  3. 'Fit of temper' baby killer gets life

    A father who threw his crying baby on to the sofa in a fit of temper has been given a life sentence for her murder.

    Two-month-old Daisy Mae Burrill died three days after 31-year-old John Burrill fractured her skull in Fleetwood on 11 March.

    Her injuries were consistent with being gripped by the legs and swung against a hard surface, his trial heard.

    Mr Justice James Goss ordered Burrill to serve a minimum of 18 years in jail.

    Sentencing, the judge at Preston Crown Court described Daisy Mae's murder as the "grossest breach of trust".

    Wartime memorabilia has been stolen from a museum in Bacup.

    A World War One replica rifle with bayonet, ornamental miners' lamps and a collection box were among the collection taken from the Bacup Natural History Society and Museum between 14:30 and 16:00 on Monday.

    Police said the stolen memorabilia was of "low monetary value but immeasurable value" and is a "significant loss to the community".

    A man who admitted murdering his two-month-old daughter after throwing her onto a sofa in a fit of temper has been jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years.

  8. FA should tackle homophobic football fans - Chris Sutton

    Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has criticised Football Association chairman Greg Clarke for warning against gay footballers coming out because of the abuse they may face from fans.

    It follows the results of a BBC Radio 5 live survey which found that 82% of supporters would have no issue with a gay player, but 8% said they would stop watching their team.

    Sutton told Afternoon Edition that Mr Clarke had "taken the easy way out" by being "dictated to by 8% of cavemen".  

    "It's bonkers in our society that people like this can dictate whether someone can come out or not." 

    He added: "This 8% shouldn't be allowed in football grounds. By not taking it on, the 8% are the winners in all of this. Greg Clarke should be taking these people on." 

    Sutton, who won the Premier League title with Blackburn in 1995, called homophobic fans "moronic".

  9. University plans centre to research ageing population issues

    Plans for a £41m centre at Lancaster University to develop solutions to problems caused by ageing populations have been submitted to the council.

    The health innovation centre is to be built next to the university's Bailrigg Campus.

    It could create up to 2,000 jobs and inject about £100m into the local economy, the university said.

    If approved, work is expected to begin in 2017 with the building opening in 2019.

  10. UKIP clash referred to French police

    The clash at the European Parliament earlier this month between UKIP MEPs Steven Woolfe and Mike Hookem has been reported to the French police.

    European Parliament president Martin Schulz said he had referred the "regrettable" incident after a probe.

    The parliament's advisory committee on conduct concluded the two men's account of events "diverged substantially".

    Mr Woolfe was rushed to hospital after collapsing in the parliament later on the day of the incident.

  11. Glasgow woman missing in Blackpool found

    A Glasgow woman who went missing after a night out in Blackpool has been found.  

    Police in Lancashire said Natalie Conway, 32, was "safe and well".

    Ms Conway was last seen at Blackpool nightclub at about 04:00 on Sunday after travelling to the town on Saturday.

    Friends became concerned when she did not contact them or return to Scotland for two days.

  14. NHS chief sacked for gross misconduct

    The chief executive of a hospital trust has been sacked for gross misconduct.

    Jonathan Parry was suspended by Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust on full pay last year following complaints from whistleblowers.

    The trust said a disciplinary hearing reviewed 21 allegations of misconduct and found evidence on 11 counts, seven of which amounted to gross misconduct.

    The nature of the allegations was not disclosed and the trust said Mr Parry could appeal against the decision.

    As the final episode of the last BBC series of The Great British Bake Off looms, BBC News has put together ten of the series' most memorable moments - including Lancashire-born baker John Whaite's culinary crisis in 2012.

  18. Images of man wanted over Blackpool assault released

    Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to about an "unprovoked attack" outside a Blackpool bar.

    A 22-year-old man from Fleetwood suffered minor injuries after being attacked outside the Walkabout Bar on Queen Street about 03:55 on 16 October.

    A man punched the victim in the face, before walking off in the direction of Bar 19 on Queen Street.
