  3. Rape suspect released on bail

    A 44-year-old man who was arrested in connection with reports of a rape in Sheffield in the early hours of Sunday's been released on bail.

    A 25-year-old woman is being supported by police after the incident in a taxi in the Duke Street area.

  4. Watch: Virtual reality helps amputees learn to use new limbs

    A new interactive exhibition using virtual reality to explore the lives of amputees opened at Sheffield Hallam University today.

    Visitors can try the new technology and discover how amputees learn how to use their prosthetics in a virtual kitchen, where users can pick up items such as fizzy drinks and apples, open cupboards, and even smash plates.

  6. The host towns for next year's Tour de Yorkshire have been revealed

    Fox Valley at Stocksbridge will play a starring role in next year's Tour de Yorkshire.

    The six start and finish locations were confirmed today. 

    Tadcaster and Harrogate will also host the race for the first time, along with Bradford. The event, over the last weekend of April, returns to Scarborough and Bridlington.

  7. Yorkshire MEP faces libel bill after European Parliament ruling

    The Yorkshire MEP Jane Collins is facing a bill of hundreds of thousands of pounds, after the European Parliament rejected her claim of immunity from paying libel damages.  

    Jane Collins has described the vote by the European Parliament as “one lost battle in a war of words I’m determined to win.”

    Ms Collins falsely claimed 3 Rotherham Labour MPs were aware of sexual exploitation of girls in the town, but did nothing. 

    The British courts have already ruled that in making the comments she libelled the three MPs.

    Speaking after the vote, Ms Collins said

    Quote Message: Following discussions I believe there are definite grounds for an appeal. It also seems that there may be grounds to challenge the EU itself for failing to uphold its treaty obligations to member states. These areas must be considered.”
  8. Work starts on merged police and fire station in Maltby

    The move to accommodate South Yorkshire Police and Maltby firefighters under one roof is a huge step to reducing costs according to the region's Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings.

    The move will shift fire service resources around a mile closer to the east side of Rotherham, which traditionally accounts for a greater volume of emergency incidents compared to lower risk areas to the east of Maltby.  

  9. Don Valley MP Caroline Flint backs new runway at Heathrow

    MP Caroline Flint has described the decision to progress with a new runway at Heathrow as "good for Doncaster, good for the North and good for Britain".

  10. Listen: Excitement builds in Stocksbridge for Tour de Yorkshire

    Organisers of the Tour de Yorkshire have confirmed the six locations where the stages of the race will start and end next April. They include Fox Valley in Stocksbridge.

    Tony Gibb recently opened Full Gas Cycles in the shopping complex. He told BBC Radio Sheffield, when it comes to cycling, Yorkshire is the place to be:

  12. More progress in Sheffield open air gallery

    Street artists are continuing their transformation of walls across Sheffield. This is Agostino Iacurci's mural taking shape:

    The paintings are part of the 'Year of Making' celebrating craft skills and creativity across Sheffield. 

    They will be complete by Saturday 29 October with a celebratory tour of the trail and an art market being planned for November. Sheffield street artist Phlegm is working on a new mural on Snuff Mill Road just off Ecclesall Road:

  13. UKIP MEP to face prosecution over Rotherham remarks

    A UKIP MEP will be sued for libel over remarks she made about the Rotherham abuse scandal after her attempt to get immunity from prosecution failed.

    Jane Collins, who represents Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, claimed three MPs knew about child exploitation in the town but did nothing to intervene.

    The MPs in question - Sir Kevin Barron, John Healey and Sarah Champion - sued for slander and libel.

    The European Parliament ruled there were no grounds for granting immunity.

  14. Woman dies after hit and run in Thurnscoe

    Two people have been arrested under suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a 36-year-old woman was knocked down by a car in Thurnscoe yesterday evening.

    The woman was walking along Barrowfield Road around 200 yards from the vehicle scrap yard at 19:30 when she was hit by a car which failed to stop. She died later in hospital. 

    A 36-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman are currently in police custody.

  15. Sheffield FC officially applies for UNESCO status

    Olive Grove in Sheffield could become a UNESCO world heritage site.

    Sheffield FC, the world's oldest football club was founded there in 1857. It's been based in Dronfield for the past 15 years.

    The club want to raise £2m to return to Olive Grove and rebuild the original stadium that was the original home to the beautiful game.
