A burglar with a long criminal record, who broke into the Cumberland Infirmary and caused damage costing £6,800 to repair, has been told to have alcohol treatment for a year.

Carlisle Crown Court was told Nicholas Allan, 44, stole nothing, although he ransacked offices and broke doors in two separate buildings.

Allan, from Millholme Avenue in Carlisle, admitted burglary with intent, possessing cannabis and a bail offence.

  4. Low wages 'leave older west Cumbrians in debt'

Low wages and the "Bank of Mum and Dad" are among the reasons why older people in Cumbria are in debt, according to the charity Age UK.

Figures published by the financial services company, Prudential, suggest that a quarter of those who will retire this year, will owe, on average, almost £25,000.

It says that nearly two fifths have a mortgage sometimes from remortgaging to release money for their children. More than half owe money on credit cards.

One task includes installing special telephones enabling vulnerable people to call for help; another is helping officers prepare for meetings with other agencies; and a third is promoting "key messages" to reduce sexual violence by, for example, making presentations to the public.

Det Chief Insp Dan St Quintin, said: "By taking on a few volunteers to do some small but very important supporting roles, I can ensure that that my detectives are spending as much time as possible catching child abusers, domestic abuse perpetrators and other criminals doing really nasty things."
