  6. Leonard Cohen 1934-2016: His visits to Leeds

Tributes are being paid to Canadian singer, songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen who has died aged 82.

    Leonard Cohen

He has played two big gigs here in Leeds over the years, the first back in 1970. It was captured by John Rettie who was studying at the University of Leeds at the time.

He now lives in America, but at the time he was a budding young photographer and he managed to get some great shots, including this one from the stage looking into the refectory:

And the review of the gig makes for interesting reading:

Cohen enjoyed a long and critically acclaimed time in the spotlight as a musician, but in 1996 he effectively retired as a musician to become a Buddhist monk.

But ten years later at the age of 73, he had to hit the road again when he discovered that his manager had embezzled more than $5m from his account.

This lead to a marathon concert tour and eventually a new album in 2012. Again, he toured his new album and he came to Leeds once more a year after that. Here he is on stage at the arena.
