  5. Indecent images paediatrician: 'Every picture a crime scene'

    Andrew Segal

    Local Live

A paediatrician who admitted 17 charges over indecent images of children showed "no regard for the effects [of the images] on vulnerable young children", a charity says.

    Jonathan Walsh

Jonathan Walsh (pictured), 47, who used to live in Barnstaple and now lives in Lancashire, admitted making and distributing indecent images during a hearing at Exeter Crown Court. He was sacked from North Devon District Hospital when charged, and will be sentenced at a later date.

The NSPCC said: "Although it has been acknowledged that none of the images related to patients at this hospital, Walsh was working in a position of significant responsibility when he chose to commit these crimes."

It added: "Every image is a crime scene and every child will need support to recover."

  6. Government 'encouraged Truro EU Capital of Culture bid'

    BBC Radio Cornwall

There was "no doubt" discussions to approve a £500,000 bid for Cornwall to seek EU Capital of Culture status may have been rushed, a Cornwall Councillor has admitted, but he said the government "encouraged" it.

The council's scrutiny committee voted 5-4 in favour to send the £500,000 bid for the title in 2023 back to the Cabinet for "reconsideration".

Supporters think a successful bid would bring huge economic advantages. But critics argued that if the first stage of the application failed, hundreds of thousands of pounds of tax payers' money would have been wasted.

St Ives Councillor Andrew Mitchell said: "That was the timetable the government gave us. They announced that we would go for the bid, even though we at County Hall believed after the [European Union] referendum vote, we weren't going to proceed with it."

    Andrew Segal

    Local Live

A case which has seen a paediatrician who worked in Devon plead guilty to 17 charges over indecent images of children has demonstrated "how effectively all agencies and professionals can work together", police say.

Forty-seven-year-old Jonathan Walsh (pictured), who used to live in Barnstaple and now lives in Lancashire, admitted making and distributing indecent images during a hearing at Exeter Crown Court.

    Jonathan Walsh

He was sacked from North Devon District Hospital when charged, and will be sentenced at a later date.

Police said that they, the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Devon County Council "worked closely ... throughout this case".

Det Insp Andrea Kingdon, of the Devon and Cornwall Police Child Exploitation Unit, said the case also showed how agencies worked to "identify those perpetrating these types of crimes, no matter what their standing in the community".

  15. South Devon bus cuts: Analysis

    John Ayres

    BBC Spotlight

Concessionary fares may be part of the reason a bus company is stopping routes in south Devon.

Local Link, which is one of the operators in the Torbay area, said it was cutting 10 services because of increasing overheads and reduced income.

    Local Link bus

Stagecoach is the main bus operator in Torbay, but Local Link picks up some of those more awkward routes down tight, hilly residential streets. By they very nature, this makes the buses highly-valued by their users.

But Local Link feel that the money they're receiving isn't enough to cover the people using their services, and a key part of the decision appears to be pensioners' bus passes.

Torbay has a high proportion of senior citizens, so there is a great number of concessionary fares. These are a fraction of full fares. So, even though many people might be using the buses, Local Link are saying it's not enough to make it work for them.

Torbay Council said it's trying to find an alternative operator to run the routes.

    Andrew Segal

    Local Live

A Devon hospital is shocked by a paediatrician admitting 17 charges relating to indecent images of children, health bosses say.

Forty-seven-year-old Jonathan Walsh (pictured), who used to live in Barnstaple and now lives in Lancashire, admitted charges of making and distributing indecent images during a hearing at Exeter Crown Court.

    Jonathan Walsh

The doctor, who previously worked at North Devon District Hospital, was sacked when he was charged. None of the images related to children in his care. He is due to be sentenced at a later date.

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust Medical Director George Thomson, said "immediate action" was taken to exclude Walsh from the trust after a police investigation began in September 2015, and it also informed the General Medical Council.

"This news has deeply shaken our whole team ... and we know it will also come as a shock to the community," he said.

He added that a support helpline had been set up "for anyone worried about this news and how it may have affected them". The number is 0300 123 1744.
