MP's fury after she's told to leave Number 10 petition 'at the gate'

Workington Labour MP Sue Hayman says she's making an official complaint after she went to No 10 Downing Street to hand in a petition and was told she would have to leave it with security staff at the gate.
The petition, with 30,000 signatures, was against changes to health services in west Cumbria.

Sue Hayman told BBC Radio Cumbria she and a constituent from Copeland were stopped at the entrance: "We were told by police officers we would have to wait. A security officer came out and said we would not be allowed to go down to the door.
"I asked him why and he said 'today is not a good day'."
Ms Hayman said she was given no further explanation despite booking with the Prime Minister's office to deliver the petition.
We asked Downing Street for an explanation, and a spokesman referred us to the Metropolitan Police. The Metropolitan Police said it would not comment on security arrangements for Downing Street.
Homeless charity gets council backing for town centre 'community hub'

A "one stop shop" for vulnerable young adults will be created in Barrow, after planning approval was given for the conversion of a former furniture shop in the town centre.

Project John, which helps homeless people, needs a bigger headquarters and wants to create advice space and a café where the 16-to-25-year-olds it supports can learn workplace skills.
It has already raised nearly £1m to rebuild the former Youngs furniture store on Cavendish Street.
It'll be windy this evening and overnight with the rain extending eastwards and continuing through most of the night. Temperatures could drop later to 4C (39F).

Merseyside drug dealer jailed
A teenager sent to Kendal by a Merseyside drugs gang to sell heroin and crack cocaine has been jailed for six years.

Thomas Crehan, 19, from The Shires, St Helens, admitted conspiracy to supply Class A drugs in Kendal, and two similar offences in Merseyside and Cheshire at Liverpool Crown Court.
After sentencing, PC John Renshaw said officers had used evidence from Crehan's phone to establish he was making regular visits to Kendal. Crehan was arrested near Beast Banks possessing drugs with a street value of more than £500, and £640 in cash.
PC Renshaw said: “All too often people from the Merseyside area think that they can get away with coming to Cumbria to conduct criminal activity, but we will keep reinforcing the fact that they will not get away with it."

Proposals by the Success Regime, a management team brought in to reduce costs and increase efficiency, could result in consultant services being taken from the West Cumberland Hospital and centralised in Carlisle, 40 miles away.
Computer cold-callers take £400,000 in scams
Figures compiled by Action Fraud suggest more than £400,000 was lost by people in Cumbria between April and September last year to computer cold calling scams.
The total was taken in just 66 reported offences, mostly by callers pretending to be from computer companies and offering to fix problems.
Cumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall, said: "Many of those who suffer losses are elderly or vulnerable people who fall victim to so-called phishing scams in which they are persuaded to hand over passwords and bank account details."

Two men have been sentenced for their involvement in an attack that left their victim coughing blood in a Kendal street and needing surgery.

Jordan Jenkinson (pictured) 23, formerly of Romney Gardens in Kendal, and 24-year-old Christopher Procter, of Hayclose Road, admitted causing Callum Machon grievous bodily harm in the attack.
Jenkinson also admitted a number of seprate drugs and driving offences and was jailed for two years and four months. Procter was handed a two-year suspended sentence.
Ulverston locals given chance to discuss flood claims

People affected by unexpected flooding last August, which some blame on flood prevention work that was taking place at the time, will get a chance to question the Environment Agency about what happened this evening.
Torrential rain led to flooding in several areas of Cumbria, but the agency later published a statement explaining its work in Ulverston, claiming the flooding would have been worse without it.
The meeting takes place at Coronation Hall at 18:00.
The red Nissan Note was stolen after its keys were taken in a burglary early on Monday morning, police said.
Officers believe the incident may be linked to an incident on the same night at Landsdowne Court, less than a mile away, where a boy aged about 14 was seen trying to break into two houses.
How Cumbria's health plans fit into national picture
About a third of the proposals would mean a reduction in the number of hospitals offering emergency care. The ideas are designed to rethink how resources are used as patient demand increases.
Cloud will increase from the west with rain arriving through the afternoon, becoming heavy and persistent.

Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club's head coach John Pickthall believes the club will go on to win the North One West League after winning 20 matches out of 20 this season.
Pickthall said: "There's always a danger of dozing off but it's up to us as coaches and the senior members of the first team squad to keep us going. There's no place for complacency whatsoever."

Power firm stands by for Storm Doris day
Electricity North West says it's putting extra engineers on stand-by for Thursday, when the fourth named storm of the winter, Doris, is forecast to bring strong winds to the region.
Currently the strongest winds are expected over Lancashire, but the Met Office says the track may change. Snow is also forecast on high ground.

Cumbria's not alone in facing unpopular proposals to change health services: BBC research has found nearly two thirds of local plans to reshape NHS services in England involve hospital closures or moving treatment to a different site.
About a third of the proposals would mean a reduction in the number of hospitals offering emergency care. The ideas are designed to rethink how resources are used as patient demand increases.
Proposals include changes to maternity and emergency care in north and west Cumbria, with a separate plan covering South Cumbria.

Credit union seeks better future in merger
A Cumbrian credit union which faced an uncertain future soon after it started is hoping to resume services again by April.
The South Lakeland Credit Union had to deal with high set up costs and a lack of volunteers.
It's now merged with Edensave in Penrith to become the Eden and South Lakeland Credit Union.
