
However, the decision faces a long consultation before it becomes final.
West Yorkshire's weather: A bright but cool afternoon
Thirsk is named as one of the top five small market towns in the UK, but it's just missed out going through to the finals of the Great British High Street Awards
Tadcaster's one of six Yorkshire towns and cities earmarked to host start and finish events during the prestigious cycle race which will be in its third year in 2017.
Carl Les, leader of North Yorkshire County Council, says next year's race will make sure the county's firmly on the international cycling map - and will have particular impact on Tadcaster.
"This race will benefit all the host towns and their surrounding areas, particularly giving Tadcaster a boost in its recovery from the devastating floods of last December. It will be a great opportunity to see pictures of the rebuilt Tadcaster Bridge in the television coverage," he says.
Nightmare time for Knaresborough cafe 'let down by system'
Nine out of 10 councils in the UK are failing to pay realistic prices to support older and disabled people in their own homes, it's being claimed.
The UK Home Care Association - which represents home care providers - says on average local authorities pay about £14.50 an hour of care.
That's more than £2 less than it claims is needed to cover costs including the new living wage, but councils say they have been left with little choice given the squeeze on their finances.
As a result it says an increasing number of care companies are handing back council contracts.
Colin Angel, from the Home Care Association, has told me just how serious the situation is:

The race is due to be held from Friday 28 April to Sunday 30 April, while the women's race will be held on Saturday 29 April.
This year's event saw two million roadside spectators line the route, with a global TV audience of 11.4 million viewers. It's also thought that it boosted Yorkshire's economy by £60m.
Christian Prudhomme, director of the Tour de France, whose Grand Depart was held in Yorkshire in 2014, says: "The Tour de Yorkshire has done itself proud in building a lasting and hugely successful legacy on the back of the Grand Depart. The race is a true success story."

'Boost' for Tadcaster promised as Tour de Yorkshire comes to town
Tadcaster, hit hard by the Boxing Day floods of 2015, will receive a big boost next year thanks to the Tour de Yorkshire coming to town, it's being promised.
Tadcaster's one of six Yorkshire towns and cities earmarked to host start and finish events during the prestigious cycle race which will be in its third year in 2017.
Repairs are currently continuing on the town's Grade II listed road bridge over the River Wharfe which partially collapsed during the major flooding last December (pictured).

If maths isn't your strong point then Leon Ma will definitely make you jealous...
Leon took his GCSE maths exam this summer. Nothing unusual in that, you may think, but bear in mind he was at still attending Barlby Primary School.
Not content with passing the exam, 11-year-old Leon obtained an A* grade.
On this morning's Breakfast Show on BBC Radio York, Leon's maths teacher at Barlby, Richard Townsend, explained to me how they spotted his talent:
Listen: Selby Women's Institute in pole position?
Joanita Musisi
Reporter, BBC Radio York
Over the last few years, the Women's Institute has attempted to get away from the stereotype of "jam and Jerusalem".
You need look no further than North Yorkshire's very own Calendar Girls for proof of that.
Several new branches of the WI have also sprung up, with a younger age profile and different ideas on what activities they'd like to get involved in.
This morning, I've visited Jenni Marshall and Vikki Harrison from the newly-formed Selby branch of the WI - the Selby Swans.
Jenni told me about some of the more modern and perhaps risque activities suggested by their members:
