  16. Cancer lie fraudster 'created elaborate image as SAS hero'

A former military clerk from Leeds who lied about having cancer to swindle victims out of money and services created "an elaborate image of himself as a battle-scarred SAS hero", according to West Yorkshire Police.

    Simon Buckden wearing military medals

Simon Buckden, 44, got more than £7,500 in money and services after pretending to have rectal cancer. He claimed to have served in the SAS and seen active duty in Bosnia and both Gulf Wars.

He's been jailed for 16 months at Leeds Crown Court after having pleaded guilty to six counts of fraud midway through his trial.

Det Ch Insp Mark Swift, who led the investigation, said: "He lied repeatedly, not only to those closest to him but to genuine survivors of trauma and also to the media and the wider public through the extensive publicity he sought to satisfy his own self-importance.

"He seems to have revelled in the sympathy and status that those lies afforded him. The monetary gains he made from this deception were not particularly significant but the sense of betrayal his victims and others have felt has been enormous."
