  8. Community church is cooking with gas

Do you remember our story earlier this week, about the Christmas dinner cooker crisis facing a community church?

It had a happy ending, following an appeal on BBC Radio Norfolk, when retailer John Lewis stepped in with the offer of two new cookers.

They've now been installed, and are up and running, at the Alive House church on Nelson Street in Norwich.

Their community cafe serves 2,000 hot breakfasts a year, and will be providing meals over Christmas.

  9. Lifeboat launched after dog went into the sea 'chasing seals'

Happisburgh lifeboat crew sprang into action when their pagers went off yesterday afternoon.

Shortly before 14:00, the Coastguard told them of a dog and its owner in the sea at Sea Palling.

The Spirit of Berkhamsted was launched, with a crew of two, arriving at the scene within 15 minutes, and the search began.

A large number of seals have been seen in the area, and it's believed the dog had gone into the sea after them.

Luckily the owner and dog had both made it out of the sea, wet and cold. They were checked over by the crew, and Coastguard Rescue team, and given advice.

Happisburgh lifeboat then returned to station, in readiness for the next call.

  11. New power station for King's Lynn

    Richard Bond

    BBC Look East business correspondent

The energy giant Centrica is to build a new gas power station in King's Lynn on the site of the former one.

That was 20 years old (pictured), and closed four years ago because it was no longer efficient, with the loss of 28 jobs.

The company says the new power station will be flexible... in other words it will either be kept on all the time, or switched on and off, to fit in with peaks and troughs in production of power from renewable sources, such as wind and solar.

The plant will be capable of generating enough power for 370,000 homes.

Building will start in the spring, with completion in 2019. Once operational, it's expected to create more than 30 jobs.

Centrica has had planning permission to build a new power station in Lynn ever since the old one closed, but said it had delayed investment because of high gas prices and uncertainty in the energy market.

  12. Balls' Gangnam dance a challenge for Strictly singers

    Caroline Kingdon

    BBC Local Live

This year's Strictly Come Dancing on BBC TV is the best ever, say the stage singers.

But it's not been without its challenges for the four band members, who perform live versions of the songs the contestants dance to on every show.

Tommy Blaize says the music and dancing have made it the best Strictly so far, "so it's not really a chore".

But speaking of having to learn how to sing "Gangnam Style" for Norwich boy Ed Balls and Katya Jones Salsa, he said he "had to turn the page around on stage to work out the lyrics".

Any excuse to show the dance again!

It's semi-final night this Saturday on BBC One at 18:50.

  13. Green councillor joins Tories citing 'increasingly left-wing ideology'

    Andrew Sinclair

    BBC Look East political correspondent

A Green councillor on Norfolk County Council has defected to the Conservatives - strengthening their control of the authority.

Councillor Adrian Dearnley, who represents Thorpe Hamlet in Norwich, has been known to be unhappy with the Greens for a while and was a supporter of the Leave campaign in the EU referendum.

In a statement he said: "I have for some time struggled with the direction [the Greens] have taken, seemingly unable to separate environmental issues from an increasingly left-wing political ideology."

    Councillor Adrian Dearnley

The Green Party says it is "appalled" by Mr Dearnley's decision and it's accused him of betraying his colleagues.

In a statement the party said: "We are shocked that Councillor Dearnley would choose to throw in his lot with the Conservative Party, which over the last six years has overseen the systematic destruction of local government and the welfare system and left British people poorer and more divided."

Councillor Dearnley will sit with the Conservatives for the first time at Monday's meeting of the full council.

He is not planning to stand for re-election in next May's elections.

The political make-up of the council is now:

    • Conservatives - 42 members
    • Labour - 14
    • UKIP and independents - 13
    • Liberal Democrats - 10
    • Green - 3
    • Non-aligned - 2

  16. Thanks for helping the BBC Children in Need appeal

    Wally Webb

    BBC Radio Norfolk

Over the years they've raised thousands of pounds for charity, including £60,000 for the BBC Children in Need appeal.

But 30 years of fund-raising is coming to an end, because Harleston Lions can't find any new members.

The Children in Need appeal was their very first project... and it was their last, and today I popped down to present Lions Les Bicker and Val Tolhurst with a certificate to commemorate the effort they've put in over the years.
