The apparently unremarkable painting was found hanging in Holy Trinity in Bradford-on-Avon in 2006 and identified as Quentin Metsys' Christ Blessing.

Given to the church in 1940 by a couple from the nearby village of Holt, the small oil was sold a couple of years ago for about £1.5m.

The church has now reopened after the year-long revamp.

  13. Could jailed marine have murder conviction quashed?

    Jonathan Beale

    BBC defence correspondent

    Alexander Blackman

This decision means there is now the possibility that Alexander Blackman (pictured) could have his conviction quashed.

Three years ago he was found guilty by a military court of murdering a wounded Taliban prisoner.

The incident, which took place on a tour of Helmand in 2011, was unwittingly filmed by a fellow marine on a helmet camera.

It recorded Blackman firing his pistol and then telling his men he'd just broken the Geneva convention.

The Daily Mail has led a high profile campaign raising funds to have his case re-opened. The commission found there was new evidence relating to Blackman's mental state at the time and questions why he was not given the opportunity to make an alternative plea of manslaughter.

At his original trial Blackman pleaded not guilty to murder - he said he thought his prisoner was already dead when he fired the shot.

The appeal court will now reconsider the case.
