  3. Report released into the 2015 York floods

    A report is out from an independent inquiry into the 2015 York floods.

    Among the 85 recommendations, the Independent Flood Inquiry Report saysthe Environment Agency should endeavour to discuss decisions such as the opening of the Foss Barrier with multi-agency parners. 

    It's also to consider loud hailers and the installation of sirens along the urban stretch of the Foss catchment.

  4. Sports Direct 'modern slavery' brothers jailed

    Two Polish brothers have been jailed for treating people like slaves who they'd recruited to work for the vast Sports Direct warehouse in Shirebrook.

    Erwin and Krystian Markowski, both from Nottingham, were each jailed for six-year prisons for conspiring to arrange or facilitate travel with a view to exploitation, an offence under the Modern Slavery Act. 

    They were also handed a two-and-a-half year sentence for an offence of fraud by false representation, to run concurrently. 

    The pair recruited 18 vulnerable men in Poland, then controlled their bank accounts and kept most of their wages.

  5. £556m Northern Powerhouse cash allocation welcomed

    Business leaders and politicians have welcomed a newly-allocated cash injection of £556m for the government's Northern Powerhouse project.

    The money will fund flood defences in Yorkshire, a £10m innovation fund for businesses in Manchester and Cheshire, and regeneration in Hull city centre.

    It was announced by Prime Minister Theresa May amid plans for a new more interventionist industrial strategy.

    Mrs May said there was a need to "drive growth across the whole UK".

  6. Ex-university lecturer faces disciplinary tribunal over sex in office

    A former dental lecturer at Leeds University is facing a disciplinary tribunal for having noisy sex in his office. 

    A colleague of Dr Alec High lodged a complaint, because she was trying to comfort a grieving student at the time. 

    The General Dental Council heard that a woman was spotted entering and leaving Dr High's office for over two years and he'd been warned about his conduct by a senior colleague, but his behaviour continued.

    Mr High left the university in 2014.

  7. Gorden Kaye dies aged 75: 'There'll never be another Rene'

    Huddersfield-born actor Gorden Kaye has died at the age of 75 in a care home, his former agent has confirmed.

    He's best known for his character "Rene Artois" in 80s sitcom 'Allo 'Allo.

  8. Murder investigation after body found in Halifax

    A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a man in his 60s was discovered in Triangle near Halifax.

    Police were called to a house on Holly View in the village yesterday morning.

    A post mortem examination was carried out and the man's death is being treated as suspicious. 

    A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.

  10. Man jailed for sex offences against 14-year-old girl

    A 24-year-old man has been jailed for nearly four years after sexually abusing a girl he met in North Yorkshire via Facebook.

    David Stephen Tawse previously of The Avenue, Stokesley and York Road, Thirsk, had pleaded guilty to four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, one of making an indecent image and one of child abduction.  

    Unbeknown to the girl, he filmed them having sex and used the footage to threaten the girl into carrying on the relationship.  

    Det Con Neil Brodhurst said the case underlines why we should all be alert to the signs of sexual grooming:

  11. 'Allo 'Allo! star Gorden Kaye dies at 75

    More now on Huddersfield actor Gorden Kaye, who was best known for his role in the long-running BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!, who has died aged 75.

    The star's former agency confirmed to BBC News he died at a care home on Monday morning.

    Kaye played cafe owner Rene Artois on the hit show, which centred on the fictional exploits of resistance fighters in World War Two in German-occupied France.

    He appeared in all 84 episodes of the sitcom, as well as a stage version.

  13. Man, 50, injured during mugging in Dewsbury

    A man has been left with an injury to his face after being mugged in Dewsbury.

    The 50-year-old man was walking down Springfield Terrace last Thursday night when two men and a woman came up to him as he was going home with a takeaway.

    He wasgrabbed, forced to the ground and then assaulted by the men. They took his wallet and cash, leaving him with a facial injury. 

    They are described as being in their 20s and one was 5ft 1ins wearing a black quilted jacket and jeans the second 5ft 11ins, skinny, wearing dark clothing and the woman had a small build and dark hair. 

  14. Sam Bailey wants local act to open Sheffield Show

    Sam Bailey, winner of X Factor 2013, is turning her hand to talent spotting. 

    She's looking for new local artists to perform as her support act when she comes to Sheffield on tour in March.

  15. BreakingHuddersfield actor Gorden Kaye of Allo Allo has died

    Huddersfield actor Gorden Kaye who starred in Allo Allo has died, his former agency has confirmed. 

    He was 75.
