  2. Man jailed over illegal gun in Sheffield

    After a shooting in Sheffield a 54-year-old man has been jailed for nearly three years for possessing a firearm. 

    Michael Burke (below), of Wragg Road in Sheffield pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm while banned at an earlier hearing. 

    He has been jailed for 33 months.

    Two other defendants, Martyn Sedgwick and Lee Wolf, were jailed for seven years each earlier this month for their roles in the shooting outside a convenience store in Nodder Road.  

  3. Leonne Weeks death: Extra time for police to question man

    Police have been given extra time to question a man about the death of 16-year-old Leonne Weeks.

    Detectives have a further 24 hours to speak to the 18-year-old who was arrested on suspicion of murder on Monday. 

    A 26-year-old woman arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of assisting an offender, has been bailed.

    The teenager's body was found in Dinnington, Rotherham, on Monday at about 11:00 GMT.

  5. Halifax fatal attack victim named by police

    A man who died after being attacked in Ovenden, near Halifax, yesterday has been named by police.

    Darren Moorhouse, 49, died after being attacked at Athol Close, off Athol Road.

    Two men and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

    Officers are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

  6. More major concerts for Scarborough's open air theatre

    It's Europe's biggest theatre of its kind, and now there'll be more chances for peoole to enjoy shows at Scarborough's open air theatre.

    The borough council's planning committee has voted today favour of increasing the number of shows at the venue from 12 to 30.

    The theatre can hold an audience of 6,500.

  7. Sheffield bin contracts in doubt

    If you live in Sheffield and like the day you put your bin out, bad news, the council could be changing it.

    Sheffield City Council says it wants to end the contract with Veolia which was due to finish in 2036. 

    From April next year the council says it wants to separate out the different services and give them to different providers, to run for shorter periods of time. 

    They say it's because they need to save money.  

  8. Bravery in face of adversity action is honoured

    A man who showed "great bravery in forcing a gunman to flee" has been honoured for his actions.

    Daniel Brassett went into a convenience store to do a bit of shopping; he ended up tackling a man with a gun who was attacking the shopkeeper.

    Police say Mr Brassett showed great bravery in forcing the gunman to flee from the Majeed convenience store on Adwick Road in Doncaster.

  9. North Yorkshire 'safest place in England'

    With a crime rate of 46 incidents per 1,000 of the population, nowhere is safer, at least statistically, in England than North Yorkshire.

    The data comes from the "Crime Statistics for England and Wales, year ending September 2016" bulletin published by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

    That said violent crime has gone up, as have sex offences and theft.

    Overall, North Yorkshire has seen a crime rate rise of 5% on last year, even so other areas are worse off for crime overall.

  10. Assurance given on Tadcaster bridge opening

    The man in charge of rebuilding work on Tadcaster's flood-damaged bridge says it will reopen by the end of this month.

    Work was due to be completed by 27 January - but recent bad weather had cast doubt over whether it would reopen on time. 

    The bridge partly collapsed more than a year ago in the floods.

  11. Police warned of flooding danger on night young Sheffield man crashed and died

    A young Sheffield man crashed and died on a waterlogged road shortly after police had been warned about the 'horrendous' conditions, an inquest heard.

  12. Protests planned on Donald Trump's inauguration day

    Tomorrow Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th US President and there are protests planned across West and South Yorkshire.

    Among the number of protests planned in Yorkshire, one of them is organised by Youth Fight for Jobs in Leeds. 

    They say that they'll also be behind protests in Huddersfield, Bradford, York, Doncaster, Sheffield and Shipley.

  13. North Yorkshire farmers seeking charity's help

    A charity says it has paid out more to North Yorkshire farmers struggling to make ends meet than anywhere else in England and Wales. 

    The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution says it has seen a 25% rise year-on-year in the amount given to farmers in the county.

    It's a problem for farmers who blame long delays in the government paying out EU grants. 

    Another difficulty comes when customers are slow to pay.

  14. Rotherham firm facing big bill over pay failings

    A company that breached pay laws is facing a bill of £425,000.

    Kostal UK Ltd has been judged at an employment tribunal to owe 56 members of the union UNITE up to £7,600.

    The ruling comes after bosses tried to bypass the workers' union and put a pay offer directly to individuals which included changes to their terms of employment, says UNITE.
