LIVE: Adele trumps Beyonce to win five Grammy Awards

What's the girl equivalent of bromance?

We're not sure but whatever it is Adele and Beyonce have it.

Adele became the first person ever to win the Grammys double treble; that is scooping the song, record and album of the year hat-trick twice...but instead of basking in the glory the tearful London threw the spotlight straight back on "the artist of my life."

Some are suggesting that this was the moment that Adele 'Kanyed' herself, referring to Mr West storming the stage two years ago after Beyonce was beaten to the best album title by Beck's Morning Phase.

Adele says she "cannot accept" her Grammy award for best album, saying Beyonce deserved it more.

If she means it, Adele would become only the second artist in history to turn down a Grammy (after Sinead O'Connor in 1990).

It is unclear as the ceremony ends how the issue will be resolved.

Adele had not long been sat down, but was called back up to pick up the Album of the Year award which she says she "cannot accept"...as it should go to Beyonce for her "inspiring" LP Lemonade.

Adele said: "I can't possibly accept this award

"My artist of my life is Beyonce and this album for me, this Lemonade album, was so monumental and so well thought out and so beautiful and soul baring ... and all us artists here [bleep] adore you

"You are our light. The way you make me and my friends feel. The way you make my black friends feel is empowering. You make them stand up for themselves.

"And I love you. I always have and I always will."

Adele takes her fourth award of the night for Hello, beating amongst others Beyonce's Formation.

Rihanna proves once again that she knows how to party better than the rest of us mortals.

She's brought a diamante-studded hip flask to help her get through the Grammys.

Earlier tonight, Chance the Rapper became the first black hip-hop artist to win the best new artist Grammy since Lauryn Hill in 1999.

He also set a world record: As his latest release, Coloring Book, is the first ever streaming-only album to win a Grammy (for best rap record).

He's just treated the crowd to soulful performance of that album's highlights, backed by a whole gospel choir.

With Kanye nowhere to be seen, is Chance now top of the hip-hop crop?

David Bowie has won all five prizes he was nominated for tonight, including best rock song for Blackstar.

Previously, the star had only won one competitive Grammy - best music video in 1985 for Jazzin' For Blue Jean - and a lifetime achievement award in 2006.

Backstage, recording engineer Kevin Killen, who worked with Bowie on Blackstar expressed his surprise at the statistic.

"It's kind of startling it's taken that long for an artist who's been so magnificent throughout his whole career." 

Musician Donny McCaslin, who played on the album, added it was "unfortunate" that Bowie had not been nominated for the main prize: Album of the year.

"Speaking artistically it was clear he should have been nominated in one if not more of the major categories," he said.

Think award shows are glamorous? Think again. Not only do you have to sit through four hours of people thanking their managers for taking 20% of their earnings, but you have to do it in the most uncomfortable chairs imaginable.

Grammy host James Corden just pointed out that Beyonce et al are perched on folding plastic chairs. The sort you store in your garage for parties.

"Wrestlers get hit with better chairs than this".

Prince's closing performance at the 1985 Grammys is one of the all-time greats: conducting his band through a stage invasion, then walking down the central aisle as the credits rolled.

So Bruno Mars had big shoes to fill (not literally, Prince was an eeny-weenie musical genius) as he paid tribute to the star tonight.

But, to his credit, Bruno did brilliantly. Strapping on Prince's trademark cloud guitar and a purple sequinned suit, the singer raced through a note-perfect rendition of Let's Go Crazy - even replicating the star's legendary guitar solo.

Before him, Prince proteges The Time brought the funk back into the Staples Centre, racing through a number of their Prince-penned hits, including the mighty Jungle Love.

It was a fitting tribute to a star we lost too soon.

And Beyonce and Jay Z are digging it.

As were we, good job Bruno.

"I just want to thank President agent orange for perpetuating evil," shouts Busta Rhymes as he takes to the stage with A Tribe Called Quest and Anderson Paak.

He then calls out Donald Trump for what he calls an "unsuccessful Muslim ban", before launching into the song We The People, which attacks xenophobia and religious persecution in the United States.

The performance ended with rapper Q-Tip shouting "resist, resist, resist".

It's the most incendiary moment of the night so far.

Adele wins one of the "big three" prizes of the night: Best song.

"First of all, I really do apologise for swearing," she said, referring to her faux pas during the George Michael tribute earlier. "It's George Michael - he means a lot to me. 

"I really do apologise if I offended anyone."

She went on to thank her co-writer Greg Kurstin, who went beyond the call of duty while working on Adele's album, 25.

"Greg kept coming to England to work with me so I didn't have to leave my son - even though he had a son and daughter of his own. 

"Thank you for your patience with me, and thank you for creating my favourite song that I've ever done."

We've just had the night's second tribute performance, but this time in honour of a man who is very much still with us...in fact he's in the crowd, singing along.

Barry Gibb gave a medley of Bee Gees hits his seal of approval, joining in with the words to Staying Alive, Tragedy and Night Fever- courtesy of tribute specialist Demi Lovato (she did a mean Lionel Ritchie last year), former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello, Tori Kelly,Little Big Town and a few others.

The tribute is based on the flimsy excuse that Saturday Night Fever turns 40 this year.  

But why are you still sat down Barry?  You should be dancing...yeah.

Country star Sturgill Simpson, who's just left the Grammy stage, could be the person to ruin Beyonce's night.

He's considered the dark horse for the best album prize, with his rootsy alt-country album A Sailor's Guide To Earth.

But he's not the sort of person who gets competitive. Asked about the nomination last year, here's what he told the New York Times.

"I loved [Beyonce's] Lemonade. I thought it was genius. I love the Adele record. I would’ve liked to see Frank Ocean’s name where mine is. But that’s not my place to say. I totally understand [his protest]. I just thought that record [‘Blonde’] was really groundbreaking. 

"I listen to just about everything except country music, so it’s strange."

Going into the Grammys we'd assumed that, like the Golden Globes a couple of weeks ago, there'd be a lot of political posturing from the stage. 

But so far, it's only really James Corden who's referenced the political upheaval in the US. 

During his opening number, the chat show star rapped: "Live it all up, because this is the best / With President Trump, we don't know what comes next."

Later, as a series of unflattering tweets scrolled across the bottom of the screen, he joked: "Any critical tweets you see are fake tweets".

The only other person to speak out from the stage was Paris Jackson, who took the chance to ask people to protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

“We could really use this kind of excitement at a pipeline protest guys!" she said.

Lady Gaga takes to the stage with Metallica, performing Moth To A Flame - in one of the most gif-able performances of the night. 

Poor old James Hetfield doesn't seem to have his microphone turned up, though. He doesn't realise until the second verse, when he has to share Gaga's mic.

Anyone doubting Gaga's credentials should know she used to be the singer in a Led Zeppelin cover band.

Great night for Chance...he was lost for words initially after beating De La Soul, Drake and Kanye West to the best rap album.

Before declaring: "It's another one baaaaaaby!"

It's the first time a streaming-only album has ever won a Grammy.  

That's three awards now for him after best new act and best rap performance.
