  2. Neighbours shocked at death of woman in Greece 'dog attack'

    A woman from Wiltshire is believed to have been killed in Greece by a pack of stray dogs.

    Celia Hollingworth, 64, was reported missing from her accommodation on Thursday.

    She was in the northern part of the country in a town called Maroneia and had been visiting a nearby archaeological site.

    Her neighbours in Bradford-on-Avon spoke of their shock on hearing the news.

  3. Bristol Bloodhound arrives in Cornwall for speed tests

    The British attempt to beat the world land speed record has come a step closer with the arrival of the Bloodhound Supersonic car in Cornwall for its first ever test runs at Newquay airport.

    The Bristol-built car will be driven at what the team call low speed - 200mph - at the end of October.

    Before that there will be several weeks of static tests.

  4. Rail pledge electrifies Labour conference

    A Labour government would electrify the Great Western railway line all the way through Bristol and Somerset and down on to Cornwall.

    The shadow chancellor made the pledge at today's party conference to cheers from activists - many of them from the West Country.

    A Somerset council is asking people living in Woolaway houses what they want to happen to them.

    Woolaway homes are prefabricated concrete houses built in the 1950s.

  7. Neighbour's tribute to woman killed in Greece 'dog attack'

    Tributes are being paid to retired university worker Celia Hollingworth who has died after a "dog attack" in Greece

    Her neighbours in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, have spoken of their shock.

    Andrew Otto, who lives opposite her, said: "Of all the people here she was the one who was going out of her way to make friends. She was a lovely person, really."

    A spokeswoman for Bath Against Cuts, one of the campaign groups Ms Hollingworth was involved in, said it was "very sad news".

    "She was always optimistic and spent time talking to people about the issues affecting their lives and more often than not giving them courage to fight back," she said

  9. Cabbies call for Uber to be withdrawn in Bristol

    The taxi-call app Uber has defended the safety of its service in Bristol and Bath following calls for the cities to follow London's lead by withdrawing their licence.

    Transport for London (TfL) made the announcement on Friday, citing "public safety concerns".

    Now the Hackney Carriage Taxi Drivers of Bristol want tougher safety checks on Uber drivers, or a ban.

    Uber says its drivers go through the same enhanced checks as other cab drivers.

  10. Woman 'killed by dogs while walking along coastal path' in Greece

    A Wiltshire woman has died in northern Greece having apparently been attacked by a pack of stray dogs.

    Celia Hollingworth was reported missing on Thursday after visiting an archaeological site near Maroneia.

    Reports say the 64-year-old, from Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, used her phone to try to contact relatives in the UK while she was being attacked.

    The recently retired University of Bristol staff member took a taxi to a local archaeological site on Thursday, according to Greek police.

    It is thought she tried to walk back along a coastal path when she was attacked by dogs. Her body was found on Friday.

    A spokesman for the Foreign Office said it was in contact with Greek police and "was also providing consular assistance to her family".

  11. Man arrested in connection with weekend stabbing

    A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing near Bath at the weekend, police have said.

    The attack happened in an alleyway between Sunnyside View and Bath Road, in Peasedown St John, on Saturday at about 11:35pm.

    The victim - a 52-year-old man - was taken to hospital but police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

    Avon and Somerset Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them.

  12. Uni bans research into gender reassignment reversal

    A researcher at Bath Spa University says he has been prevented from carrying out research into why some people who have gender reassignment treatment, or surgery, change their minds.

    James Caspian wanted to investigate the reasons why life-changing decisions by transgender individuals -to change their physical appearance and gender - was later reversed in some cases.

    Mr Caspain, who is a psychotherapist, says the university refused his proposal because "it was politically incorrect."

    The university says it is investigating his claims.
