  1. Five things we learned today from Yorkshire

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live

That's it from me for today - and, indeed, for this year. We'll be back on Tuesday 3 January with the latest news, sport, weather and travel updates from across the county.

Meanwhile, here are five things we learned in Yorkshire today:

I'll leave you for now with a little collage of beautiful weather pics from around the region.

From left to right, thanks go to Mark Rothwell for his sunset in Keighley over Redcar Tarn, to Jonathan Knight for jet trails over Scarborough Castle and to Skalamang, for the golden tranquility of the River Don, near Doncaster.

  2. York chocolate giant gives two-fingered salute to three-fingered Kit Kat

    Nick Morris

    BBC Radio York

Britain's chocolate lovers are being reassured the controversial shrinking of one of the country's most popular chocolate bars wont be repeated with York's world-famous, four-fingered snack.

The makers of Toblerone caused an outcry last month by pushing their famous "alps" further apart to reduce its weight by 40g.

    Nestle

The firm blamed a drop in the pound's value leading to a rise in the price of foods like cocoa and coffee, but denied June's Brexit vote was to blame.

Now the boss of Nestle, one of York's largest employers, has confirmed it's also struggling to keep costs down.

However, chief executive Dame Fiona Kendrick, has told the BBC price increases will not be passed on to customers for as long as possible and the firm will "never produce a three-fingered Kit Kat" while she remains in her post.

  3. Leeds boxing champion Nicola Adams on the fight for equality in sport

    Yorkshire Post

Olympic boxing champion Nicola Adams hopes her success and popularity has helped to advance equality for women in the sport.

The Leeds-born fighter also said she was strongly considering turning professional to emulate her hero Muhammad Ali when she was interviewed as a guest editor on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Flask end has been named a regional finalist in the Countryside Alliance Awards - known as the Rural Oscars.

It's the second time the shop's reached the final in the best village shop and post office category.

  5. Listen: York Mosque donates survival kits to city's rough sleepers

    Andrew Barton

    BBC Local Live

Some of York's rough sleepers will hopefully be a little less troubled by the cold after members of York Mosque raised over £600 to provide cold survival kits.

The kits include a hat, scarf, gloves and a sleeping bag which doubles as a coat.

Members of the mosque have joined together with the Salvation Army in York to distribute the kits to those in need.

Mebs Surve, from the Mosque, says it's one of a number of collaborations they're involved in across the city:

  8. Push to improve York recycling after £11m Landfill Tax bill

    Sarah Urwin

    Political Reporter, BBC Radio York

City of York Council has paid out more than £11m to the government for landfill tax in just three years, figures show.

    reycling bin

As a result there's a big push for more recycling in the city, with only about 40% of its waste currently recycled.

The authority says it's spent more than its budget for waste services and has been using money from other areas to prop this up.

It's now looking to make savings of £400,000 each year from its waste budget, or face losing other services.

This means changes to recycling in the city, including changes to the day recycling is collected at about a third of homes in York.

In addition, a glass collection service will be made available to 800 homes previously without the service and there'll be new vehicles to help keep plastic, paper and glass separate.

Quote Message: Improving recycling levels will reduce landfill tax and will work with campaigns across the whole city to encourage a higher recycling rate." from Andrew Waller City of York Councillor

The move would help make roads in Britain safer, according to Mr Jones.

The lessons will not be mandatory and driving instructors will decide when their students are ready.

The proposal is one of a number of ideas being considered by ministers as part of a £2m research programme by the Department for Transport into improving safety for new drivers.

  14. 'Targeted' shooting in Bradford caught on camera

A CCTV image of the moment shots were fired at a police car in Bradford in the early hours of Christmas Day in what police describe as a "targeted" attack has been issued.

    Shooting

Two shots were fired at a police officer and a member of the public in a marked police car as officers attended a disturbance outside the Krizma nightclub in Sackville Street at about 04:20.

The shots were fired from what's believed to be a black Seat Leon which was later found burnt out in Low Green Terrace, Great Horton.

A 21-year-old man was arrested this morning on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody, police say. Two men are still being sought in connection with the incident.

Det Supt Pat Twiggs says: "We are releasing this image in the hope someone knows who was involved in this offence, recognises the vehicle involved or knows who may have been in it.

"This was clearly a targeted, highly dangerous act which could have easily resulted in fatal consequences and we are determined to bring those responsible to justice," he adds.

  15. Talks continue to save Bradford Bulls

    BBC Sport

Talks continue today to try and save the Bradford Bulls as their administration enters its 47th day.

The Rugby Football League revealed a consortium was considering a formal bid for the financially-troubled Bulls, with a sale expected after Christmas.

    Bulls

An official offer, tabled before Christmas, was rejected yesterday, though another bidder is thought to have come forward.

At the same time, the club's playing squad and staff are due their December wages today.

Bradford, who were last in Super League back in 2014, entered administration on 14 November.

  16. Watch: A dog's for life - not just for Christmas

    Jericho Keys

    Reporter, BBC Radio York

The advertising slogan used to go "a dog is for life, not just for Christmas", and historically this time of year is a busy one for the RSPCA.

That's partly down to the number of unwanted pets given as Christmas presents.

I've been down at the RSPCA's base in York this morning, where I met Riley the dog and animal welfare supervisor, Marie Sandall.

Sadly, Marie told me some people abandon their elderly pets so they can buy a new one for Christmas. This is what she had to say:
