A Council tenant has been ordered to pay £5,872 to Cornwall Council after letting out his property on the website AirBnB.

Peter John Wootton, 46, from Coastguard Flats, West Looe, was charged at Bodmin Magistrates Court on Wednesday 22 February.

The council's corporate fraud investigations team received an anonymous tip off that Mr Wootton was advertising his property on the website, which under the terms of his tenancy, he did not have permission to do.

Pete Jarman, landlord services director for Cornwall Housing Ltd, said: "It is important that such a scarce resource as social housing goes to individuals and families who are in genuine housing need."

A man had his mobile phone and bank card stolen and was left with a broken jaw following an attack in Plymouth, police have said.

The man, who is in his 20s, approached two men who were arguing on Union Street, and told the pair to calm down.

Police said, one of the men then punched the victim in the face causing him to fall to the ground before returning to his feet. The victim believed he was then hit again and had his mobile phone and bank card taken, officers said.

The victim was taken to Derriford Hospital with a broken jaw following the attack at 01:10 on Thursday 2 February.

Police want to speak to a taxi driver who took the man to hospital between 01:00 and 02:00.

One ward has been closed at St Austell Community Hospital following a flu outbreak.

Visitors are being asked not to visit family and friends in Heligan ward, where patients are suffering from Influenza type A.

The Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust which runs the hospital says it hopes to be able to reopen the ward over the weekend or early next week.

A man who falsely claimed to have served in the SAS has been jailed for seriously injuring a two-year-old girl .

Andrew Brooks, 35, of New Mill, Penzance admitted wounding and was jailed for three years at Exeter Crown Court.

The toddler was left with a fractured skull and brain damage after Brooks had been looking after her in 2006.

He escaped justice for more than a decade but was caught after an ex-girlfriend contacted the police when Brooks told her he had injured the child by pushing her against a table.

He also told a series of ex-girlfriends about his SAS background, but the court heard he had in fact been kicked out of the army after six weeks basic training.

They are the Community Speedwatch volunteers from Cornwall and they were presented with a special Volunteer Team of the Year Award for 2016 by Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer.

Representatives of the teams in Antony, Sheviock, Deviock, Maker, Rame and Millbrook parishes and Saltash town received the certificate at police HQ in Exeter.

In one operation the teams worked jointly on the A374 and A38 during which 1,488 vehicles were monitored, 23 of which were exceeding the limit. The drivers of those vehicles all received warning letters.

A chain on a ferry between Devon and Cornwall will get an independent inspection to find out why it failed.

The chain on the Torpoint ferry in Plymouth was found to have a broken link for the third time in the last year said the ferry firm.

Two large chains, linked to an engine on board the ferry, are used to pull the vessel across the River Tamar.

The entire faulty chain is being replaced today, six months earlier than scheduled, at a cost of £100,000.

General manager David List said the firm needed a "clear indication of the cause" of the failure of the chain that stretches 700m across the river.

It's the first time a chain has had to be replaced earlier than the normal three-year scheduled replacements.

A girl who left a tiny Dartmoor village on the outskirts of Plymouth and went to war but never returned has had her name added to a war memorial on the 100th anniversary of her death.

A teenager from St Ives with mental health problems may have to be treated as far away as Scotland or Ireland after medical staff in Cornwall were unable to find her a suitable bed in England. 

It comes weeks after the  prime minister pledged to stop young people being sent out of their local area for treatment by 2021.

Sasha is currently being treated in Somerset meaning a 300-mile round trip for her mother Mariem, but she says she may have to travel even further in the future.

The BBC contacted the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Cornwall who said it was unable to comment on this occasion.

Keith Bowden, 53, from Falmouth, is wanted for recall to prison.

He's believed to be in west or mid Cornwall and is not considered a direct threat to the public.

He is described as white, 5ft 6in tall, of medium build and may or not be clean shaven as he has had a beard in the past.

British Basketball returns to BBC Sport this evening for the second leg of the BBL Trophy semi-final as Worcester Wolves host Plymouth Raiders.

In the first leg, Plymouth beat Worcester 96-78 but can Worcester bring it back on their home turf? Worcester need to win the leg by 19 points to advance to face either Leicester Riders and Cheshire Phoenix in the final on 19 March in Glasgow.

Three residents of a hostel have pleaded not guilty to the  murder of a 31-year-old in St Austell  who was discovered unconscious by a dog walker in a park last month.

Proposals for a new rail depot at Exeter have been sent to city planners.

It's to cope with new electric trains in the London and Thames Valley area, and new Intercity Express Trains across the Great Western Railway network.

GWR's regional development manager Dan Okey said the new depot would bring "more carriages, and more frequent services to the area".

A man has denied murdering his 18-month-old adoptive daughter.

Matthew Scully Hicks, 31, entered a not guilty plea to the charge at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday.

Mr Hicks, whose address was given in court papers as being from Cornwall, is accused of killing Elsie Scully Hicks on 29 May, 2016.

A trial has been fixed for 12 June and it is expected to last four weeks. Mr Hicks was released on bail.

A well-known local sportsman has been sent to prison for his part in a pub brawl .

Amazing pictures have emerged of what is thought to be a humpback whale diving off south Devon.

The whale has been spotted at a number of places including Slapton and Blackpool Sands, tracking up and down apparently hunting for food.
