Watch: In Derwentwater, for the first time, one of the UK's rarest fish caught on film
One of the UK's rarest fish, the vendace, which is found only in Derwentwater, has been filmed for the first time.
The fish, which has survived in the Lake District since the retreat of the glaciers after the Ice Age, was filmed by scientists studying the silts and sediment at the bottom of Derwentwater.
The project's run by the Environment Agency and the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. Dr Ian Winfield from CEH was operating the remotely-controlled submarine that filmed the fish.
He said: “Although, the vendace came and went within a matter of seconds, I knew it was a vendace. This was an amazing moment for a scientist, I was not expecting to see one, never mind film one. I knew I had captured for the first time on film the elusive vendace.”

Curle told BBC Radio Cumbria Sport he was aware that other clubs were also interested, but the Bradford offer had not reached the value Wyke had for Carlisle.
The manager said the striker had trained with the club and was available for the visit by Barnet in League Two tomorrow.
"I think Charlie will score goals in whatever division he plays, he won't score individual goals, he's a team player, 18, 19 games left in the season, if he scores 12 or 13 goals you're talking a 30 goal season, there's going to be interest", he said.

It is an offence to allow a dog to worry livestock and in some circumstances landowners can legally shoot dogs that are endangering their livestock.
Superintendent Gary Slater said: "A dog does not have to physically attack livestock to cause harm – even chasing them can cause distress and easily cause a pregnant sheep to miscarry lambs."
