  1. We.are.out.of.here

Before we go, we hadn't forgotten that it's Throwback Thursday.

After all today's festival news (scroll down to see where Kasabian, Brian Wilson and PJ Harvey are headlining this summer) we thought we'd treat you to a highlight from last year's Reading and Leeds festival from post-punk revivalists Savages.

Warning: there are some flashing images in the video.

    Video content

Video caption: The post-punk foursome deliver a whirl of noise and fuzz.

That's it from us but we've left you news of Ed Sheeran's tour, Madonna's adoption denial and George Michael continuing to shift masses of units a month on from his death.

Also you'll find out which music dogs prefer.  And it isn't woof 'n' roll.

See you tomorrow for New Music Friday and 5 Things We've Learned This Week.

You'd be a fool to miss it.

  2. Kasabian to headline Reading and Leeds

    Kasabian

Leicester lads-come-dad rockers Kasabian have been announced to headline Reading and Leeds festivals this summer, alongside Muse.

Speaking to the NME, songwriter Sergio Pizzorno said: "It’s quite something - it’s defined us along the way, from back in ’04 when we played the tent.

Quote Message: When we played in 2012 it was such a special honour because it was the first time we’d headlined a major festival. It was phenomenal. With these new tunes, it’s going to be incredible.”

Two Door Cinema Club, Fatboy Slim, Flume, Jimmy Eat World, The Amity Affliction, Circa Waves and Rat Boy have also been added to the bill.

The festival have announced 19 major acts so far and some people on social media have picked up on the distinct lack of female acts...with deference to Chrissy Costanza from Against the Current.

To be fair to organisers, there are still loads of artists yet to be announced.

  3. Madness honour legendary Camden venue

    Suggs at the Dublin Castle
Image caption: The plaque hangs outside the pub, which has been a home for live music for five decades

In the spirit of independent venues week, pop-ska band Madness have unveiled a heritage plaque at the Dublin Castle, a pub and venue in Camden, north London where they made their name in the 1970s.

The Music Heritage Award is given to venues that played a crucial role in helping to create music history.

The Dublin Castle gave Madness a weekly residency in 1979.

"It meant everything to us," Suggs told the BBC. "We could barely play our instruments when we first arrived."

"But we started to notice that more people were coming week after week.

"Then, people started to dress a bit like us.

"Then, suddenly, there was a queue round the block - and that's when record companies started to notice."

And remember, if like Suggs and the gang you're a fan of grassroots venues you can tune into 6 Music this afternoon as Steve Lamacq and his team head to Chelmsford, Essex.

  4. Boy George discusses 'feud' with George Michael

Boy George has laughed off suggestions he had a 'feud' with George Michael during the 1980s about his not being out of the closet.

The stars both rose to fame during the early 80s and the Culture Club frontman admitted the pair were rivals but came to respect the Wham! singer's music.

He told presenter Andy Cohen that any feud was meaningless, saying: "we all bitched about each other, that's what we did in the 80s".

  5. 11 sports stars who attempted a career in music

On Monday we told you about Team GB Olympic long jumper Jazmin Sawyers being selected by will.i.am on The Voice after impressing with her mashup of Alessia Cara and Portishead.  Is there anything that girl can't do?

With that in mind, BBC Three has been looking at other sports stars who have tried to break into the music biz down the years, with varying degrees of success...to put it kindly.

From former Man Utd striker Andy Cole's "summertime rhyme and a party jam” to Olympic skiing champion Tina Maze (above) and tennis star Caroline Wozniacki going all Cher on us with the autotune - via Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Waddle/Glen Hoddle - here's eleven of the best.

  6. Dogs 'prefer reggae and soft rock'

    Dog beside gramophone

"Who let the dogs out.. woof woof woof."

If you were under the mistaken impression that the Baha Men were probably your pet mutt's favourite songs, then think again.

According to researchers at the University of Glasgow, dogs prefer reggae and soft rock over other genres of music.

The boffins played a variety of music to dogs at a rehoming centre in Dumbarton and assessed physiological and behavioural changes.

Although the most positive changes were seen when the dogs were played reggae and soft rock, they do say that each dog had its own music tastes.

Still, try this one below and get on your dog's good side today.

  10. Radiohead & Gaz Coombes show support for Independent Venue Week

If you've been reading our blog over the last few days you'll have gathered by now that it's Independent Venue Week this week.

To celebrate that fact, Steve Lamacq has been out on the road this week broadcasting from towns and cities around England.

As a result we've already heard from IVW ambassador Tim Burgess and London night Czar Amy Lamé on the importance of such venues.

Now, after a trip to Oxford, the 6 Music team spoke to local lad Colin Greenwood from Radiohead about how small venues like the Jericho Tavern in his hometown enabled the band to learn the craft of playing live:

Video caption: Colin explains how small venues enabled the band to learn the craft of playing live.

Fellow Oxfordian Gaz Coombes recalls the addictive feeling of playing the local scene with a fledgling Supergrass and sneaking into an Inspiral Carpets gig while still underage.

We've all done it, but that doesn't mean that you should. Get down in the moshpit for sure but do please be accompanied by an adult at all points.

  11. Has La La Land been overhyped?

    La La Land

Unless you've been walking around with your eyes shut and with cotton wool buds in your ears then you've probably seen/heard at least three fawning reviews of La La Land.

The Hollywood musical starring a sing-talking Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling scored a record-equalling 14 Oscar nominations on Tuesday including best song and score and looks set to be the movie to beat this year.

It seems our intrepid reporter Steven McIntosh however has not been quite as blinded by the story of the City of Stars.

But then he is a notoriously hard man to please.

    See if you agree.
