Officers from North Yorkshire Police have been on patrol on Fulford Road in York, looking for drivers using their mobiles when driving.

Today the law changed, the number of points you can get has doubled from three to six and the fine has increased from £100 to £200.

A man from Bradford who murdered a Glasgow shopkeeper in a religiously-motivated attack is being hailed a hero in parts of Pakistan. 

Tanveer Ahmed stabbed Asad Shah claiming he'd "disrespected" Islam. Now Ahmed who's serving a life sentence has gathered a growing fan base for the act, with some people in Pakistan believing those who commit blasphemy deserve to die.

That's what researchers at The University of Sheffield are trying to find out.

A new £1.9m project will investigate ways of improving the oral health of young people living in deprived areas.

Researchers will work with 48 schools and nearly 6000 young people in England, Scotland and Wales on the four-year Brushing Reminder 4 Good Oral Health (BRIGHT) initiative.

In each school, one class will receive a lesson about dental health and a series of text messages, while another will not. 

The team will collect information on tooth decay, frequency of brushing, and the impact decay has on the children’s lives to determine whether those in the programme develop better oral health habits than those who don’t participate.

A sadist who "took pleasure" in torturing young children and subjecting them to horrendous physical, sexual and mental abuse has been given a life sentence .

A man in his 60's has died after being hit by a lorry near Wyke today . 

Police were called to the incident in Whitehall Road at about 11:00.

The male, believed to be in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Three water filter plants, one of which was sponsored by a Bradford company, have opened in Pakistan . The plants are located in the Badshai Mosque, one in a church and one in the journalist colony for Christians and Muslims.

A church that has made its home in a former Spar supermarket in Sheffield will be staying put after winning the right to buy the freehold. 

The Meadowhead Christian Fellowship has its origins in the 1980s and has "a vision to see local people won for Christ". When US evangelist, Billy Graham, visited Yorkshire in 1985, the church organised buses to take local people to his meetings.

The church has been based in the former supermarket in the 1960s-build Jordanthorpe Centre, Dyche Lane, since 2004. It has a 99-year lease over the ex-shop and mounted a unique legal bid to buy the freehold from the pension fund that owns it. 

Now the church has been handed victory by a specialist tribunal and will have to pay just £6,838 for the freehold.  

Being a bobby on the beat on horseback comes with a whole lot of challenges...

But spare a thought for the person that has to clean this lot at West Yorkshire Police!

The first Selby Arts Festival takes place in July this year - and organisers have just announced the headline acts.

The opening event of the Festival will see BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winner and Mercury Prize nominated Seth Lakeman play a special concert with his band at Selby Abbey.

A 34-year-old Sheffield woman who bit her partner's ear off and threatened police with a knife , following a birthday binge of booze and crack cocaine, has been jailed. 

Sheffield Crown Court heard how on Cheryl Casson's 34th birthday on December 29 last year, police were called to her property in Spofforth Road, Darnall to reports of a disturbance.

A woman from Bradford who has been missing for nearly a week, could be in in Lancashire, say police.

Emma Richards, 30, was reported missing on Thursday. She is believed to have links with the Blackpool area and may be with David Counsell, who is also from Bradford.

She is described as about 5ft tall with shoulder length red or purple hair.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Schoolchildren from Flamborough Primary school will be helping to bring the Yorkshire coast to the heart of London.

They've been helping Welcome to Yorkshire collect nearly two tonnes of unique pebbles for their entry into the Chelsea Flower Show.

The chalk pebbles are distinct as many have neat, cylindrical holes in them made by piddocks. The small mussel like sea creatures live on the lower shore and burrow into soft rocks, like chalk. 

If you think its tough collecting them...spare a thought for the people putting them back after the show!

All the pebbles will be returned to the same site in Flamborough once the show is over!

If you've been at Meadowhall shopping centre in South Yorkshire today, you may have had to do a double take.

A huge elephant was roaming around the shops.

It's one of the more unusual thefts I've seen - a 12-yard skip has been stolen from a Sheffield recycling company.

CCTV has captured the skip being loaded onto a white transit lorry with a blue lifting hook at Sheffield Cold Stores on Roman Ridge Road at about 13:40 on Sunday.

DJB Recycling is offering a reward for any information leading to the recovery of the blue, open-top skip.
