Conor McGregor has had to give up his featherweight title. Here's why

UFC's first dual division champion Conor McGregor has had to relinquish his featherweight belt. It will now be awarded to previous champion Jose Aldo, who McGregor famously beat for the title in a bout that lasted just 13 seconds at UFC 194.

So why has this happened? Well hold on, this is about to get confusing...

Light-heaveyweight champion Daniel Cormier was due to fight Anthony Johnson on December 10 at UFC 206, however he had to withdraw from the fight due to injury.

So that a title bout can still go ahead on the day, officials asked McGregor to relinquish the belt which would allow Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis to take to the Octogon and fight it out for the interim UFC featherweight championship.

The winner of this fight will then face Brazilian fighter Aldo, in 2017 for the unified belt.
