Meet Devon's newest inhabitants.

Six wolves have just arrived from Sweden to a wolf enclosure at Wildwood in Escott.

It's one of the steps on the road to re-introducing wolves to the wild in the UK - most likely in the Scottish highlands.

Researchers from Sweden will be monitoring them for at least a year.

Efforts to conserve the remaining fragments of the great forest of Caledon in Scotland may be doomed to fail unless a new strategy is rapidly adopted, new research by Exeter University suggests.

These forest fragments are characterised by the dominance of Scots pine and are a unique feature of the Scottish Highlands.

They are categorised as a Priority Habitat under the EU Habitats and Species Directive with 10 of the remaining areas designated Special Areas of Conservation by Scottish Natural Heritage.

However, a team found that the present climate is more suitable for oak trees than the Scots pine.

The research team included colleagues from the universities of Durham, Exeter, York and Lund in Sweden, with the findings published in the journal Conservation Letters.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust is meeting the highest number of standards in the region according to a review looking at how emergency general surgery (EGS) is provided at hospitals in the South West.

The review, commissioned by the NHS South West Clinical Senate, looked at the 14 NHS Trusts within the South West Peninsula and measured them against 22 specific standards relating to EGS. It found that Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust met 19 of these.

Dr Phil Hughes, Medical Director of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "I would firstly like to take this opportunity to applaud the efforts of our staff, who work incredibly hard to ensure our patients are cared for, seen and treated as quickly as possible, whether this is for surgery, an investigative and/or diagnostics procedure."

A drug dog on patrol in Devon led police officers to the home of a man with a carrier bag of cannabis.

A police dog has tracked down a man suspected of pushing over a 80-year-old woman as he ran from a shop in Exeter.

Police were called to the Tesco Metro store on the high street on Wednesday afternoon. 

The woman was taken to hospital with a broken leg. 

Jakob Kolter, 22, from Exeter, has been charged with theft from a shop and grievous bodily harm.

A heart-breaking plea has gone out on social media to try to find a new home for a dog at an adoption centre in Newquay.

Now St Mewan Primary School near St Austell is getting lottery funding to pay for a campaign to encourage more families to use the bus or walk or cycle to school.

Head teacher Elaine Badger said: "People have very busy lives so lots of people drop their children off by car because they don't see any alternatives so we do get gridlock and a backlog of traffic goes out into the main road so there could be a major accident."

Health chiefs have defended a decision to close community hospital beds in Devon.

Beds at Holsworthy, Honiton, Okehampton, Seaton and Whipton in Exeter are to close. 

Rob Sainsbury, chief operating officer of the NEW Devon Clinical Commissioning Group, said: "We know that 40% of our hospitals have patients who do not need to be there.

"So we can't allow that to continue and that is exactly why we have to shift the balance from the hospital to the home."

The whale which has been feeding off Start Bay for several days was spotted by nature watcher @seaskywatch off the Skerries Buoy in the bay at 15:00.   

Large crowds gathered last weekend after the whale came close to shore.

A 14-year-old girl reported missing from the Ivybridge area has been found safe and well.

Officers have been searching for Abigail Moseley who was last seen at her home around 22:45 last night.

Abigail made contact with family members just after 14:00 today and has been found safe and well in Plympton.

In a survey of nearly 400 women with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), half also said accessing care was difficult.

The illness is so bad for some that 1,000 wanted pregnancies are terminated each year, the Midirs journal reported.

But better treatment for the condition - which the Duchess of Cambridge had - was reported in specialist units.

The charity Pregnancy Sickness Support, which carried out the research with Plymouth University, said women were often misled about the risks of taking certain drugs to treat HG, which were actually safe.
