A elderly dog has had half-a-kilo of matted fur removed after being found near a school playground in Cornwall, the RSPCA says.

The masses of tangled fur left the West Highland terrier unable to move properly, and it was so overgrown it was initially impossible to tell if he was male or female, the charity said.

The dog, now named Freddie by his rescuers, was occasionally called "Fred the Dred" because of the dreadlock-like appearance of his fur after he was found near Treloweth Primary School in Redruth last week. Staff said his fur was "so bad that the only option we had was to shave it all off".

He was receiving treatment at a shelter in Exeter and an investigation was being carried out to try and find out how he became a victim of such "severe neglect", the charity said.

The BBC's Inside Out programme visited 50 Tesco stores across the country and was charged more at the till than the price on the shelf in 33 of them.

In Callington in Cornwall, store staff put the blame on seasonal workers for out-of-date offer being left on the shelves.

One staff member said: "We try not to let it happen but at times like Christmas and the summer we unfortunately take on a lot more staff and because this is an out-of-date label it should have been taken off by one of us".

Tesco said it was double checking the accuracy of the price labels at all its stores as a result of the investigation. It runs more than 3,500 stores across the UK.

The Home Office said its actions included legislation to allow police to shut down phone lines used to sell drugs.

  19. Major pub blaze: Firefighters give thatch safety advice

    Andrew Segal

    Local Live

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has reminded people of its safety advice for thatch properties after a fire broke out in the roof of a pub in Devon.

About 80 firefighters have been tackling the blaze at the Bell Inn near Bideford after being called out this morning. They have also had to deal with asbestos in the building.

The service said that "although thatch fires are not common, over 90% of thatch roof fires start as a result of a faulty flue or chimney".

It added: "The thatch is designed to repel water which makes extinguishing such fires difficult."

Its tips include making sure chimneys are well maintained, insulated and swept regularly.
