  5. Watch: Protesters moved as fracking equipment arrives

    Two arrests have been made today as specialist equipment has started arriving at a shale gas fracking site in North Yorkshire.

    Third Energy was granted planning permission for the fracking site at Kirby Misperton in May 2016 - about 60 protesters gathered at the entrance. Two men, 33 and 69, were arrested for obstruction.

    As a crane approached the site, it faced a delay as protesters were moved out of the way:

  6. Man appears in court accused of 1972 Deepcar sex attack

    A man accused of raping and kidnapping an 18-year-old woman more than 40 years ago has appeared in court.

    Peter Pickering, 79, is charged with the rape and false imprisonment of the woman in Deepcar, near Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire, in 1972.

    Justice

    He appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court via video link earlier, speaking only to confirm his name and date of birth.

    Mr Pickering, of Newbury, Berkshire, was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Crown Court on 16 October.

    He was charged in August following a review of cold cases by West Yorkshire Police.

  8. Police seek witnesses after officer attacked in Doncaster

    A police officer is recovering in hospital this eveining with serious head injuries after an attack in Doncaster this morning - police are appealing for witnesses.

    Attack

    It happened in Hexthorpe at about 07:30 when a black Fiat Punto crashed into a wall on Cleveland Street, and three people who were in the car ran off.

    Police went to the scene and chased the occupants of the car to a house on Cherry Tree Road, where in the garden an "incident" occured, leaving a 45-year-old officer with serious head injuries.

    He was taken to hospital and his condition is now described as stable and not life threatening. Now witnesses are being sought.

    Three people, a woman and two men, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault offences. All three are still in custody.

  9. Laughton man 'killed in sustained assault at home'

    Three masked men beat a drug addict to death in his own home in a "sustained physical assault", a court has heard.

    Barry Plant, 36, and brothers Nathan and Ashley Fensome, 28 and 21, are accused of murdering Steven Fretwell, 47, in Laughton, Rotherham, in 2016.

    It is alleged they climbed through a window at Mr Fretwell's ground-floor flat in Kingswood Avenue in the early hours of 18 December before they punched, kicked and stamped on him.

    Mr Plant, of Sandymount Road, Wath-Upon-Dearne, and the Fensome brothers, both of Barleycroft Lane, Dinnington, deny murder.

    The trial continues.

    The Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Vince Cable says the party is proud of former Sheffield MP and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg.

    Sir Vince praised him during his speech to the party conference in Bournemouth.

  11. Kirby Misperton fracking: Protesters arrested as equipment arrives

    Specialist equipment has started arriving at a shale gas fracking site in North Yorkshire amid protests and arrests.

    Third Energy was granted planning permission for the fracking site at Kirby Misperton in May 2016.

    About 60 protesters gathered at the entrance. Two men, aged 33 and 69, were arrested for obstruction.

    The company has not received final consent to begin fracking but expects to start before the end of the year.

  12. 'Professor of swords' dream job for boy

    A 12-year-old boy's hopes of becoming a "professor of swords" might have moved a step closer to reality after he wrote to a museum about his dream career.

    He sent a letter to research assistant Helen Ritchie after visiting Cambridge's Fitzwilliam Museum.

    "I would really like your advice please about how I could become a professor of swords," the boy wrote. His tweeted letter prompted a reply from Leeds Royal Armouries which said it would be happy to help.

    Laura Bell, head of collections at the Royal Armouries in Leeds and the Tower of London, wrote: "Amazing! This young genius definitely has something @Royal_Armouries happy to help too."
