  4. Appleby councillor says town should seize A66 opportunities

    A councillor from Appleby says government plans to dual the whole length of the A66 from Scotch Corner to Penrith will give the town opportunities to strengthen its economy.

     Eden Council is asking people living in the towns along the A66 how they believe they could benefit from the plan, announced by ministers last year.

     Andy Connell, a member of Appleby Town Council, told BBC Radio Cumbria that the area has missed out in the past: 

    "Appleby is a historic town and part of its pitch is an appeal to tourists, but part of its pitch must also be as a vibrant economic centre that provides opportunity and is successful from a business point of view," he said.

  5. Unions to meet minister in nuclear pensions row

    Union officials representing thousands of workers at Sellafield and other nuclear installations will meet the the energy minister Jesse Norman tomorrow to try to get him to intervene in a row over pensions that could lead to a strike.

    The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority says it's government policy that public sector pensions should be reformed by 2018, and its plans would save £660m.

    But trade unions say there have been significant problems with the way the NDA has consulted the workforce on the proposals, and the process should be suspended.

  6. Tory chairman and Labour MP in Copeland roads investment spat

    The Tory party chairman Patrick Mcloughlin (pictured, left) has been campaigning in Copeland today, and sparked the sharpest exchange of the by-election so far.

    Asked about the state of the A595, Mr McLoughlin, a former transport minister, said he "didn't recall" the previous MP, Jamie Reed, lobbying him for improvements to it.

    The Workington Labour MP Sue Hayman said Mr McLoughlin must have a bad memory: "Certainly since I've been elected, Jamie Reed, myself and John Woodcock have all consistently shouted at the government that we need more investment in our infrastructure here."

  8. Man, 28, denies Whitehaven rape

    A 28-year-old man has been remanded on bail after pleading not guilty to the rape of a woman in Whitehaven on 23 December. 

    At Carlisle Crown Court, Turgay Denli, formerly from King Street, Workington, and now living in Enfield in London, also denied a charge of sexual assault alleged to have happened on the same day. 

    The case is expected to be heard in July. 

  9. Three banned from football grounds after match brawl

    Three men from Carlisle have been banned from all football grounds for three years for their part in a brawl with stewards at a match between Carlisle and Hartlepool.

    Magistrates heard that fans climbed on seats and railings after Carlisle scored late on in the game last October, with stewards trying to restore order. 

    The court heard that when one steward, who has since been sacked by Carlisle United, threw punches, some supporters retaliated. 

    Luke Hodgson, 18, from Upperby Road, Carl Swan, 24,from Sunnymeade, and Stephen Neaves, 25, from Crindledyke, were all given banning orders.

    A 56-year-old man escaped a ban but was fined a total of £376.

    • Temperatures at 3,000ft: 1C. 
    • Winds: Gale or severe gale force south to southwesterly, gusts 60-70mph. 
    • Cloud: Widespread cloud 2,000 ft at first, lifting to 2,600ft and becoming more broken. 
    • Visibility: Generally moderate or good, but very poor in hill fog. 
    • Freezing level: Just above the tops.

    The Lake District rangers who checked out the conditions today said the high winds and low clouds "made for challenging walking and difficult navigation, even on the paths".

    Dozens of school students in Cumbria have been given a realistic taste of what work in one of the emergency services involves.

    Various health services acted out a scenario at a careers fair to demonstrate how they deal with incidents like a car crash.

  15. Thieves steal Carlisle United's sports club defibrillator

    Thieves have stolen a defibrillator intended for the Neil Sports Centre at Carlisle United's ground.

    It was in a white Honda Civic taken from Castlerigg Drive in the city on Sunday morning.

    The vehicle was found in the Chances Park area later that day.

    Other items taken from the car include a child's car seat and a McClaren pushchair.

  18. Grasmere youngsters to bake off at top hotel for Valentines

    Youngsters at Grasmere primary school are preparing to provide afternoon tea on Valentine's Day at a Michelin-starred hotel.

    It's part of a project called Bright Stars, which aims to introduce primary school children to business.

    The pupils will have £50 to invest over eight weeks, and they're working with the chefs at the Forest Side hotel to provide cakes for the afternoon tea on 14 February at the hotel.

  19. Eden people asked: How can A66 be a road to prosperity?

    People along the Eden valley are being asked how best to take advantage of plans to improve the A66.

    Last year the government announced it wanted to bring the last remain stretches of single-carriageway on the stretch between Penrith and Scotch Corner up to the standards of the dual carriageway Temple Sowerby bypass.

    Kevin Beaty, the leader of Eden District council, says the better road will be an opportunity.

    "This is an opportunity for Penrith; there's a lot of development going on in the West coast of Cumbria. It would seem the opportunity is there so we're asking the people of Eden whether they want to take hold of that opportunity."

  20. Lakeland Trails adds in a shorter route for starters

    The Lakeland Trails series of running events, which attracted 12,500 athletes from all over the world last year, is adding a shorter 5k route to encourage people to get involved.
