  2. Sexual attack in Canklow – were you in the area?

    Detectives in Rotherham are talking to a 15-year-old girl who has reported being raped by a stranger this morning at around 08:00 in a wooded area off Rother View Road at Canklow.

    He has been described as approximately 40-years old, white with a slight tan, spikey blonde hair and a clean shaven face.

    He is between 5ft 7ins and 5ft 9ins tall and was reported to have been wearing black jogging bottoms, a grey hooded jumper and black, canvas lace up shoes with a white sole.

    Detective Inspector John Fitzgibbons is investigating:

    Quote Message: The girl is currently with her family and specially trained officers who are providing support. Additional police patrols have been provided throughout the day and will continue."

  4. Sheffield University's Vice Chancellor 'ashamed' at Prime Minister's attitude to Indian students

    University of Sheffield vice-chancellor Sir Keith Burnett joined UK prime minister Theresa May on her recent trade visit to India. In this blog, he reflects critically on Ms May’s claims that the visit was a success.

    He writes that other countries are rubbing their hands with glee at our stupidity:

    Quote Message: Ms May is announcing that her trade mission to Europe has seen £1 billion in deals announced for the UK. But remember that international students are worth £14 billion to the UK economy every year. That’s equivalent to more than one major trade mission a month. I will work to build collaborations with Indian universities and companies. I feel truly ashamed. But I must beg, and I do beg. Please listen to India before it is too late."

  6. Have you seen Steven

    Police are growing concerned for missing Barnsley man Steven Jackson who was last seen over 48-hours ago.

    Fifty-year-old Steven was reported missing this morning however was last seen at around 09:15 on Saturday 12 November in the Wombwell area of Barnsley.

    Please call police on 101 quoting incident number 280 of 14 November 2016.  

  7. MP John Mann calls for fuel duty reduction

    Bassetlaw MP John Mann has written to the Chancellor Philip Hammond calling on him to make an immediate cut of 10p in the rate of fuel duty in his Autumn Statement.

    In his letter John Mann noted that the previous Chancellor George Osborne added £5 to the cost of a full tank.

  9. Listen: Gale on new role as Yorkshire first-team coach

    Andrew Gale says he didn't feel it would work to become First Team coach of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and carry on playing. The 32-year-old has hung up his bat to succeed Jason Gillespie, signing a three year deal. And Gale says he wants to fully focus on his new role:

  11. Police relieved at sentencing for baby death couple

    Police have welcomed a 12-year jail sentence for a man who killed a baby in Doncaster, the baby's mother was sentenced to 18 months.

    26 yr old James Larkin killed his partner's child by shaking him violently. He was convicted of manslaughter. His girlfriend, 21 yr old Laura Ostle, was found guilty of conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

    Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Dave Stopford thanked the jury:

    Quote Message: This has been a lengthy and upsetting investigation for all concerned and I repeat my thanks to the members of the jury, who had to sit through weeks of distressing medical evidence and to the officers in this case, who have worked tirelessly to get justice for the young victim.”

  14. Doncaster baby shaking death: James Larkin jailed for 12 years

    A man who violently shook an 11-and-a-half week old baby has been jailed for 12 years

    The youngster died in hospital in September 2014 after suffering injuries consistent with being shaken or impacting very heavily with something like a mattress.

    The child's mum Laura Ostle, 21, has been sentenced to 18 months for conspiring to pervert to course of justice.

  15. Sport: Andrew Gale appointed new Yorkshire Cricket coach

    Yorkshire County Cricket Club has named club captain Andrew Gale as their new Head Coach.

    Gale had a great career as a player, leading Yorkshire to back-to-back County Championships and coming close to a third in 2016. 

    His long term positon in the team was less secure though and a switch to coaching as he approaches his 33rd birthday makes sense. 

    He takes over from the very successful and popular Jason Gillespie. Gale's first job is to find a replacement club captain. Gary Ballance, recently dropped by England, could be the man for the job.
