  8. Teenage boy arrested after man suffers 'life-changing' injuries

    A teenage boy has been arrested after a man suffered 'life-changing' injuries to his eye. 

    Police are investigating an assault in Bournemouth in September where a man was walking with three men through the Lower Gardens near Exeter Road and were approached by a group of teenagers.

    One of the group allegedly struck the victim with a studded belt which was wrapped around his fist.

    The victim, aged in his 30s, sustained life-changing injuries to his right eye. 

    A 16-year-old boy from Christchurch has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and bailed until the middle of January 2017.

    The fees paid to acts at the Isle of Wight Festival "have increased dramatically" since the Brexit vote, organiser John Giddings has said.

  11. Study 'reveals most dangerous rip currents'

    Researchers in Southampton and Plymouth say rip currents are often more dangerous where there are no waves breaking across the rip channel.

    The study found that so-called "open rips" sent drifters further out to sea, and were twice as likely to feature in RNLI rescue statistics as "closed rips".

    Associate Professor Ivan Haigh, from the University of Southampton, said they were "a much greater hazard to swimmers."  

  12. Single-parent families hit by benefits cap

    A cut in the benefits cap - a limit on the income working age households can receive in certain benefits - has come into force.

    The cap has been reduced from £26,000 a year to £20,000 a year, outside Greater London.

    Government figures show that in Southampton, one of the most-capped areas, 72 single-parent families were under the benefit cap in August.

    Single mothers and fathers make up two-thirds of capped households, according to the Department for Work and Pensions.

  13. Man critically injured in bridge fall

    A man is in a "life-threatening" condition after apparently falling from a road bridge in Basingstoke.

    Police were called to Ringway West near Worting Road bridge at 12:51 GMT.

    The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

    In September, a pedestrian was critically injured when he was pushed off the bridge onto the road below as the result of a traffic accident.

  14. Beach carcass is 'harbour porpoise'

    A dead marine mammal found washed up on Compton Beach has been identified as a harbour porpoise, by the charity Whale and Dolphin Conservation.

    Porpoises are the most commonly-stranded cetaceans in the UK, with the latest figures showing 336 were reported in 2014.

    Common causes of death include attack by bottlenose dolphins, entanglement in fishing gear and disease.

    Mark Hitchcock, who found the 4ft-long (1.2m) carcass on Sunday, said it was undamaged.

  15. WATCH: Holiday park fire destroys caravan

    The blaze completely destroyed the static caravan at the Parkdean Holiday Park on Hayling Island on Sunday night.

    One man was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of inhaling smoke but his condition is unknown.
