James McCarthy is available for Everton's home clash with Manchester United after recovering from hamstring trouble. Muhamed Besic and Matthew Pennington are long-term absentees.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is suspended after receiving his fifth booking of the season in the midweek EFL Cup win over West Ham. Luke Shaw is a doubt after limping off in that tie, while Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling remain sidelined.

Bournemouth midfielder Andrew Surman won't be available after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury. However, Artur Boruc and Charlie Daniels could both return after respective back and hip problems.

Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has returned to training after a groin injury and could be involved. Philippe Coutinho will be out for five weeks with an ankle problem, while Daniel Sturridge is also out, but Roberto Firmino may feature.

Tomorrow sees the latest El Clasico in Spain as Barcelona entertain Real Madrid at the Nou Camp.

Ronaldinho, who won the Champions League once and La Liga twice with Barca, hopes his former club comes out on top.

There will be a live text commentary on the BBC Sport website of the match.

There is also a full round of matches in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday, beginning with leaders Celtic, who play away at Motherwell in the early kick-off (12:15 GMT).

Why are there not the great strike partnerships in the modern game? We asked Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, who both helped Blackburn win the Premier League title in 1995.

"With more sides playing a three-man attack, you do see fewer partnerships than we maybe saw when I was playing with Chris at Blackburn, Les Ferdinand at Newcastle or Teddy Sheringham with England," said Shearer.

"But in all those sides it wasn't a case of playing two out-and-out strikers - we were always able to drop in and help the midfield when we didn't have the ball."

Sutton added: "If Alan and I were playing together in the Premier League now, we could have done some damage and I will tell you why.

"As he says, people would say we played a 4-4-2 the season we won the title but actually, out of possession, one of us would drop on to their holding midfielder.

"The game has not been reinvented - you can still play with two strikers. It is no big deal, just about players being adaptable."

West Ham will be without top scorer Michail Antonio and defender Aaron Cresswell after both suffered groin injuries in the midweek EFL Cup defeat to Manchester United. Diafra Sakho is also out but Andy Carroll is back from a knee problem and the fit-again Arthur Masuaku could start his first game since September.

Arsenal will be without Mathieu Debuchy, who will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury. Striker Olivier Giroud is doubtful with a groin problem and midfielder Santi Cazorla faces three months out after ankle surgery.

West Brom could be without Salomon Rondon, who was sent home from training on Thursday with tonsilitis. Saido Berahino is still working on regaining match fitness, while back-up goalkeeper Boaz Myhill remains out with an ankle problem.

Watford have several injury worries, with defender Younes Kaboul, midfielder Ben Watson and striker Isaac Success all facing fitness tests. Defender Miguel Britos and midfielder Valon Behrami are both serving bans.

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld could make his return after nine matches out with a knee injury. Danny Rose is available again after suspension but Ben Davies (ankle) and Erik Lamela (hip) remain out of action.

Swansea captain Leon Britton could be back in contention after missing the last two games with a calf problem. However, midfielder Ki Sung-yueng is still sidelined with the broken toe that caused him to miss last week's win over Crystal Palace.

Alan Shearer knows a thing or two about putting the ball in the back of the net. Last season Jamie Vardy scored 24 league goals, second only to Harry Kane of Spurs, but this term he has only managed two to date and he hasn't hit the net for the Foxes since September.

"Vardy's confidence must have taken a battering in the last few weeks," Shearer says.

"Last season every time he touched the ball, he seemed to score. Last weekend he didn't even have a shot. But there is only so long you can blame a lack of confidence - only he can put it right.

"Last season he was aggressive in his running, stretched teams and ran in behind defences. We just haven't seen enough of that from him this season."

Chris Sutton, who helped Blackburn to the Premier League title in the mid-90s, expects reigning Premier League champions Leicester to improve on their current position of 14th.

He said: "Like Leicester, we made a poor start to our title defence but we turned it around and eventually finished seventh.

"I think Claudio Ranieri's side have too much quality to go down, but it would be particularly damaging if they were to lose again on Saturday.

"Sunderland are still not very convincing going forward but they have got a bit of spirit and fight about them and their players and fans will think they have got a real chance of winning this game."

Sunderland defender Papy Djilobodji is available after suspension and could replace John O'Shea. Lynden Gooch is likely to be sidelined by an ankle problem but Jan Kirchhoff may return after a two-month absence with a hamstring injury.

Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy could return from the ankle injury that has kept him out since August. Ben Chilwell is also fit but Danny Drinkwater remains suspended and Kasper Schmeichel is out with a broken hand.

Stoke could be without captain Ryan Shawcross for a second successive game as he is doubtful with the calf injury which ruled him out last weekend. Glenn Whelan should recover in time from a similar problem, while Joe Allen is available after a one-match ban.

Burnley keeper Tom Heaton is "touch and go" to return from the calf injury that kept him out against Manchester City. Dean Marney is expected to recover from a back problem, but Johann Berg Gudmundsson is injured.

Crystal Palace are without forward Connor Wickham, who is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage. Goalkeeper Steve Mandanda is out for up to six weeks following knee surgery, while midfielder Yohan Cabaye is banned after accumulating five yellow cards.

Dusan Tadic remains out for Southampton with a broken nose, while Matt Targett is sidelined by a hamstring problem. Saintsare set to recall captain Jose Fonte and top scorer Charlie Austin who were both rested in Wednesday's EFL Cup win away to Arsenal. Southampton are currently 10th in the league, but are only three points behind Manchester United in sixth.

Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton has given his views on the battle between Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa of Chelsea.

"If I was picking one of them, I would still go with Aguero but Costa is back to his best after being written off by many last season," said Sutton.

"Costa leads the line so well, always brings other players into the game and has got his hunger and sharpness back, but Aguero on his day is still the outstanding striker in the Premier League.

"In terms of the game, I just have a feeling City will nick it. If City's attacking players click, even Conte will not be able to keep them out."

Manchester City remain without the injured Vincent Kompany but otherwise have a fully fit squad, with Fabian Delph back after a groin problem. Kevin de Bruyne, John Stones, David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan could earn recalls to the starting line-up.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte will check on the fitness of one or two unnamed players before naming his side. Conte, who remains without John Terry, has selected the same starting XI in the last six league games.

Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, Blackburn's famous "SAS" partnership from the 1990s, will team up again on Match of the Day this weekend and they have been giving their views on a number of issues from the football world.

Regarding the big game between Manchester City and Chelsea this weekend, Shearer says: "Chelsea have looked solid and dominated sides since they switched to playing three at the back at the start of their winning run.

"But if there is a game where I would expect City to get it right and raise their levels it would be in a fixture like this one.

"Both sides have come into it fresh with no midweek fixtures and it is a mouth-watering prospect to see City's Sergio Aguero and Chelsea's Diego Costa, two of the best forwards in the league, going head-to-head."
